Wife Wants Big Speakers that Rock - Suggestions?

I thought she said she wanted BIG speakers to shake the house!

When mine said that, I made her these and never looked back!

Mach 1s, HPMs and L 100s are all nice speakers but not what many of us consider BIG house shakers.

Now we're shakin'. Thats my idea of big as well. Once you put an Altec VOTT type speaker in your home all others begin to look like they belong on a bookshelf. A7's get my vote YMMV. Just to be reasonable I'll also mention the HPM series immediately following the one containing the 100's. I like my HPM 900's and they don't seem to command as much money.

Ken,

What kinda music will you be listening too and how loud?

The basement is for rock & roll played loud (from Stooges to Faces to Zep). Think beer rather than Manhattans. I have the cocktail music covered upstairs (Art Pepper to Dean Martin to Chet Baker) w/ the small, accurate, uncoloured, and discreet B&Ws.

Lose the AR-9's and 90's from the list. Far too refined to be running with riff-raff.

And you better drop the Cornwalls, too. Unless you want to spend a lot more time in the basement.

I guess it depends on the wife, and on the furniture you have down there.

How 'bout a pair of ADS L-910s? There was a pair on eBay a little while ago. Big, heavy and wonderful. Rare, though. One of my very favorite vintage speakers.

If not, what about a pair of stacked Advents? Probably get 4 of these for the price of 2 L 100s. You would need a ton of power to get them shaking the house though.

Keep us posted.

Sounds like a perfect job for the HPM-100's !!!

But wait there's more.....

I'd suggest a set of JBL 4435s or a set of UREI 813s. These would have been found in the very studios where the mixes were done for all that 'old time rock 'n roll". Check the Lansing Heritage site for the details.

I've got a set of the 813s and they do, indeed rock out - the whole neighborhood, too.

BTW, did you know that the Audio Engineering Society will be inducting the UREI 813s into their Hall of Fame in early October? Cool....rock on.

Cheers,

David

Gotta love them Cerwins! I picked up a pair of LS 12's that really rock! I have even used them for DJ gigs, with no problems, as long as you keep the amp under the level that will blow the fuses in the Cerwins. Lots of clean hard hitting bass, didn't need a sub to help out with the sound in the hall! Waiting to go see delihaus and get the refoamed woofers for my CV-3000's!

I'd recommend a pair of Cerwin Vega D-9's (Owner/operator here) 85 lbs of pure "Audio-Muscle" and at 101db 1W1M, its amazing what they will do with only a 1/4w of input. I have JBL 4312's and RS Mach 2's, and while they are quite-quite good in that area, the D-9's have them beat... :thmbsp:

For the $$$$ I'd probably go with the HPM 100's or Polk monitor 10's. A pair of Klipsch KG4's would also be very loud. I wouldn't spend more than a couple hundred for the Pioneer's or the Klipsch's and less for the Polk's. If you want to spend 3-5 hundred or more, the possibilities increase. Brad

TIME TO START A FIRE!

Lets get real here, I just sold a nice pair of RS Mach ones. Granted they were a nice speaker and could get loud. I would rate them for good to shake a DORM ROOM. The only House they would shake is one a dog might live in.
Crank them with too much power and they blow, I KNOW!

I have also blown CVs with even less volume so I would avoid them.

The HPMs I can't comment on but lets face some facts here, to get a house shaking you better have some pretty large and heavy speakers or four not so large ones that can handle some watts and produce some serious SPLs.

My thought is if you can lift them by yourself and move them around the room then they can probably shake that room. If you want to shake the house then get speakers you need help moving or you will shake the speakers to death.

My Altec model 15s can shake the room and do it better then the Mach 1s ever thought of but the 19s can shake the house with ease. Very few smaller box speakers can move enough air to be shaking anything but themselves.
Yamaha NS 1000s at about 70 pounds each are about as small as I would go and consider for house shaking abilities.

OK, I will DUCK now but you'll have a long way to go to prove me wrong.

Right!
Look for big JBLs, big ALTECs OR
Maybe smaller models with BIG subwoofers, a pair if possible.

Half-assing it will not make you happy. You'll be wasting time and money. Take it from an old headbanger.

JBL L112 - more balanced sound than L100s
Klipsch Cornwall - have a good quality source or forget it.
Klipsch Forte - Excellent all around speaker but great rock speaker.
