Windham Hill Music PlayList -

Anyone else activly looking for WH releases? I crused around on Discogs and the bay yesterday and was pretty shocked by the prices of some releases. Some even over $20 & that's for a CD. Lots of them weren't near that much but many were. I guess they could be getting rare, I never see any at used record shops. I bought a Turtle Island CD from the bay for $7 and change shipped, all the other copies were in the teens and 20's.
At my local Amoeba in SF, almost all the WH catalog can be picked for about one dollar to five, many in mint condition. Audiophile record fans have let this treasure trove slip by.

I was an early adopter of Alex DeGrassi Slow Circle. And then in the early 80’s Michael Hedges came to the law school auditorium in Nashville which caught the ears of many a country guitarist. I wish there were some more live albums of him; he set a very high bar for acoustic guitarists. Sadly missed.

Michael Hedges. At some point early on Windham Hill had done a show on PBS. I'd muddled my way around fingerstyle guitar for years and watching the show I was totally impressed with Ackerman and DeGrasse. They introduced the next guy on deck and a dreadlocked, white guy with a Martin walked out on stage. Definitely an interesting look but once he started playing it was jaw dropping. I'd never heard anything like it and watching how he was doing it was even more WTF. It reminded me of the 1st time I'd heard Hendrix or EVH in that it was something totally, totally different.

Years later I heard him tell the story of getting on an elevator that Steve Howe was on. Hedges was carrying a vintage harp guitar in a case and they chatted about the instrument. Getting off the same floor, Hedges set the case on the floor and took out the harp to show Howe. He said he ran through about 40 seconds of something or other on it. Howe smiled and as he was walking away he turned to a guy he was with and said, "That guy was fing amazing!".

Sadly, gone much too soon.

I did a search and didn’t see any recent threads for Windham Hill music. I think they were a label and genre which deserves more respect here so thought I’d start a playlist thread. I know that some may blow the label off as elevator music or simply “new age” - but it’s almost always very well performed acoustic music which was well recorded and engineered, and always very well pressed and packaged when on vinyl. These are high quality records.

Please feel free to post pictures, thoughts or recommendations of any Windham Hill albums you’re playing, either on vinyl or CD.

I’ll start off with posting of one I played an hour ago, by Alex DeGrassi -

I like elevator music and new age and Windham Hill.

I dug into my box of CDs and forgot how many of the WH Cds I had! Every Sampler, a local radio station sampler, even my very first WH CD- First Light from William Ackerman. Some folks may not get it- but the music was well thought-out and nothing beats this for relaxation.

WH must have had unusual record deals with the artists because I can't think of another label that put out so many samplers of verious artist. They also had the seasonal releases and samplers from different years as well as the guitar & piano samplers. I think I might have even missed some!

I even bought some Japan only WH comp vinyl releases that are quite lovely.

Any of you have releases from the other WH labels? High Street, WH Jazz and I think there were more. I have several on the Jazz label.
It's funny but don't believe I've ever noticed those other Windham Hill labels, and I have several thousand CDs. I'll have to look for them now!
