Why is good audio a man thing?

Back on topic, my wife is into good sound. She doesn't care how it happens and it has to be relatively easy to use, but she couldn't live with an Acoustimass or other lifestyle type system any more. Oddly, she likes the fact that my speakers don't just blend into the scenery and behave themselves.

Simple...

Boys grew up with wagons.

Girls grew up with dolls.

Men can get into what women like, do, and appreciate but women can't get into anything that they are not interested in...period. Kind of like 'tunnel thinking'. Not saying anything bad about women, just the way it is by in large, from what I've seen and experienced.

Men and women think 2 totally different ways. Two different sets of priorities. Men can be flexiable, women are not. Women's minds are about as stiff as a 2x4. Nothing wrong with that, unless your trying to get a job done, professionally or unprofessionally.

I have met and know women who are into music, even play music in live bands, but 'they still are not' into stereos, in general. My brother's wife, listens to and loves music on the TV cable channel constantly and plays bass in a local band. She has a storage chest full of LPs, and I mean FULL, all great rock stuff which most of us would LOVE to have! (Actually it's worth some cash, all 'original pressings' in fine shape). She has a regular stereo system but 'never uses it'. She also has a TT but no cart. So...I gave her a new AT cart that I had extra, a good one, maybe 30 hours on it, it sounded nice really. I installed it on her TT and set the TT up for her. She 'NEVER' played the TT or the stereo. After 2 months I asked her if she used the TT. She said no. So I said "If you not using the TT would you mind if I took the cart back?" (I mean, I could use it someday) She said..."sure, no problem". I took the cart off and she put the TT 'into the closet'.

Women are not into stereos. I don't really get it and I don't really care. Tried to care but it didn't work. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Think I will try to 'make a deal' with her on the records. Been thinking about that. She did tell me she really doesn't care anymore about them. Next time I see her!

I am stunned by this. "period".
This is about the most closed minded dribble I've heard in a long time. I will risk the "All Audio, no attitude" mantra to state this too. You're limited experiences should be so general. "Woman are [this|that]". Wow. 2011 and all. Maybe there's not more woman into stereos because of these attitudes?

So, what you are saying is that women aren't into audio because they aren't stereo types?

JK....couldn't resist.....had much the same reaction as you, but am too much of a smart @$$ to control myself

I know some women who are right into audio, a friend of mine is a big-dollar audiophile and his mother owns British speakers and separates gear. Another set of her speakers came from another audiophile, that was a woman too. Some women are picky about sound. Some are not.

My wife has zero interest in the gadget end of stereo, but she's the first to notice if something is wrong or if speakers are bad.

And by amazing coincidence, I think that the woman owned store that Art K was talking about is called Stereotypes...

Yes! My experience exactly. And when I shopped for my first real stereo system back in the day when real stereo stores existed, the salesman insisted I bring in my bride-to-be because he said women were better at discerning subtle differences in sound.

I picked out the components, but my wife insisted on the pair of Advents we ended up with.

"Stunned"!!! LOL. That's funny. I take it your easly stunned, if I stunned you I'm sorry. It is 2011, I forgot. :>)

Stereos are 'slightly mechinical', so I think that's why women don't use them or like them very much, in general, along with the money that you have to spend. You know, knobs, levers, calibrations, for sure connecting cables and cable management, spending money on stereos and equipment like headshells and cartridges, brushes, cleaning fluid, etc. That's all I'm saying, that's what I have experienced and seen, many times, not only in stereos but in many fields. I know many ' persons ' would much rather prefer a simple Bose system, Of/Off. It's simple to operate without any maintenance.

I stated: "there's nothing wrong with that".

Limited experience???
I have 'a bit' more experience than the average guy with women and men in professional industrial situations requiring mechinical and group thinking to achieve an objective.

2011: what's that got to do with it????????? Is that a 'new world order" thing or something? ...Basics are Basics.

