Worst singers

Mrs Miller was somewhat of a sad character, IMHO. She was, by all accounts, a very friendly & gentle soul, kind to all, but utterly CLUELESS to how awful she really was-and how her whole "career" was really nothing more than an extended joke. There's something REALLY BAD to me about using little old ladies like that... Maybe I'm old-fashioned, though.

Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips should be mentioned in this thread on account of his signature rough wavering falcetto. I think he would even admit he has a terrible voice. That doesn't stop me from being a huge fan of their music though. :dunno:

I think quality of voice/singing "talent" are often over rated. How can so many people with great voices be so...boring?

Agree with Brent a...

...there's a great gulf between having great physical or technical vocal abilities and being able to put over a song despite vocal inadequacies :

I.E.
Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion - abilities overshadowed by melismata overload, fake emotion, lame material - "The Screamers".

Alanis Morrisette - good pipes but that little vocal 'gasp' trick she does is starting to ruin her good songs for me.

Aaron Neville - I know it's your 'signature' but please lose the exaggerated tremelo and just sing it straight.

contrasted with:
Ricki Lee Jones - idiosyncratic to the max, but who else could do her songs justice?

Dylan, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Beefheart, Cohen - 'cursed' with voices that are flawed: nasal or whiny or no range or off-key or whatever, their songs are still powerful and effective and still satisfying and influential.

...just my 2 cents (I can't play bass and sing backup at the same time to save my life and no one would want me to anyway).

Ray Davies of the Kinks. And I LIKE some of their stuff, but I don't know who decided "'Ere, let's let Ray 'ave a go at it...Oooh, 'You Really Got Me', well done, lad."

Richard Marx. Celine Dion. And if he did sing Kenny G!
Since when are Rock Singers supposed to be able to sing?

philliam,
Well said.
If you want to hear one of the worst "mannered",over-affected vocal styles.
Seek-out a listen to Joanna Newsom.

You guys ever heard Avril Lavigne? Wow that's some outta tune horrible singing, definitely some of the flattest singing I've heard.

Hmm...........

My top 10:
1) james Blunt. I swear that I will destroy whatever is playing him next time I hear it.
2) Tiny Tim
3) John Mayer
4) Michael Bolton
5) Scott Stapp
6) Geddy Lee (Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Rush, but damn......)
7) The original AC/DC "singer"
8) the new(er) AC/DC "singer"
9) janis Joplin (again, love her, but she cannot sing....)
10) Ozzy after Black Sabbath

james blunt has a great voice and has some great music, rush is nothing without Geddy lee (who was given the order of canada), original singers of ac/dc? get a grip, and janis and ozzy paved the way for whatever crap singers your into..............:tresbon:

James Blunt already has one of the most damning punishments, that Providence could dish-out.
His voice.
