Worried about my Audiophile status - full range speaker love

I now have 3 tri-ax and two "twin tone" full range driver speakers

I also have some expensive conventional speakers - but these old full range units just seem to get me - so satisfying.

Latest antique is this pair of Goodman's Axiom 301. I have read some put tweeters with them. I don't know they sound so good already.

Perhaps I need some intervention.

We like... what we like. It makes us who we are.

This is exactly why I rile at the term "audiophile".

You can always find something that sounds better, at least at first*. It's what sounds best over an extended period is the on that I would choose to live with.

* "Change" is not necessarily better, just different. Different always sounds better at first but time can change that.
Thats (partially) why most of us don’t have just one system, or at least rotate components in and out periodically. There’s a reason truisms are truisms, like ‘variety is the spice of life’

There is no such thing as a perfect speaker. PERIOD.

All are compromises.

I have used single full range drivers - for vocals nice, the rest not so much.
Also true … pretty much in almost anything, no perfection, just a series of intelligent compromises.

FWIW, I tried some single drivers quite some time ago … and I will say that is one of the very very few times my wife took notice of the audio system and commented favorably. The intimacy and emotion in the vocal presentation was special.
(Thanks and RIP Terry Cain)

You say you've had 3 pair of full range speakers that did nice vocals but not much else. It doesn't make sense that you kept buying or building them after such a low opinion. Few people on this forum have ever heard full range single drivers much less owned 3 pair. Very few companies sell them and most examples are DIY so again lets see pictures of your full range speakers.

Actually, it seems to me that a fair number of AKers have used full range drivers. I think many of them have more mixed feelings about them than you do - tastes differ and most seem to appreciate them in certain contexts but not as their only speakers.

I'm immediately drawn to threads about FRSD and could have missed some but other than mhardy's and wsissons I've only seen a few desk top versions. You seem to be speaking for others so what has been your experience with full range single drivers?

I think some people here may be confused about what constitutes a full range speaker. It's a single driver, not multiples that attempts to reproduce as much of the frequency spectrum as possible. There is of course a compromise as no single driver can cover the full frequency spectrum. The term wide band is a better descriptor.

I've toyed with the idea of making new baffles and swapping the F15 in where I am running Fast10's now, but it would be more to see how they are different, and a lot of work.

The guy says he tried them a few times and didn't care for them, that's that. You're acting as if he's in bad faith or if a person doesn't like them something must be wrong.

I used single drivers several times too, starting back in the 1970s. I used Jensen, Altec, EV, Fostex and Tang Band, among others. And I heard a LOT of single driver systems, including several Lowther systems and even field coil Supravoxes. And they're not for me. Except electrostats, I dig Sound Labs and old Acoustats. And the Martin Logans I owned which were hybrids---only 400hz on up was handled by the electrostatic driver.

Recently got this pair of what look like diy boxes with Lafayette SK-98 8 inchers (really Pioneer's I think). Removed the backs of the boxes and having fun listening with my MC30 amps. Seemed like an appropriate thread to choose for this. They actually are pretty even handed with decent treble and a semblance of bass enough so that it works in my moderate size room.
