why is Audio Karma so heavily into vintage... pretty much everything.

Forum still seemingly vintage heavy and this statement was not answering any of my questions...

Well, because it is what it is. The why really is immaterial.

Enjoy the folks here for what they are and if they can't provide you the conversation on the topics you seek, find a group who can.

I'm not saving you're not welcome, because you are. Do like someone suggested and start a few music threads and see what happens. Maybe you'll be the one to reboot the system :dunno:

Because I AM vintage. I like new/modern gear also, it just hasn't been in the budget for me lately. There's also "retro" gear that runs the gamut from Crosley to Line Magnetic. Plus there's the thrill of the find...

Not sure how you can question the direction a forum takes. It is what it is. I'm not here because I buy vintage but because I never got rid of the stuff I bought 40 years ago. And I like the vibe. And the wealth of knowledge. Let it go. Every forum is different. This one is predominately about older equipment and is predominately populated by older hi-fi afficionados who own examples of said equipment. It's how the site has evolved over time. But it was also designed to be a place where vintage owners could hang out. If you're uncomfortable with that then move on. No one here need apologize for or justify how it is.

Hey, man. I'm totally OK with Audio Karma. If everyone's into vintage here its cool.
And of course no one needs to apologize.

If you don't want to post then why complain about what other's post about? :scratch2:

I see you have several old game consoles in your setup... obviously you can relate to the "why" part of your question.

Participate. You may be pleasantly surprised.

And welcome to AK,

Rob

If he wants to discuss vintage game consoles audiokarma's sister site videokarma would be the place to go.

To me vintage has "The Mojo" where as new Hi Tech equipment just seem too sterile, even though I am sure that the new stuff probably has much better specs.

I started the thread. I'm just afraid no ones gonna respond.

I find it amusing that the sticky right above this thread is Grumpy's "Do you think AK is about vintage or cheap"?

cuz' it's not.

I'll try and answer your question. There is some orientation to older equipment in this forum notwithstanding that there is a Cutting Edge group.

However there are 2 kinds of people typically.

There are those who feel that the build quality, sound quality, etc. is better and then there are the people (like me!) who find it a valuable resource for researching used equipment that is found at thrifts, garage sales, etc. at good prices allowing one to put together a decent system at a low price.

This is of course an oversimplification. For example it has turned me on to some music, again typically older, but not always. As others have stated it's a forum. If it's not to your taste look elsewhere or make your own contributions. There is a music discussion forum where you could talk about more recent music.

When I bought most of my stereo gear it was new. Now it's called vintage. Kinda like the majority of AK members!

That about nails it. We are all a bunch of old farts that refuse to admit that the current hip hop and rap mp3's played through ear buds sounds vastly better than any of our old LP's, tapes and CD's played through our vintage equipment. It is just our senility and clinging to the past that keeps us going. We even find it impossible to believe that the current pop music will endure for 40 or 50 years like the classic rock music our parents so hated when we were young. I am sure that just as we enjoy the rock anthems of our youth, the youth of today will be taking their social security checks to the bank while listening to "I love you Poppy" on their vintage mp3 players.

Well not everyone is into vintage and if you look theres even a forum called modern day hi fi.
With over 100k plus members and only a certain % posting it might be that a majority of those that post are into vintage gear.

Speaking just for myself:

Equipment - Most of my system was actually purchased new back in the day. Yeah I am that old and it still works well. What I have needed to replace was gotten used cause I'm a CHEAP OLD CODGER! So it just looks vintage.

Music - See that CHEAP OLD CODGER above, well the OLD CODGER part describes my taste in music.

So all in all, I'm an Old Codger.

I lol'd waaay too hard. Its so true too!
........vintage mp3 players...

I have to play here too, speaking for myself I prefer listening to what I grew up with which was mostly 60s, 70s and 80s. As I have gotten older my taste has expanded to include what my folks enjoyed back in the day as well as music my 19 and 23 year old kids like to listen to today, in fact my 19 year old son enjoys much of my "old" music as well. It is a learning experience both directions if you have an open mind.

As for equipment I still have my original system from 1976 but a few years ago discovered I enjoy the sound of tubes and typically the affordable way into that world is vintage which I also enjoy searching for as well as repairing and rebuilding.

As always your mileage may vary.

I thought one of the main reasons older rock along with jazz and classical music is recorded with concern for the dynamics and clarity and spatial qualities whereas today's music is recorded without those characteristics. How important is sound quality when listening to death metal or garage band genre's of music? Do you really think KEF Blade's are going to make that music sound better?

And when i go to music forums most of all music I seem to see is 60's 70's or 80's type stuff and if its not its some alt rock of some sort.
Why is it so rare to hear mention of dubstep, jpop, house, chillout or pop? Not even Daft Punk?
I know music is pretty much 100% opinion based but man, does nodody here have musical tastes for NEW music?

It's hard to tell if you're complaining about new vs old music or just complaining that the genres you like aren't more popular. How exactly does a new alternative rock album not qualify as new music?

Almost all the music I listen to is less than 20 years old. I listen to mostly Heavy Metal, Nu Metal, Alternative Metal, Alternative Rock, Post Hardcore, etc. I also listen to some music like Skrillex, Example, The Crystal Method, Pendulum, etc.
