WTF People... GET A LIFE!!!

Hey, if you can't complain to your AK buddies, life's hardly worth living. Bring it on! And have a slice of pie. Deep dish apple is what I got here. I think there's some punkin left in the kitchen.

I too work IT and am off wed, thurs, friday as a paid holiday...was called in twice (could'a been three) yesterday for issues that fit the same general theme as yours; way I see it is since I Already am making my hourly wage and I get 2 hours billable per call in, I got paid 2 1/2 times my hourly wage for four hours yesterday(overtime).
WHEN they call me on friday, I will happily go tend to their needs and enjoy my vacation at the same time (being a union job I get two hours for a call in even if i'm only there for 2 minutes to resolve an issue)
While this may, or may not be different from the conditons of your employment situation; I knew the terms and implications of the type of job I work when I started, full well knowing that there are drawbacks AND PERKS related to the job field of IT.
My Blackberry can go off at anytime any day with work that "needs" be tended to; I still remember the days when I thought the BB was a neat piece of technology but now,... it's just a multi pronged workload dispatch unit :-)
Anyways IMO it just goes with the territory of this type of job.

Jeez la Freakin' Wheeze..... If Simi had said "I have been working my ass off and was trying to enjoy a bit of time with the family but something came up and I had to run in to work." If he didn't give any details, I bet most of you would say "Hurry back and eat some bird, dude. Sucks you gotta work today."

He wasn't saying he was lazy, hated his job or wasn't hard working or even ungratefull he had a job. He definetely wasn't saying he wasn't greatfull for the Men and Women who are protecting us instead of eating Turkey.

The point was there are times that a guy can spend with the family without any guilt about work needing to be done. A paid Holiday is one.

I didn't read the whle thread, but yeah. I agree with you. We don't put enough emphasis on life. It's not just work. And this whole approach to business like it's more important than anything else in the world is wrong in my opinion.

This is a national holiday and it is historically a day when people spend time with their families and give thanks. I'm thankful to have a job (and this is the first Thansgiving I've had off in over a dozen years) but my job is NOT the most important thing in my life. My family is. And I think it's lame that I would never say that out loud at work for fear that people would look at me like I'm from Mars. Our priorities are wacko. People, family and loved ones are what it's all about.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone,

Ed

This sucks!

It's my turn to be the IT guy on call this week. BAD TIMING..

So anyway, I get an e-mail from a user that says they managed to load up the Citrix client on their computer THIS MORNING, but couldn't get a program within it to work.... (First time they have accessed our system from outside the office) Then my boss sends them an e-mail saying they can call the 24 hour number to get it fixed today if they want. (means I will have to work if they do...)

WTF?!?!??! It's THANKSGIVING damn it.. Get a life and go cook some turkey.... or get laid..... or something....

What the hell is wrong with people? Our society needs to learn to live a little instead of devoting our lives to work work work...

Couldn't have said it better myself:thmbsp:.

I hope this woman decides to wait (or works out the problem herself if possible) until after the holiday to call for help. I don't know her situation but I can understand wanting to using every available hour to gain knowledge and expertise in a field.

No preaching here, and this has nothing to do with this woman looking for a Thanksgiving help desk but wanted to throw out a few thoughts after reading insights from theWB and others... My experience with information technology / knowledge work has been that nights, holidays and weekends are opportunities to gain an edge, to push your abilities, and make yourself a more valuable contributor. It's an internal motivation, and doesn't have to have anything to do with brown-nosing, although good management tends to notice when people increase their skills and are more productive, duh. And, assuming that I'm passionate about what I do, it's fun to have that extra time to crack the books and dig in deeper with some new tools, spreadsheet, code, whatever. I know this isn't true for all fields and occupations.

from what I've seen, successful careers in IT/Knowlegework are about hard work, putting in the legwork to put you in position to legitimately qualify for opportunities. There are probably exceptions, ridiculously talented people who can show up 9-5 and phone it in, but rather than resent them I've learned to just keep my head down and work hard at stuff I enjoy. It is a tricky job to do the work/life balance, works well if work is one of your passions. I love these holiday weekends, I can get in a different frame of mind and really make alot of progress with difficult problems or projects at work. Family time is top priority, there's alot to be said for investing extra time in skills development. :thmbsp:

