I hate melons, all kinds of melons, they taste bad, even the smell is sickening to me.
Most people like melons though, you probably do too.
If you like melons you probably don't understand why I don't like them.

But am I right when I say melons taste bad? or are you right when you say they taste good?

This is why discussing music taste is pointless.

So you've decided to never divulge ever again to anyone whether you like a certain musical(I use that term loosely)composition? What about the discussion of amps, speakers, and all that other subjective stuff? Time to shut AK down?

Its all in how you express your opinion. Do you make it clear that its just your opinion or do you pass it off as fact while also demonizing it?

I think the reason why it seems we tend toward vintage is just that, most members here are also vintage. We came here by way of seeking info on gear or music we might be purchasing. The younger crowd seems more interested in low rez music playback for it's portability rather than the quality. For the purchase of an Ipod how much research is really necessary if your only concern is portability? How many of the younger crowd would consider plunking down $1000 or more for a set of earbuds, or purchase a dedicated tube headphone amplifier just for improved sound quality? Where the younger crowd has shown interest in sound quality is in their cars, albeit with over driven bass. I'm not saying all younger people feel this way, or that it's a bad thing. Younger people still living at home don't have the funds or a house of their own so the ability to take their music with them is paramount, I know it was when I first started driving. As time went by sound quality became more and more important, I now had a home of my own, and so started the upgrade roller coaster ride.

SO if it's not one extreme, then it has to be the other extreme right? all subjects should be treated the same?

I do discuss particular songs or bands with my friends, but it often becomes a discussion about audio quality or technicalities.
Often it just ends up as "I like that, that part sound great for these and those reasons" or "that doesn't really get to me in any way, I'm more in to stuff like this or that"

I think that is quite different from dissing an entire genre or two in a public forum.

With regards to amps and speakers, or even computers or bicycles, you can get in to things like, how does a particular amp manage a particular pair of speakers.
Or, does the bike deal well with stormy weather, does the computer handle the tasks it should given the specs, does the monitor actually have as dark black levels as the specs suggests.

I listen rap on my vintage system using a streaming service. I record Tiesto and Ibiza chill out music (cafe del mar style) from CD to reel and play it back. I listen to classical music on my ipod with new headphones. I listen to pink floyd in my car with a big fat 15 inch sub.

Its all the same to me, I enjoy it all for what it is.

I also stare at my system and speakers affectionally while the rig is off. I guess I'm weird like that. :)

That's because you are a bona fide, MUSIC LOVER. A lot of these other cats are music fetishists. They only respond to that narrow range of things that happen to turn them on.

This thread reminds me of the deathmobile scene in Animal House.

Is 500+ posts in less than a week on a thread started by a FNG a record?

Man! You would have thought that he asked "Who killed JFK'.

If you go back and read the orignal post we have wandered off to:

So, to be a food lover then one must enjoy all edible things on the planet? Or is it OK to like only the things that appeal to our individual palates. If one doesn't eat all edible things on the planet are we then food fetishists? To be a lover of women must one love all types of women even if they don't appeal to our senses? Hope you have a more open mind than that when reviewing audio gear.

OK, I've officially put on my boots. By the next page or two, I'll have put the waders on. It's getting pretty deep.

BTW I'm in the whatever floats your boat crowd, but I like what I like and I don't really care what anyone else thinks.

Of course not; don't be silly.

However, that is different from categorically dismissing an entire genre of food. What food lover says, "I hate Italian food. It sucks. There is nothing good about it. I defy you to produce an Italian dish that tastes good!" What "lover of women" would ever say, "I despise brunettes. They aren't even women! I don't want to be around any brunettes, and that's that."

I don't like polka, any polka, does that make me not a music lover? Our senses respond to different things, you might like polka, I don't, who cares, but categorizing all people that don't like polka as music fetishisst is no different than categorizing a whole genre of music as not music.

Oh come on! You've never said to anyone ever, "that song sucks"? There are multiple levels of intensity and circumstance in every discussion. Contempt and animosity toward individuals are what need to be curbed, not the expression of ones views.
