Why is good audio a man thing?

First, what percentage of members here are female? anyone know? I would bet it's under 20%. But then the question becomes WHY? I've never heard of a "lady cave" or any place where women go to enjoy great music.

Why is it always a man thing? We know they enjoy music, but they just don't come close (normally) to our obsessiveness about the equipment. You pretty much never see female salespeople at an audio store either, come to think of it.

You never seem to see female machinists either. There must be something in male genes that makes us more particular about getting to, or near, perfection.

For the same reason men tend to be more interested in machines in general - it's certainly nothing about audio or music.

You do realize how "lady cave" sounds, right?
 
a valid point , really ....and its not a right/left brain thing : I tend to be the analytical type : but I know just as many "arts" type males that are very particular about their audio equipment .....but you don't hear of too many type A or B women into audio ...... in fact , I'd wager to guess that there is a higher percentage of women seriously into cars and the mechanics thereof than audio ......good question .....why?
 
I think in general, women are less intrigued by technical things. Not that they couldn't understand complex technical details, I just think it usually doesn't interest them.

Women view the world from the inside out, and men view the world from the outside in. Us men react more to external stimuli than women do.
 
Women might like good sound, but don't usually fuss over gear, or even care if their system isn't anything special. 10 years ago, I had to drag my 60 year old Mom into a specialty audio store kicking and screaming. She just didn't want to be bothered, and was prepared to buy whatever was expedient. I prevailed upon her to take a little time and budget a little more than she had planned to spend. It wasn't anything audiophile, but she wound up with Acoustic Energy speakers, a Nakamichi receiver, and some basic cables (Audioquest, I believe). Once it was all set up, she couldn't believe the difference it made over her old BPC stereo.

My wife is the same. She enjoys listening to music on my stereos, and usually doesn't think about it. Once, she brought some of her favorite cds and ripped to her work computer. She told me they hardly sounded like the same songs ripped using Itunes and played back on crappy computer speakers.

You are suggesting that men are more sensitive to the world, and women are more sensitive to thoughts and emotions, right? Following this, I would think maybe men are more inclined to appreciate the pure beauty of a painting, but the women would appreciate how it made them feel.
 
My mom is a rarity, she loves good audio. Back in the 70s, my dad produced Motown, and my parents always had a halfway decent stereo. When she comes to my house, she would much rather listen to the stereo instead of watch TV.

Exactly! It goes back to our hunter/gatherer roots. The women nurtured the family unit, while the men fed and protected it.
 
Some do and some don't, but I will not pass judgement on this. Let everyone enjoy the music!

One of the mysteries of life. Ever hear one guy say to the other guy "do these pants make my butt look big"? Goes with the gender I guess.
 
My mother-in-law loved good sound and I gave her my Dual 1229, Goodmans Speakers and a Harmon Kardon Award A500 tube amp. She loved that system until she passed away. My wife, on the other hand, is not into sound. She loves a good handbag the way I'll drool over a Mac amp. I guess that's life!

A girl told me that looking at little babies, usually men start to broke everything to see how they work, and girls usually don`t do that.

I think most girls can`t hear the difference, the same way I cant see the difference between 2 haircuts :)
 
Boys grew up with wagons. Girls grew up with dolls. That's the whole thing right there.

Nothing wrong with either. Just women don't like stereos unless it's "pretty" and has a hyped commercial name. Doesn't matter how it sounds, as long as it 'look's new and pretty' in the house. Bose and Sony are most preferable. For the 'looks' and the name. To them it's a show off thing 'only', never to be played. It doesn't really matter what it 'sounds' like.

Bose and Sony. Ohhhhh, you have Bose! And Sony! I wish I had that! And it has to be 'brand new' and look pretty. Dolls.

Guys will go for the older quality amp, with the nicks and whatever, that cranks great sounds. Wagons.

And women will say: when you gonna get that ugly piece of $*%& out of the living room??? Well, that ugly thing happens to be an AU-111. Like that.

Women want to impress visually. Guys want something that sounds great and don't care about much about how it physical 'looks', but if it looks great, so much the better!

Yep...my wagon has a bunch of dents, the paint is peeling off...but the wheels are in great shape, it's lubed, and it sure hauls 'stuff'.

Oh, that's a pretty doll you have.

I have had girlfriends that loved music, I have been to concerts with my Mom
many times and she loved Alice Cooper live and was ecstatic when I took her
to see Roy Orbison, She goes to the summer concerts in the parks all the time
and she's over 70 years old.
I have a very good female friend who is a bass player and is very into music and
so is the other female members in the band > http://www.thundherstruck.com
Seen these Girls many times > http://www.theironmaidens.com they will rock
your socks off and they love doing it to you.
I guess living around a large metropolitan area you just find more women who
are into music. :D

A couple of corrections: This topic has been brought up at least a couple dozen times. The reason that you didn't see more of them, is the majority of them aren't "fun" and end up closed.
