Why don't women get it?

I think that most women arent audiophiles the same reason most men arent it doesnt interest them. It may seem that there are lots of people here and most of us are men but there is still a percentage of wome who are as into this hobby as we are.

For example I am a man I have absolutley zero percent interest in sports does that make me less of a man? No I dont think so it only makes me a man that has other interests. I dont get the fascination with pro teams as far as im concerned they could all go away tommorow and I wouldndt miss it.

I am not interested in guns or hunting or fishing. I am not interested in making cars go fast or having a truck with big tires in fact racing is in my oppinon one of the dumbest most boring things I have ever witnessed in my life, In fact I would rather watch the laundry tumble in a washer in a commercial laundry mat, it would have more entertainment value.

I dont drink beer in fact I dont drink at all another manly thing I have no interest in :D

Most women are interested in things that are important to them the same way we as men have our primary interests. Women tend to be more artistic and like things that are decorative rather than mechanical in nature.

Every woman wants to be beautiful and most will spend thousands of hours and dollars to look their best. It has very little to do with them wanting to attract or impress men they do it to impress other women.

We do the same we tend to build fast cars and play sports etc to impress other men.

My wife gets it. She has her own system that kicks ass (well I set it up for her) but she plays it everyday and often sits in for a couple songs on the Electrostatics. She knows what sounds good and understands what I do and why I like audio.

BTW 2 of my early mentor's were woman and one still runs the highest end store I know. I see her all the time and rarely make an upgrade, purchase or trade without running it by her. 25 years after I first met her she still gives me clarity and knows more than anyone I know.

What are your hobbies? :D

My interest in modified cars is the same to me as art is to an artist. It's personal expression and self rewarding. Your statement makes lots of people look shallow IMO. The audio thing doesn't impress anyone I know either. As a matter of fact, most think it's stupid when you can go out and buy a Bose system...lol. I don't know about you, but if I was trying to impress anyone, it wouldn't be MEN!

They get it when I throw some Tony Bennett on and open a bottle of wine.:smoke:

And they said you didn't have a heart.:D (You DID say that)

I don't know of anyone who enjoys music more than the women in my family. My mom was a pianist and singer, my sisters both sing, and love to listen to all sorts of music.

My wife adores music, For her, music is uncluttered by trappings and specifications.

Thats it.

Well you may not realize this but who is the overwhelming majority of people who go to watch drag races or any type of racing in general? It's not women so that leaves men which means that MOST perhaps not you but most men doing something that impresses other like minded men whether it is their goal or not.

If thats shallow oh well so be it. Audiophiles are no different we all enjoy music and the systems that bring us that enjoyment. I am impressed when I see a tube amp that has 20 tubes and huge transformers etc now is that person trying to impress other audiophiles when he proudly displays such an item? perhaps only a subconsious level but still Yes most likely so, and there is nothing wrong with that it makes beautiful music and he/she has most likely worked very hard to own such an item and should be proud of it. Am I envious when I see such an item ? usally not no I only wish someday I will get to have the enjoyment of listening to it at at will.

I am not saying that impressing anyone man or woman is the primary reason for doing something whether it be building race cars, tattoo work, or playing pro football. but it certainly is nice to get the accolades and praise for doing something you enjoy doing.

My wife loves our stereo. She can hear it better too. If I'm having a distortion, or problem with the sound, she hears it before I do.

I think other posters have come close...it seems it's more about the music than the gear with women. My wife sings, loves great female vocals & loves to hear them reproduced well. She doesn't really care how to get there...just how it sounds. When we first met, she thought my tube Fisher/Altec Model Nine setup was just the berries, and can't wait for the Fisher to be running again. I once mentioned I was going to sell an Altec speaker, and she nearly stroked. "NOT THE ALTECS!!!" All was well when I told her it was a 15" Altec PA driver & not the Model Nines. She would probably draw the line at VOTTs, though.

My girlfriend gets it and had a pretty decent system even before I met her, but she doesn't feel the need to upgrade.

