Windows 7 in 2016 - Bad Idea?

All the telemetry, forced automatic updates, and backhanded keyloggers in Windows 10, are so invasive that I solved my problem. KT is 100% Linux. Bill Gates and company just got my 3 fingered Salute. Kubuntu, I love thee.

I'm a mac fan, but I try and keep a current copy of Windows on my machine via VMWare Fusion ... (Only run when I start it up, and gets closed within an hour)

But - I had such a mess trying to keep Win 7 Prof available on my system. It was a legal DVD copy, Redmond holygram and all of that -
but it failed at some point and going through re-auth worked once, and can't get re-authed again.
Too much of a pain to try reauth every time I don't run it for a few months!
I'm not likely to buy Win 8.1 Prof,
and certainly don't need Win 10 ...
Got the latest greatest OSX El Capitan (free upgrade from Apple), a 2009 MacPro tower with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 12 GB memory ... and too many drives!
The darned thing is plenty powerful for win but I am not going to fight and struggle to keep a legal copy turned on ...

I'm not a computer / OS expert but I don't think I've ever had an OS that right out of the box got on wrong side of me and thereafter was a determined stubborn adversary. Like I said before - the best thing about Windows 10 is researching how to give it a beatdown.

Great post, a classic!

This is classic. Blame MS for spying/tracking while using the Internet. LOL.
Its not so much about spying/tracking as Redmond collecting LOCAL PC data and using it.

Also its a FAR different animal to search a hard drive looking for tracking data than just simple tracking that occurs when you go to a site.

Its not like Audiokarma can reach into your PC and extract un-related data and use it.

I suppose people don't get the difference.

No doubt only the truly enlightened understand it.
Its not that. Just understand that most people don't know how to turn off all this telemetry. I truly worry that what seems Benevolent today may not be tomorrow.

And while some of you may think IT professionals like myself are Idiots because we are cautious with data its not to get in the way or control your web experience.

Its to safeguard as much as possible people.

At no time did I say no one should use Windows 10.

I am just saying like anything be wary of what comes to you under the guise of free , shiny and new.

Its the same social engineering that hackers use with great success to lure people into installing malware.

I don't in any way envision you as an idiot. Some other things on occasion maybe, but not an idiot.

Hiya,

Last thing about IT professionals being wary of Win 10.

Win Xp to Vista = 5 Years And A Half

Vista to Win 7 = 1 Year And A Half

Win 7 to Win 8 = 3 Years

Win 8 to Win 10 = 2 Years And A Half

Now each of these transitions were about fixing issues with the previous version. Each transition the User Interface changed dramatically and in some cases required complete overhaul of a PC.

Now try and be that IT professional who is faced with dealing with the difference lets say between Win 7 and Win 10 and deploying that in a stable fashion to 1000's of machines within a enterprise.

Then deal with all the user complaints about lost Icon's , applications working poorly and what not.

Then deal with Users reading stuff like this thread and all that push back all day.

Then perhaps you would sort of understand the hell being a IT professional is these days.

Yep idiots for even sticking with it.

Just look at the gnashing and what not over this site upgrade.

I'm a lot of things but a hypocrite isn't one of them.

our self image is never a mirror reflection but my post was not meant critical nor combative, it was meant in humor

I hold no grudges, especially on something as trite as something said on a message board.

peace out brother

One thing that I don't understand, is the discrepancy in anger and rage between the perceived tracking and privacy violations in Windows 10, and the even worse tracking and privacy violations that have occurred on phones for years.

Consider Apple and Google, doing everything they can to monetize your data and use it for their purposes. Not only does no one seem to care, but people line up every time there is a new phone, eager to spend their money. It would certainly appear that the market has spoken, and people have voted on this issue using their wallets. It seems perfectly reasonable for other companies to follow in their footsteps at that point.

My intent is not to comment on what level of tracking is acceptable or not, but rather, the lack of consistency. Why is it okay when Apple or Google tracks you, but When it comes to Microsoft, everyone freaks out?

Its not OK in any form without permission given and certainly Google , Apple and others are guilty as hell of this.

What bothers people I feel about Microsoft is that they dominate the market and are everywhere.

And they have had issues with the past with things like DRM and other things that are an affront to a certain segment of our population.

Great post, a classic!

BTW off topic - I never did thank you for the "don't get Queen" thread. That belongs in the Hall Of Fame. The only reason I started the "don't get Talking Heads" thread was to draw fire away from you. Good times. OK - over and out.
