Why music is getting worse. It's only 12 minutes, it's worth the time.

Hey, it's all cool! It's OK after the rinse cycle, whichever way do you listen to tunes?

I don't think people telling others to justify how to collect or listen to music is cool. Right?
Well, having worked in a record store when CDs were first becoming hip and seeing how folks then were dumping their vinyl collections to buy these things and now seeing folks go vice versa with it, and tying up lots of money doing so, I feel like I've had a front row seat to the way that society convinces us to spend our music budget... and I guess that I just can't help but give folks who haven't lived through all of that a different perspective on it.

I think with our demo here most of us have lived it.

I do that with streaming and vinyls, I do not see a reason to limit myself in a hobby I love
Like I think that I said elsewhere, it's not that I have any issue with streaming, but that I kind of already have more than enough options for the amount of time that I spend listening to music, so I don't need more at this point...

The benefit of a streaming subscription is access to a constant flow of new music in the genres I prefer, and the algorithms are a nice complement to my reading about new music via various online channels that I regularly peruse. I now only get physical media that's virtually free (library cleanouts, Goodwills & other thrift stores) and record store purchases for items (LPs, CDs, tapes) that have significant replay value for me (an increasingly high bar).

That being said, my wife still prefers CDs and listening to music she knows, so we use a wide variety of physical and online media in the house.

For me, the $15/month I pay for the streaming is worth it, I use for at least 3 hours on an average day.

The thread degenerates from why music is getting worse - and the original message is that (1) music is too easy to make and (2) music is too easy to consume - into yet another physical vs streaming preferences, which is boring AF.

I know it's not something everyone thinks about, but I start Pandora every workday at about 6am..
I'm getting ready for work, and the dawgs know.. but they listen to it all day.. (different genre's, low volume) :)
We hit shuffle on the songs in our Amazon library as soon as someone gets up.

Rick Beato is a solid musician in his own right. He has an opinion that many here share.

Let's be honest, folks - real musicians are a dying breed. I mean, c'mon, what are the prerequisites for being a "rapper" ?

This is where I show my age, I suppose. I grew up listening to guys and girls who honed their craft playing crappy bars. I have also done this, and it is a real struggle. But somewhere along the way, real magic happens. Think of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They had more "bar polish" than many of the acts they were opening for.

I adhere to the Louis Armstrong principle - if you like it, it's good. If you don't, it's bad. But with that said, there are far less musicians out there with real, honest to god polish from hours of trying to impress a room of drunks.

That's my opinion. Agree or disagree, I have as much a right to state it as the rest of you. Also, the usual finger-pointers and gatekeepers are in attendance, and I have to say, I'm about to call some of them out. Getting pretty fed up with it.

My definition is a person who can sit in a studio, listen to tracks, and come up with musical phrases that fit the mood and goal of the songwriter—not only meet the goal but indelibly add to the mix. Those have always been hard to find.

Me? I just cop a lot of stuff and mix them up. :)

I don't think so. It just the bar for entry is so low, anyone can make a song with a laptop. Same as with videos - tons of content on YT, but good stuff is still being made... well technically good, because I don't care for most Marvel/Disney stuff. I don't care for Mr. Beast either. But then you have something like 3Blue1Brown or Mustard. GenZ prefers watching amateur vids on YT or Tiktok, I guess they likewise have lo-fi taste for music. Lots of crap, but good stuff is still being made. Too bad the bigger the label, the crappier the "artist" they sign up. Let's recall what white suburban moms were saying about rock-n-roll 60 years ago. As long as no one fires nukes it is all good.

Western Music started going down hill with Bach and the well tempered (or even tempered) Clavier and 12 tone scale.
Before that it was Gregorian chants, various modes and all music based on melodic intervals... :)
Non western music is still inscrutable to me...
FWIW there were some chants that broke into the pop music charts a while ago.
I enjoy nearly all music, but there are clunkers in all genres. Enough dissembling and rambling. My 2 and a half cents.
