we are all flippers, remember the piece you sold because you wanted to upgrade? Flipper! you know you are. Ever notice once people find out you have ever flipped a few pieces, they wont give you any kind of decent price on anything because they think anyone who "flips" doesn't care about audio?

Here is the problem I have:

I believe you should offer someone a fair price. 1/3rd of what you can flip it for if thats you're goal. I get mad on forums in other places when people PUPOSEFULLY rub something they got a deal on in someones face, you know who you are, and not all those who "flip" do this.

Sure business and capialism is all part of america, you do have a right to a profit, but if you get a piece of audio equipment from someone for $20 bucks and you know it's worth $300-500 you are taking advantage of that person 95% of the time and it is WRONG. nobody who knows what they have lets stuff go for that little amount of money. did you buy something from someone for $100 and knew the whole time you could sell it for 3k all day long?

Twice on two other forums I have witnessed people BRAG about how little thay paid someone for something and BRAG about how much they are gonna make off of it. They get most of this stuff from people who know nothing of what the stuff will actually sell for, or people in horrible circumstances and have no choice.

let me tell you something I know for a fact, because I live this everyday:

you think you get some cool scores off those unknowing people? you outta see what people offer you to sell when you show them youre fair. the only thing better than that cool find off of someone that doesnt know what they have is when people who do know what they have start bringing you stuff, sure none of it cost me $10 or $20 bucks, but its much better. Word travels fast when people know you will be fair with them.

I am not against people making money or even buying gear to re sell it. there is a difference between making a profit and bending someone over, and you know I'm right, just because you can get away with it doesnt make it right.

Personally, I could care less what somebody paid for x object. All that matters is what it is worth to me and what price the owner and I can agree on.

On Antiques Roadshow was a woman who bought some Philadelphia style Chippendale table for $20 at a garage sale. It was later sold at Sotheby's for just under $500,000.

All bidders present knew exactly what she had paid it for. Did it matter? Not a hill of beans.

I;m more referring to items with no determined price and a person knowingly lowballs someone, if the buyer has no influence on the price ( like if you walk into a thrift and they have priced it already and you pay that price) thats not the same thing. Or when it's already an amazing beyond amazing deal and you badger the person further down.

No exaggeration, I read the OP twice and am not sure if the sentiment is FOR or AGAINST "flipping".

Sure most of us have bought and sold used equipment. But that's not why this is one of the most awesome forums around. I'm pretty poor at it and usually end up buying high and selling low. I don't see myself as a flipper. And I have no interest in reading about the buying or selling experiences of others.

Because it's usually petty BS that would never affect them anyway and they enjoy whining.. That's where I usually stop reading too...

I've flipped a LOT of gear.. Some I did just because there was money to be made and I had no interest in the piece..

If you don't flip stuff you find, you might as well just walk past that $100 bill laying on the sidewalk. It's no different..

I hear people all the time talk about being broke, or can't afford this or that... To me, that's because they are lazy..

If you can come up with a few bucks to buy something cheaper than it's worth, then sell that, then take the profit and invest it into something else to flip, then you are working for your self... If you don't do things like this, you have no motivation to have a little extra money, and I don't want to hear about you being broke..

I've flipped a whole lot more than stereo gear.. I've flipped all kinds of furniture, clothing, vehicles, so on and so forth... It's free money... if you don't count the effort you put into the time to sell it.. or fix it up...

People that I've found that cuss flippers are usually tight wads, and a lot of times, will only sell something because they NEED the money, not because they want some extra money.. They won't go out to look for things to flip, because that would be too much like work...

These are just my observations.. and if my observations offend you... well...

I buy a lot of audio, and I sell a lot of audio. But........ I do this for a reason. I buy and sell the stuff I don't want so I can buy and keep the stuff I do want. I have my own "audio money" that is not part of our household money, and anything I buy out of that money is fine with my wife. I buy a lot of the stuff I keep at retail prices, so I have no problem selling things at retail, no matter how cheap I got it. I see nothing at all wrong with flipping as long as you are doing it to better your own equipment.

the first half was for those that think if you ever sell anything you ever had and make ANY money on it you are evil. It was to make a more precise point of exactly what "kind" of flipping I was referring to.

It depends on a plethora of external circumstances & variables which is near impossible to summarize in any meaningful kind of way.

Suffice to say - caveat emptor as well as caveat venditor (may the seller beware) apply equally.

There is a difference between ripping someone off & buying at an auction or estate sale. If a seller wants $10 for a $500 item at a garage sale, they want $10 - pay the man. Thats different in my book from being misleading or deceitful. I knew a guy in Chi who happened across a recent widow running CL ad. She was selling her husbands audio for a fraction of the CL value. He helped her price the electronic components & cut himself a deal on the speakers. Very above board & it worked for everyone. Did he rip her off? Not in my book. Some of this is a judgement call.

BTW. my wife is a flipper too.. Vintage clothing, housewares, collectibles and such... She sells them on Etsy..

So far it's funded our water treatment system, which was by no way cheap, plus it just put a nice good decent set of new tires on her car, plus it funds all of her new purchases to flip...

She bought some old pennants for $1 each.. .About 50 of them... So far she's raked in over $700 from them... We're not talking chump change she plays with.. .I've seen her make $300 and more profit each, on several posters... We made a $800 profit on a vase...

If you want to cuss people for funding things they need, then more power to you.. but I'm happy we have some extra money to buy things we need or want... and I'm glad I don't have a boss telling me how to do it..

Anyone remember the old game Payday? Remember when you'd get a card that says you bought a painting for $25 and sold it for $1000? Well, that's what we do.. .cuss us if you want... I'm smiling all the way to the bank wit that good feeling you got when you were playing that game of Payday.

"I hear people all the time talk about being broke, or can't afford this or that... To me, that's because they are lazy" oh, really? I think you should be more mean spirited & less understanding. Or maybe that sentence was not intended to sound the way it came out.

If someone offers to sell you something for $20 that's "worth" $300, you aren't ripping them off. Obviously to them its worth $20. And, they haven't invested the time and energy into learning what gear is worth and how to fix it. Time and energy is also "worth" something.

If I was to monetize the time I spend checking CL or going to thrift stores or garage sales looking for deals, then those "deals" are actually quite costly to come by.

In the grand scheme of things, this topic, is so trivial that I just don't care. I'm glad, I guess, that you are passionate about it. Just remember, it's not really all that important and the world will for the time being, keep spinning.

Right! So much undertone here. If you want a deal, work for it. I know the flippers around me and they create their own luck.
