Why "Flipper" is an F word here.

jdwk;8557634) I get mad on forums in other places when people PUPOSEFULLY rub something they got a deal on in someones face said:
Not to worry jdwk. You are just afflicted with a very strange disease called "conscience". Sometimes it is also referred to it as "decency".

I once bought a leg prosthesis for $5 from a 79 year old widow at a garage sale. Everyone was happy until she discovered it was her own prosthesis.

I quickly sold it back to her for $50 and we both walked away smiling.

Pretty well sums up the thread title... neatly.

There has been gear I wanted that I couldn't afford because I couldn't get a "deal" on it... So what I did was go out and look for things I could get a "deal" on.. Make money selling that, then could afford the gear I couldn't get a "deal" on..

Exactly what I said! Amen :thmbsp:

The witch hunt on flippers here isn't as bad as it was in years past. The way I see it, a mans gotta eat. Car flipper, house flipper, audio flipper...it's a legitimate source of income.

Yep. Just avoid being a d-bag. That may mean different things in different situations, and it's hard to make rules. The rulemaking is what usually send these threads off into space. If you always check yourself against that internal standard of not being a d-bag, what more can anyone ask?

My last 'score' was a Yamaha T2 tuner... When I auditioned it at the guy's house it didn't sound right. Low vol on one side and a fizzle noise on same side.

We switched things around every way possible but the problem was with one ch on the T2. I told the guy I will pass on it but thanks

He asked what would I pay for it. I gave him a ridiculously low offer. (he knew the value of the tuner) He accepted

After a thorough cleaning, deoxit and reconnecting & connecting all inside cables a few times it began working 'as new' -- That's been 6 months ago

If I sold the T2 I would ask top price :) with no guilt

really? when people resort to things like this as a response, it proves you are onto something. Sorta shows you who stands where. Never once in this thread did I say making a profit was bad, but there are people that keep trying to say that is is what I am saying. funny aint it? All my ponts are clearly spelled out , and it's in WRITING should be less of a chance people get what youre saying wrong. If this had been a verbal discussion I could see some forgetting what I said and making wrong comments based on not hearing everything.

1. knowingly bending someone over so you can make a profit is wrong.
2. if a person agrees to sell you something for a good price and has full knowledge of what they are doing, it's not the same thing.

3. if you think "knocking over an old lady to get a deal" is how you should be.....
3. trying to say things that you know are untrue to get a lower price is wrong.

4. selling something for a profit is great as long as no dishonesty is involved in doing so. If "working hard" to find a deal really means "spending a whole lot of time looking for someone who doesnt know what they have, or has no idea how to find out" which is getting rarer everyday, thats not "working for a deal thats "looking for a scam" .

if some story involving a prosthetic leg, that sounds more like an old Marx brothers routine, is all you can come up with.....

"Flippers" get a bad name because of all of the idiotic TV shows
that are on now. I have been buying and selling records for 10+ years so that I can afford records that I want and occasionally pay a bill.I may be considered a flipper now, but 10-15 years ago I would have been considered a record dealer.

I'm not sure I understand the above statement. Perhaps you could expound upon it further.

Given this example: an item that you could flip for, say, $300, does the above statement mean:

- If you offer them $20, that is wrong and unethical and you are ripping them off?

- If you offer them $100 (which is 1/3 of $300), that is acceptable and ethical and it's a decent deal for both parties?

- If you offer them more than $100, you are giving them a good deal?

Based on that, apparently it just a matter of where you draw the 'line'. What is magic about 1/3?

The fact is that there are many lines in life, and nobody has ultimate knowledge to know where they all are. Everybody (buyer and seller) sets their own lines.

.

the 1/3 is an example, for clarity, but I see how what I said could sound the way you read it.

lol yeah, I think those shows are highly editied also to make it look easier tha n is, near me there is a group of guys that after they buy a stoage locker, save boxes of electronics (just the boxes mind you, they take what was in them out) creatively arrange things to look like there is something there, and get people to bid on their trash, not telling anyone it's completely picked through. as we can see, some here would think thats just fine. but they dupe all the wannabe's that see these shows and don't realize this is going on and they do it all the time.

I score karma by telling CL sellers they can make much more. And I regularly tell them this is a good, very good deal, but that it's also a get it gone price.

I see nothing wrong with flipping. What I have a problem with is methods that expose their greediness.Example... lowballers.

Dude, it was humor. I got it, and pretty sure everybody else did, too.
I especially like the 'we both walked away' part. You know, 'cause she got her leg back and all.

But really, these kinds of threads do no favors to AK as viewed from the outside the forum.

"Lighten up Francis"

I think we should be more concerned about all the unfortunate Flippers that end up in tuna nets.
