Wildest animal you've been confronted with?

Haha I heard someone fiddling with my window one night and came creeping around with a pistol. I ended up backing a skunk into a corner. Sure, I had a .44, but when hr started stomping his feet, it was me that turned tail...

I had relatives from S. Philly and they visited us out in the suburbs one day and geese flew overhead and startled them. They were also afraid of the squirrels. And they told us that they were only use to hearing basketballs bouncing on the sidewalk.

. . . It was dark as coal with no moon but the stars were out so I turned off my headlamp and enjoyed the night sky. For some reason I looked ahead up the trail to see a pair of green glowing eyes about 30 feet away. The eyes were a good 4-6 inches apart so I figure it was either a wolf or a bear but I'll never know. I froze, whatever it was turned it's head from side to side because one eye would disappear then the other. Then Bob came up behind me with his headlamp on and the eyes were gone. I didn't tell him about it until a couple of hours later.

I had a similar view in da yooper. A group of friends were tent camping and sitting around the campfire. Everyone decided to turn in except me. I wanted to enjoy a bit of solitude so I turned off the Coleman lantern and sat next to the fading campfire.

After about thirty minutes it was plenty dark and my eyes adjusted. It was then that I saw a pair of glowing eyes staring at me from the other side of the campfire. They also had about 4-6 inches of spacing and appeared to be hunkered down like a stalking bear. I was scared. There was a bit 6 D Cell MagLite laying on the ground next to my seat but I was afraid to reach for it thinking that my movement might startle the beast. The stare down went on for another five minutes or so and finally I had to do something.

I slowly reached down and picked up the MagLite. Then I held it with both hands near the lens like a baseball bat, pointed the light at the eyes, and switched it on. The eyes were a pair of flowers reflecting the campfire glow. :D

LOL.. that sounds like some nights I've had sitting around a camp fire, but I think there were other reasons I was seeing things like that... :smoke:

Just be glad it wasn't 3000 skunks. :D Congrats. :thmbsp:

A Dachshund. It was terrible. The dachshund chased me, I run and run and run and finally jumped crying on a table. That was my rescue. I was four years old.

:sigh:

:D

I lived in Yellowstone for 6 months or so. I came across a few grizzly bears, but never close to enough to be in fear of my life too badly. I did have my bear spray ready to fire, but they never approached me.

The scariest was when I was mushroom hunting and scared a black bear cub up a tree. He made a lot of noise and knocked a ton of bark off the tree on his way up. My friend and I quickly walked (trying to find the medium between a hurried walk and a run) toward the road looking straight forward. We made it to the road and took off running. I never saw the mom, but as they say, she wasn't too far away. She had to be aware of the cub being startled. Phew.

Here's another...

I was on a hike by Yellowstone Lake and ran into a bison (the deadliest animal in the park for visitors) and thought I needed a really great photo of it. I got closer and snapped a shot. Got a little closer and snapped another. Got even closer and then he turned toward me, snorted, stomped his foot, and I ran as fast as I possibly could, weaving in and out of the trees. The next photo was a shot of my terrified face that I sent to my mother with a note that said "I Love You".

ha... Wildschweine (boars) are common unwelcome guests in Berlins suburb gardens :) better leave them alone until they finished their job ;)

You'all obviously haven't met my wife when she is annoyed (affectionately known as the Dragon). I'm seriously thinking of getting her to do debt collecting for our company.

I could go out to the detached shop/garage out back and catch at least a dozen brown recluses inside of five minutes.

Somehow I get the feeling that ole Mama bear knew you weren't very dangerous. She probably sensed that you were about as scared as her baby, and laughed at both of you. :D ;)

Easy. Water Moccasin 18" from my face sunning itself on a rock ledge of my favorite swimming hole. He was startled as I was climbing up the rock face on a hot day after jumping in. I don't know who was more scared he or I but he hesitated and I didn't.

I was once attacked by an armadillo.

I was conducting a wildlife habitat survey on Cossatot River State Park a few years ago. Entertainment consisted of tossing rocks near armadillos and watching them jump. Every time I squated down to rummaged through the leaves looking for another rock, this one armadillo would run a few yards toward me. After a few rounds, the armadillo was about 6 feet from me. Went looking for another rock and the armadillo charged me and jumped into my lap. Not sure what the armadillo had in mind.

In middle school, while fishing in TX, I was walking up a trail and happend to look down and right next to my foot was a diamondback. Luckily he didnt seem to bothered with me there.

There was one morning I had the garage open and was warming the car up to head to work. Come back out to find a Rottweiler laying down between the cars. He didnt like me disturbing his nap.

Then there was this guy. Came down the fireplace while the wife and I were in bed. Thought somebody was trying to break in. This made for an interesting night.

Most of my wild animal encounters happened up in the Bruce Peninsula. Up there I've seen black bears and rattler snakes. Saw black bears near various garbage bins and found rattlers while fishing mostly. On one trip, I almost stepped on a mating ball!!! That was a terrifying experience.

Closer to home the wildest thing I've run into was a possum that I thought was a stray cat. Approached it saying "hey kitty kitty kitty" and then it turned its face towards me and hissed, and I knew it was no kitty!

Last night took a drive up to dump road just outside of buck horn ontario, saw 9 black bears playing around in the dumpsters, they didn't pay attention to us, just kinda walked around going from dumpster to dumpster.