It's probably related to the same reason that men typically aren't as faithful as women...the same genes that make us look at every attractive woman that walks by are also probably working on our satisfaction with our stereo. "It sounds great, but what could I be missing?"

Faithfulness has nothing to do with it. Biologically speaking men may SEEM to cheat more as in the same time period a woman carries and brings a child to term a man can father many children in that time. In fact, this is what creates genetic diversity and genetic drift, over time. Women cheat too, a lot in fact, in order to find the best suitor to father her child and thus care for it (in theory). I look at attractive women too but that is not my desire to cheat, only biology working to ensure our species never goes extinct. This is also why sex feels so good.

In terms of the biology of women and men differing and thus why men prefer audio more than women: women are known to have attenuated hearing that is higher in the frequencies than men. FACT. What a man finds bright a woman will most likely find overly so. This is a generalization but men are moreso the toolpushers, fixers, handy types, mechanics, plumbers, electricians.... men and "things" go together. Men are much more attenuated to items, mechanics and equipment than women. Women think with predominately one half of the brain and men the other (I cannot recall which side to which sex but women think with the emotional half and men with the technical half) so it stands to reason each sex sees the world different. This is also a biological trait in that it helps with diversity: seeing things differently helps in diversity and thus evolution. Women are much more emotional whereas men are not. In terms of audio it makes perfect sense to me why men are predominantly into audio and women are not. This is not an absolute rule but one you can be pretty sure of.

Sad, as there is an untapped market there to expand our numbers, but I do not see that happening any time soon.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me there are very few women that get into our hobby. In fact I think most women couldn't care less about audio.Like my wife, I could put on some fantastic recording and she'll say it sounds "nice".I thought guys were the ones who were visually oreintated.:dunno:

ahem...ahem.....:music:

Took you long enough. :D

yeah I've been remiss and haven't been around here for a few days.

I will say in all fairnesss though, that I am more into the end result of the sound. I'm not really into the restoration process, it's the beauty of the music that matters to me. If you'd like to use my girly example as subject matter:D

I do though have more than a healthy interest in all things analog and beautifully restored vintage systems, I just have no interest in doing the actual restorations myself.

My wife would rather watch some mindless crap on T.V. than possibily use parts of her brain to sit back and listen to the images of a good music passage. She unwinds by watching crap where I feel better if I experience some interesting music well reproduced.I think that it is not a lack of appreciation, but rather a preference for a mindless state.I'm glad that I have a nice furnished basement...

It's nicer down there, isn't it? I'm in the same boat. Mine bumps the national watch average up by a measure of 10. Never has shared any listening time, nor has the desire to try. A sad, immeasurable loss on her part. Sorry.

NONE of the women I know care about "good stuff". Not my mom, sister, realitives or even my best friend Laurie--whom has become "one of our family" to us at my house. ALL of them would be more than satisfied by Bose. In fact--most of them think those BPC or SPC "rack stereos" are the way to go. Most of them think our "good stuff" is just "old junk".

But to be fair--most of the GUYS I know feel the same way. Only ONE knows what a good stereo is--and has some Marantz unit--I THINK one of the scope units.

I think we are in about 5% of the population...as to knowing what good stereos are. Otherwise--Radio shack would have NEVER "gone soft and stylish" like they did.

My wife is an exception! She's a keeper. She loves old electronic test gear, vintage audio (bigger the better, especially loves tube audio and cornerhorns) and loves broadcast and recording gear and knows gear restoration and repair. She's an equally accomplished broadcaster and engineer in radio and TV. And never met a vintage TV she didn't love. Anyone who loves JBL Paragons and McIntosh tube gear in the living room is a keeper (bonus points being an equally accomplished parent and wheelchair athlete. We both have spina bifida and so do our two adopted sons)

Aside from the fact that most women don't like to tinker with gear,I have noticed that most of the women that I know can't have a radio on while using a computer or a radio on in the back ground while the TV is on.Perhaps complex music is a form of auditory multi-tasking that many women don't like due to brain hard wiring.Any neuropsychologists?
