Windham Hill Music PlayList -

Just giving this thread a bump. I have hit some used record shops this summer and bought up everything they had from the WH label that I didn't already have, about a dozen CD's. Prices were better than buying from the internet (4 for 10) + no shipping. I would say most shops are happy to sell off the stock for what they can get. It also looks like there isn't that much stock in the wild.

Read a great story about Liz Story (who else?). Classically trained on the piano, she knew nothing about jazz improvisation. Her brother bugged her to check out the late great Bill Evans, so she went to watch him play at a NYC jazz club, Needless to say, she was thoroughly surprised by Evans’ playing without any on-stage sheet music. She immediately asked Bill to mentor her and give her piano lessons. He declined, but recommended learning from another legend, Sanford Gold. The rest, as they say, is history.

That's a good one.

I recall another good story about Story. I looked it up to make sure I got it right:

"She took a job playing piano at a French restaurant, but the piano lacked a stand for holding up sheet music, so she was compelled to improvise. She sent some tapes of her work to William Ackerman of Windham Hill Records, and he signed her to the label."

Some more on Liz Story. She had a bilateral subdural hematoma (brain hemorrhage) in 2019, which affected her ability to play. This sidelined her from the stage for three years as she had to relearn how to play piano.
