In the 10 years prior to my retirement (not by choice BTW) I worked 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. I got 5 days off a year whether I wanted them or not... I'd be lying to say that I enjoyed every day of it, or that I didn't resent the times when I would get called in on a Sunday or a holiday to help a customer who had neglected to plan ahead.
What I will say is that every day since I became unable to do my job, I have missed it. A job is much more than a way to make a living. It gives purpose to life, and challenges to overcome. It is in large part how we determine our worth, and I speak from experience when I say that there is very little worse than feeling worthless, and valueless.
I encourage you to enjoy your job. To do every task with honor: Like a carpenter building a house for himself, not like a workman earning a wage. Why? So that at the end of the day, you can go to your own home justified.

Kinda selfish...I'll bet there are a quite a few thousand men and women in the US armedforces that would like to be with there familys as well..Protecting your right to bellyache about a little inconvenience.At least you don't have to worry about someone detonating a car bomb or shooting at you.

So true Avionic. Many years while I was busy being a military brat, my father would invite the single GI's over that he worked with for Thanksgiving dinner, or to spend Christmas day with us, and a gift for them under the tree... Because of those people I have learned a lot about compassion, and doing a job you signed up to do... I do miss sharing with others that wern't so lucky as my family was, and weren't able to be stationed with the rest of their family...
I'm not trying to be ungrateful at all, and I sure didn't mean to sound that way. I love my job, and take great pride in the service and product I provide. I guess I should feel more for this girl that seems to have nothing better to do than work on a paid holiday, but I just don't understand people that don't think about others... OR.. who knows, maybe it was her way of looking for attention...

after being in customer service for nearly 30 years, i shouldnt have to tell anyone how to deal with the handful of inconsiderate a-holes that can find the emergency afterhours numbers. you deal with them by phone. you have them check this, try that, while you eat dinner, diaper the kids..all the lil things that happen on holidays.. of course if there is a legitimate emergency you have to bite the bullet..but thats a judgement call on each individual case.

She will not get paid extra for working today. She get's the same holiday pay everyone else gets, because she is not required to work. They will not pay OT for a firm holiday if not required to work. No one is required to work other than the on call person, and the network engineer. If I do take a call and work, I will get paid extra, but the person working won't be since it is not required.

I apologize.
You addressed this in your second post, and I missed it.
The point I was trying to make is that some people are required to work regardless of government mandated "holidays", and deserve consideration for what they do. (I'm working today, too.)
This is obviously not the case, and I see your point. Unfortunately these days, many people aren't raised to respect the rights and wishes of others. Kinda numbing, isn't it?
Again, I apologize.
I don't think anyone here doesn't respect and sympathize with those who are away from their families today because of their duty to critical functions. The men and women in the Armed Service, fire, police, medical and necessary, critical operations certainly do deserve our plentiful thanks at the table today for their sacrifices, past, present and future. :thmbsp:
My issue is with those NON critical, service functions that are unnecessarily open that tear families apart on these holidays. If you're an owner and YOU choose to be open and run your business, that's fine by me. But if you choose to be open, take the day off, and force the staff to spoil their holiday, well, I hope you don't sell a damn thing...

No deal bentpencil. I'm sorry you have to work today, when a lot of others don't. I do appreciate greatly all the people that do have to work to keep us safe, or our water and power running and other such things..... People I am thankful for....
I should be thankful this girl works for the firm. Her needing help is what keeps me employed, but needinng it today isn't required is what was chapping me...
I'm over it now, and don't want people thinking I'm acting spoiled myself, but I work hard all the rest of the time, and when the company tells me it's my day unless it's an emergency, I really want my day, and don't want to have to deal with butt kissers that only care how good it makes them look..
However, I have a feeling her boss will ask her why she was working. It's the one thing the firm I work for is really great about. Letting us have our time and trying to keep us from over extending ourselves. They don't like us working overtime unless really needed. It's not about the money, it's they don't want people being burnt out. It really is a pretty close knit place to work.

Many good points have been made here by many good posters. IMHO people do need to take time to appreciate life - and especially today, give thanks. If we give up all our special days to work, nothing good will come of it.

Done my faie share of 24 hour on-calls but it was usually for a reason, like a major alarm in a switching centre, not some twit trying to impress the boss. Hell, on one it was winter and snowing, hit a white out by the Richelieu River where I could not even see the hood ornament. Twenty-five foot drop to the river on my right and a three foot ditch on my left. I knew no one else was stupid enough to be out in that so I went to the middle of the road. Would I do it all again? Not bloody likely.
Maybe a little harsh..I can't remember how many holidays I had to work while on active duty,without compensation.I'm sure the OP is gettting well compensated for the holiday OT.
And I probably should have read through all the posts ,so I will apologize for that oversite.
As far as mission critical. To the OP it may not be.But to the customer with a problem it may be the difference of having a job or not.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving..Start the diet next Monday.

Lucky you. Many of us in IT roles do not see "extra" pay for extra hours, holiday or otherwise. The bottom line that I learned many years ago as a salaried employee...overtime doesn't pay.

No, I read it all....
I've worked in Retail my whole Career. And I understood from the start that more than likely, I'd be working before, through, and after each and every holiday. Although I may hate it, I accept it and don't complain about it.
Ironically enough, we use Citrix at work too.....
