Words to live by

Maybe ours is just to go forth and multiply ourselves - but not quite in those words ;)
Go forth, but first buy a fifth.

I like to try to go back before WORDS took over our minds. To try to perceive without the use of words. Afterall, words are made up symbols (shorthand) that are not possible to be precise. Humans today, start too often with naming everything. The names are not full, not complete explanations for any phenomenon.

In our little audio hobby world you can see all the time how words get in the way, and how ineffectual they are when applied to the sound of music reproduced. It's a "modern-human" trait to first reach for words, symbols, names. We first have an internal perception which arrives without words - then we want to share the perception, so the only thing we can do is transcribe it into the best words we can think of.

So, "words to live by" pretty much suffers the problem that a WORD can carry very different implications to different people. If you have ever heard 3 preachers argue over the meaning of a few words in their Holy Book, you know what I mean.

The whole is more than the sum of the parts. Thinking with out words is akin to meditation and can be developed as a skill set though seldom described as such. It's hard to put words to :).

My old baseball coach's adage, "If you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything. Even if you have something good to say, don't say it."

I'm sure I"m going too far afield here, but...........

Most of the troubles among people involve WORDS. I ran into a good example this am while reading the APNews. A person I respect was referred to as "Jane Doe, a conspiracy theorist, and author......" blah, blah, blah. WOW, I thought...this coming from the AP? Not that I had much respect for them in the past, but this was really over the top to be expressed in a straight news story.

Of course, the Press, much like the Church, are masters at firing words at their audiences.

These days, it's all about "clicks and likes" journalism. News in 15-second TikTok bits.

Thinking without words enables us to channel our basic instincts. So far, that seems to be a VERY bad idea. By so far, I mean as long as man has been in existence. Words allow us to express concepts and emotions far more specifically and more complex than simple actions can ever express. It's what separates us from non-verbal creatures, and should be celebrated and exercised. Without words, we have fight, flight, and self-gratification (meaning relaxation, ease, or enjoyment of outside stimulae of some kind, be it art or other form of sensual pleasure.. music, scenery, beauty, ego-gratification, whatever). That's about it.

On the other hand, I am much more connected to my dogs than I am the vast majority of humans. My dogs never lie to me, always express with absolute honesty what they are currently experiencing (except pain and discomfort...they hide that, as it's a sign of weakness in their world and weakness is not tolerated), and appreciate every kindness.

If we had the soul of dogs, I'd agree that words get in the way. We don't. As a species, we, unfortunately, are naturally wired to treat each other poorly for our own individual advancement. Words are what save us from ourselves... or doom us. Failure to embrace and master the use of words as a method of thoughtful and compassionate communication is tantamount to accepting our naturally malevolent nature.

"In the beginning was the Word...." ... John 1:1

Good points you make there! In a society such as we have built - the only currency is WORDS. It is a society built by words, for words.

But, language is new to Homo Sapiens, and we once got along just fine without it - for over a million years! Proto-language developed about 300,000 years ago.

Now, maybe we can't even imagine that existence, but as a reminder, there is your dog, or a family of beavers, or bears. We often forget that "we are just a species in the family of animals."

I wouldn't recommend trying to live today without words. But the challenge, "WORDS TO LIVE BY" is precarious, knowing what we know about the interpretation of words. My suggestion is that to find the "essence of life" which might have been the original point, you can also just interrogate your soul, and your consciousness DIRECTLY without names, words, or prefab ideas from books or wordsmiths.

Have a swell evening, amigos!