Ok, let me rephrase it for the 2011 generation:
Women, in general, I believe, I may be wrong (we will just call everyone ' persons '), many persons dislike stereos that have many controls, componets, cables, and adjustments. They would rather just turn on a system with one button. ON/OFF...it works. Like that. But not all...just some 'persons' or most, maybe, maybe not. I don't know for sure, but I pretty much know what I've seen and experienced, but then again, maybe not, I think so, maybe.

Was that ok? Sorry if you were offended, I really am. It was just an observation, IN GENERAL, that I have noticed.

There are tons of 'things' women are great at and men just can't do as well, in general, as women consistently, like 'industrial overhead container crane operators in cargo loading/discharge ports'. (Read that in a European maritime magazine years ago.)

Oh boy...here comes the industrial overhead container crane operators!! :>)

I think we can (or perhaps should) all agree that generalizations can be generally true, but don't necessarily apply to every individual in the set.

I'm not offended when someone says, for example, men aren't into cooking, even though I cook, and quite well. Hopefully women are not offended when someone says they are generally not interested in fiddling with mechanical things, even though some of them obviously are.

It's only dangerous territory when we actually believe it applies to everyone, or we assume it applies to someone we are talking to rather than actually finding out for ourselves.

Hey Guys: On Mothers Day instead of getting her flowers and taking her out to dinner buy her a new Cart for the TT.:bash:

Thanks toxcrusadr.

Well said and I totally agree. You said it much better than I in far less fewer words, and politically correct.

Wish I knew how to cook well!

Thanks...as far as cooking, just ally yourself with someone who can...that's what my wife did!

I think this is getting out of hand a little bit. I mean, we collect stereo gear and listen to music on it. We aren't developing the finer points of string theory or charting the far reaches of galaxies here. Saying that some kind of lacking required higher brain function makes women incompatible is revealing some other kind of issue that you (and many other people in this thread) seem to have and is just plain off topic. I'm not sure if some of you have learned this yet but if someone isn't interested in the same things as you it doesn't make them stupid or incapable. It just makes them different than you.

I think it'd be the exception to the rule that a woman/girl would have even a passing interest in gear and listening to it.
I think it's also an exception to the rule that any of my male friends/family members have more than a passing interest in gear and listening to it...passionately:)

Fascinating how straight males so often miss the central point in these discussions. Us fairies know a thing or two about women that you guys always seem to miss. Most women who are exposed to so called high-end systems hate them for one simple reason, their hearing in the upper treble is way better than us males therefore they're far more sensitive to the kinds of distortion and tilted upper treble tricks audio manufactures have learnt compensates for diminished hearing their male customers suffer from . If you don't believe that have a look at the frequency response of expensive moving coil cartridges which just happen to be favored by well off middle aged men. Notice also women's reactions to 'the sacred listening chair for one' syndrome. This last is why*women favor home theatre as it's an activity the whole family can enjoy whereas the audio only industry has painted itself into a corner with the 'one true sweet spot' syndrome.
And don't get me started on the hideous looking speakers the industry insists on spewing out. Bose realized decades ago women hate looking at the machinery and have made billions out of that simple lesson.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread as I think it's a pointless debate; but no matter a gay man has the female mind figured out to a T. I am in No way bashing anyone's sexual orientation but WTF does it have to do with the topic at hand? Us "straight males"? Really?

Such sweeping generalizations just piss me off no matter who you are.

Is there a spread sheet indicating well off middle aged mens preference for the frequency response of expensive moving coil carts?

I've never heard Any woman react to your supposed sacred listening chair for one...

So the whole family can't listen to music because there's only One chair right?

Okay. Your a Bose fan. That's entirely fine and acceptable. No worries. But if you think there was a board meeting decades ago and they said "Man! If we started making itty-bitty little speakers that sounded good Women would buy the **** out of them!"

Arrgh. You leave me speechless.

Matt

To read this entire thread, it's both amusing and astonishing at the same time. The insinuations, the stereotyping, the prejudices, the generalizations, the bigotry, and just plain ignorance that's evidenced in this thread is actually quite frightening. :sigh:

I have reached the same conclusion.

The only gratifying part of this discussion is how many members, both men and women, have strongly pointed out that this level of stereotyping and generalization is both utterly ignorant and unacceptable.
