Why "Flipper" is an F word here.

Is the OP saying that its ok for a buyer to unknowingly get a great deal,
but if he knows that he is getting a great deal, it's bad?

In short, is ignorance bliss?

We can go on forever about right/wrong; moral/immoral; ethical/unethical; honesty/dishonesty etc etc etc.. and as pointed out this had already been discussed many times before.

Does it really get us anywhere and more importantly, is it going to have any bearing on the behavior of any individual in any particular situation?

I very much doubt it.

no, not at all, if you will "knock over an old lady to get a deal" thats completely different, but someone like you would not understand that based on your previous statement. I have already said exactly what I was talking about as simple as it could be said, apparently, you ignnored that and are attempting to twist around what I originally said into something else because reading and paying attention to exactly what I said makes you look bad. you're the guy who sees someone looking at a box of records and comes up and pushes them out of the way before they finish, and you don't care that you did it. I have a female friend who I have seen grown men BUMP her out of the way so they can look at the EXACT stuff shes looking in, I have had that done to me. if they were looking forst I wait until they are done, I don't push people aside and act like its nothing.

To me the bad side of 'Flipping' is someone who may buy an item of gear for say $100, wipes the outside over with a cloth, and then attempts to re-sell for say $300, describing it as a clean piece, and maybe in addition 'reconditioned' or 'recapped' or whatever he/she can get away with.

This person could not be less interested in the gear itself, except for the profit he/she can make out of it.

And as I pointed out, how is this any different than a company trying to get you to buy their over priced cables or speakers? Which many people do buy....

...
I believe you should offer someone a fair price. 1/3rd of what you can flip it for if thats you're goal...

I'm not sure I understand the above statement. Perhaps you could expound upon it further.

Given this example: an item that you could flip for, say, $300, does the above statement mean:

- If you offer them $20, that is wrong and unethical and you are ripping them off?

- If you offer them $100 (which is 1/3 of $300), that is acceptable and ethical and it's a decent deal for both parties?

- If you offer them more than $100, you are giving them a good deal?

Based on that, apparently it just a matter of where you draw the 'line'. What is magic about 1/3?

The fact is that there are many lines in life, and nobody has ultimate knowledge to know where they all are. Everybody (buyer and seller) sets their own lines.

Sure business and capialism is all part of america, you do have a right to a profit, but if you get a piece of audio equipment from someone for $20 bucks and you know it's worth $300-500 you are taking advantage of that person 95% of the time and it is WRONG. nobody who knows what they have lets stuff go for that little amount of money. did you buy something from someone for $100 and knew the whole time you could sell it for 3k all day long?

That's America. That's how people make money. Buy low, sell high. Buy parts, manufacture a product, sell the product for more than the sum of what the parts and labor are worth. (I guess Apple is a flipper)

This whole thread reminds me of a quote from the movie "The Money Pit":

Walter: It doesn't make any sense, why would somebody be selling a million dollar house for a hundred thousand?
Jack: Who knows? A divorce, loan sharks, a scandal. The point is you get to capitalize on another human being's misfortune. That's the basis of real estate. So do we have a deal?

It comes down to intent, in the end and I don't have enough time to get into anyone's head to determine it. Some flippers are good people, some are terrible people, but it's no different than just about any other segment of society, I'd guess.

No answer from the OP. He has gotten a great deal in the past and not informed the seller.

Folks, lets put this thread to bed.

I have a nice room with audio gear i like. But i still search for stuff. If i find something i like better i will sell what i have and jkeep the new one. Butbsometimes if i see something of value somewhere for cheap i will buy it and flip it. I just flipped some stuff i bought at an estate sale, so the other stuff i bought at same estate sale which i will keep was essentially for free since the flip cover the entire cost of whatbi spent that day. Whats the problem with that? I should be applauded if anything!

I can see your point simi, now you have stated it again... when you get right down to it, it is the same other than the item for sale is assumed to be 'not new' whereas in the cables example we seem to be talking brand new and unused?

Nothing more from me.

The witch hunt on flippers here isn't as bad as it was in years past. The way I see it, a mans gotta eat. Car flipper, house flipper, audio flipper...it's a legitimate source of income.

To me a flipper, in this audio hobby, to me is a person who buys low - sells high and IS NOT interested in anything other than money.

If you get mad at the forums then that is YOUR problem - maybe it hits too close to home.

"Flipping thread, take 47."

True dat. Folks who join the forum just to flip aren't my favorite but frankly I don't care nor do I pay attention to it. It's none of my business.

In the end you can't be ripped off if you do your homework. Your laziness is not the other fella's fault.

So iis what the OP wants is that an estate sale charge $500 for that sweet marantz instead of $50? Would that make you happy? Estate sales/garage sales would be empty that way.

I see zero wrong with flipping. You are not stealing! You paid someone what they asked and someone paid you what you asked! If they know the value is not your problem. Everyone is responsible for themselves. It really just seems like gear envy if you hate a flipper.

I've dealt with plenty of so-called flippers, most of them were good sellers, both here and elsewhere. I think some here like to view the audio flipper in the same light as they do a crooked used car salesman. There are some out there, and if their ad is unreasonable I simply move on to the next one. It isn't that hard to do.

I once bought a leg prosthesis for $5 from a 79 year old widow at a garage sale. Everyone was happy until she discovered it was her own prosthesis.

I quickly sold it back to her for $50 and we both walked away smiling.

I totally disagree with the original post .If a seller hasnt done due diligence on what they have and whats its worth thats on them.Just show me what you have and tell me what you want.If its a right deal to me Ill buy it,if not ill pass. Before the internet knowledge use to be king in the purchase.Today any bozo can find out what he has simply going to google or ebay.Im not a teacher nor educator and im certainly not negotiating against myself pricing what you have then trying to buy it.The original post is silly at best.

I got them by paying the seller what they said they wanted, not by trying to get it for way less. Never did the 10 cents on a dollar. best deal I ever got, the liquidator made me a killer deal because I helped him make a ton of money, as a thank you he quoted me a really low price on something, I did not influence his decision at all and he knew exactly what kind of a deal he had given me.
