This sucks!

It's my turn to be the IT guy on call this week. BAD TIMING..

So anyway, I get an e-mail from a user that says they managed to load up the Citrix client on their computer THIS MORNING, but couldn't get a program within it to work.... (First time they have accessed our system from outside the office) Then my boss sends them an e-mail saying they can call the 24 hour number to get it fixed today if they want. (means I will have to work if they do...)

WTF?!?!??! It's THANKSGIVING damn it.. Get a life and go cook some turkey.... or get laid..... or something....

What the hell is wrong with people? Our society needs to learn to live a little instead of devoting our lives to work work work...

Hope this doesn't come off too harsh, but here goes.

FIRST
You should be THANKFUL you have a job, with so many people unemployed, more and more losing their jobs daily with the current economic crisis.

SECOND
What's wrong with Hard Work? It's what made our country great, it's that can do spirit and attitude to do whatever it takes that got us to where we are today and allowed you to have the freedoms and wealth you enjoy.

GREED, PROFIT TAKING,LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY and SHORT CUTS, have become the American way latley and are responsible for our current situation.

As someone who's been around forever and worked long hard days my whole life and continue to do so, I find that the younger generation though smarter, more worldly, techincally gifted, and more self aware at an earlier age than my generation, most are not willingly to put in the time, effort, or commitment to be successful. They're looking for the quick score or get rich scheme. In life that only happens for a lucky few. Most millionaires get there through hard work and calculated risk taking.

I've been on 24-hour call (with a couple of single-day exceptions) since May of this year. It's no end of fun walking an idiot through reprogramming their router at 2-A.M. because they forgot their WEP key and reset the damn thing (we statically assign NAT addresses), or getting a call right as I'm sitting down to dinner from someone who forgot their email password, and they're not at home, and they didn't even know they had a password ("I've never had to use one before" is a common retort), and they just bought something on line and absolutely need the confirmation email then and there.

That said, I am theoretically off today, and do not even plan at looking at Nagios. However, I am on-duty through the Christmas holiday season. Ah! The blessings of being the only single male without child in the office!
 
OK.. yes, you are right. I am VERY thankful I do have job, which I really enjoy, and does pay well. I was probably sounding a little wrong the way I said it...

BUT... There is no mission critical reason a person should be working today, especially a staff member. I talked to some of the attorneys yesterday and all of them said they weren't going to be doing any work today. THey are the ones that do the billing. Not a staff member. No reason she should be working other than the fact she is way too dedicated..

I've worked many years for way too little way to hard, and I am lucky as hell I have gotten to where I am today. Just kinda sucks others don't have enough consideration about having others work on a paid holiday because they have no life evidently.
 
Holidays and Weekends.

In the IT world, this just comes with the territory. I'm used to it.

I was on the verge of bitching about it last weekend when my pager went off at 11:00pm. Then I remembered that at this time last year, I was unemployed.

I do understand the frustration though. Those calls usually come at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon when quittin' time is 5:00.

Damn, that's harsh, James.

You're on call. My "son-in-law" is always on call. He responds to train derailments to clean up the mess and move cars. If he's putting the first bite of dressing in his mouth and gets a call of a derailment, he has to go, and he gets triple time if it happens today, being a holiday and all.

Get over it.

I used to be on call 24.7 365 in the apartment industry and the 3 am toilet won't flush or overflows were the pits but it paid good. I would love to be on call now, that would mean I was not layed off.
 
OK OK... I get it.. but I guess unless you are on the other side of the coin it's hard to understand...

I understand being on call for backed up toilets or faulty heaters. I used to work as the on call base maintenance, and also the same for several apartment complexes. Those things happen, and they have to be taken care of then. I never complained about those calls. It was my job, and they had a true problem. The same with the person on call for train derailments. All serious issues.

What gets my goat about this is, It's a paid holiday, and there is no need to be working. The person working will get no extra pay for working because it is a firm holiday, and there is no reason any person in the firm should be working other than myself, or the IT engineer. Reasons such as an exchange crash, or similar. Mail still has to be able to make it into the firm even if no one is reading it.

If a person just feels the need to HAVE to work, then so be it, but if it was me, and I had a problem, I would say OH well, and wait until tomorrow to contact the IT department. I could never feel right pulling a person from their holiday especially not knowing if they are with family or what on a paid holiday that the firm tells u there is no need to be working....

I guess since I think about what others are doing with their holiday, I could never feel self centered enough to pull someone else away from their special day just because I have nothing else to do other than work. Believe me. This person has no need to be working other than they must be bored.

I feel for them if that is the case, and would invite them over for dinner since they must not be with, or have family, but they live about 4 hours away and are in the main office.

I guess consideration is my main point.. not so much having to work...

I guess I'm just a little pissed about what's been happening in our country lately, Ive lost more money in my 401k in the last 2 months than I've made in the last 2 years. I own rental property all over Chicago and I've got serious cash flow issues with renters behind with the rent, not to mention the fact that the properties have lost a big chunk of their value. Thank God I don't own property in California.

I'm on my second beer, one more and I settle down.

I think I'll get myself a little something to drink too and realize others see things differently, even if they are inconsiderate of other's holiday plans. Even the attorneys don't bother the staff on the big holidays.
 
Hey, today is one of these "special" days of the year that are about family. These days are far too few.

I happen to empathise completely with Simi; if it ain't mission critical, then it can wait. Hats off to those who are emergency responders, the military, and all those who work today. I know my wife, kid, and I will be going over to the VA hospital where she works to provide some company to the vets on her ward who don't have relatives in town visiting.

Actually, some times I LIKED to go in Thanksgivings, Christmases, New Years, etc, because no one else was there, & I could get a lot of stuff done that I couldn't otherwise. I didn't do this ALL the time, but every now & then, I would.
 
Got to be a pain in the butt gettin that "on call" page. I mean it's not like AK went down or anything. Now that would constitute an emergency.:D

I work in retail and I gotta agree. I regularily disparage retailers open on holidays, and more so the inconsiderate louts who are too damn lazy to buy gas, food, beer, wine, batteries, etc BEFORE the holiday.

Kudos to any and all retailers and service folks that are considerate enough of their help to close on the holidays.

And screw you KMart for being open today :yes:

I can understand that completely too, but would you call someone if something wasn't working and only you would be benefiting from bothering them?
