Are a piar of ESS Heil AMT-1 worth around 200 bucks?? They are in great condition.

I never heard them before but have read great reviews.

The Heil tweeters are worth more than that by themselves. So the answer is yes. They are great sounding speakers. I use a pair in my bedroom.

Wow...those must be some tweeters.

Here is what he said about the units....

"These aren't the simple ported or passive radiator models, these are the FULL transmission line loaded units. They are improved with better capacitors, specially treated woofer cones which are as fast and as clean as the Heils themselves, and they have the updated crossovers with adjustments for presence and brightness which the earlier versions lacked. "

Those would be similar to the "Rock Monitors". They should have a set of letters/numbers after the AMT1 but can't remember off hand the exact letter/number combination.

I've owned mine since 1976. Heils never lack in presence & brightness. But the AMT 1 do lack in lower mid & bass. The Heil always dominate. But are they worthy of $200.

AMT 1 on the left. AMT 3 Rock Monitor on the right.

I'm moving the Heils to the big guys from the little guys.

AMT 1 - 1 - 10" woofer. AMT 3 - 2 - 10" woofers and a 6" mid.

Actually when i first saw them i thought of you because i know you always talk about them :music:

Would you recommend running with a sub?

This can be a whole thread in a different forum but I feel like subs really should only be used for electrostatics and HT. Although I do run my PSB's with a Klispch subwoofer and they are a perfect balance but I bought the gear knowing I wanted to pair great highs and mids with a sub handling all the bass.

There was another AMT1 model that looks like your Rock Monitor but didn't use a midrange. It used a single 10" mid and passive along with the Heil tweeter. I just saw it on Ebay but can't seem to find it. See my previous post.

Yes a sub would be real nice. :thmbsp:

I think i just posted a pic of what you are talking about.

This is frustrating that I can't find the listing. It wasn't either of the ones in the brochure or the picture you posted. I don't believe it was ported as it had a 10" woofer and 10" passive. It was also a two way. Designation was AMT1** or AMT1*** but I can't remember what it was. It didn't have the Monitor or Tower name after the model number.

Oh well. Thanks for posting the pictures of the brochures. I didn't realize the tower was a tl.

Those are the ones! Thanks. I thought I was loosing my mind. I think a lot of people get the model numbers mixed up as they are so similar.

Someone should make a list of all the different model numbers. I was given a owners manual for my AMT1's and a brochure for the Monitors when I bought mine.

The AMT 1 Tower uses transmission line loading. It's specs suggest it might be fine without a sub.

They are the towers....but someone else offered him more so I didn't get them but still am interested in knowing more about them because I know one day i will have a pair.

Well then it's probably the AMT-1b (lower case "b" = bookshelf. The Heil is actually in the bass box instead of on top like most you see. I have a pair since new in the 70's, my first set of speakers.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Bob