Again, I realize this has nothing to do with calling others away from family on thanksgiving, just a few thoughts. Enjoy Thanksgiving, and I hope you don't get a help desk call today. :beerchug:

Interesting thread, and I hate being on call.:thumbsdn: I've been doing it so long that I remember the little beepy thing you had to hold up to phone to get messages. I get triple time on holidays, but they can have it. I'd much rather have a day to spend with the Missus and my hounds. My motto is "Work to live, not live to work". I love what I do too, but 5 days a week 8 hours a day is enough of anything. One thing has held true for me over the years, and that is, if you call me out, it's gonna cost you. There's no such thing as a quick fix after hours.:D I sure ain't mad at you for not wanting to work a holiday Similost. Especially on account of a suck up.:D

Crap, Shoulda kept my mouth shut. Just got a call from the alarm company. Gotta drive to work and check into it.....

Oh well, off to work I go....

TheWB is right, and so was Simi. There is nothing wrong with hard work--so long as it is necessary. It's the ones who want to work hard 7/24/365 and try to drag others with them when it is not absolutely necessary that can KMA. 40 hours with a little OT, 8 or so hours is okey doke with me. Beyond that it damn well better be a life threatening disaster.

I've turned down "on call" jobs because I have no desire to "live for work".

Think what you will of that. I don't really care.

Dave

Hear, hear! What Eddie said.

. I just don't like being servant to others that believe us people in IT have no lives and are only here to serve them at any moments whim. I guess unless you work in the legal field, it's hard to understand the typical "diva-ness" of the majority.

try doing IT at a university.

all I deal with is holier than thou academics.(not hippie lit or philosophy types either, try engineers, geneticists, and the science ilk)
diva-ness is minor by comparison to some of these PHD holders I have to deal with.

with about 50% of them, I swear, they think that because they have a PHD, they can be rude, and dicks to anyone they consider beneath them.

nothing against engineers, but they tend to be the worst of the bunch.
they figure they're engineers, so they have the right, no .. its their duty to mess with it and make it 100 times worse. and then they get all uppity, wont admit they messed with it, and try to blame you.

every other week I have one of them that took their machine out of AD, and now blame us that they no longer have printers or network shares.

and I fully agree with you Simi, its a paid holiday, your day off.
if some user is having some minor issue, because they chose to work on their day off, that's their problem, not yours.

considering I have job security, and I am only required to work from 9-5, no one gets anything from me outside work hours.
but, I still manage to have a good rapport with my clients, and I do my job well.

weeeeellll.. My first IT job (actually internship) was at a college.. granted not a university, but I do understand what you're saying there... BUT.. I've got 3 attorneys in my office with a PHD in mechanical engineering, and two others in chemical engineering, and one that is close in bio engineering.. SO, I understand what you are saying there too.. HOWEVER, not one of them uses PHD or Dr in their titles. The attorneys I work with are actually all pretty much laid back people. Pretty crazy, I would have never expected that with a Juris and a PHD. You would think that would be twice the attitude. It seems to actually half it or more

A job is much more than a way to make a living. It gives purpose to life, and challenges to overcome. It is in large part how we determine our worth, and I speak from experience when I say that there is very little worse than feeling worthless, and valueless.
.....for second reading....really good thoughts.....
Hey, I meant it as a reward for a job well-done.
.....and yet again, TenToze is misunderstood....here is a Guy who HAS to lay down the law on occasion, but otherwise seeks harmony and humor.....

.....many great comments in this thread.....

.....no one sees the real situation like Similost....for no extra pay at all, he is called in to work on Thanksgiving Day for something that could have just as easily waited until later.....

I think I'll get myself a little something to drink too and realize others see things differently, even if they are inconsiderate of other's holiday plans. Even the attorneys don't bother the staff on the big holidays.
I think your point is very clear - it's about the inconsiderate people that think nothing of anyone other than themselves, not the mission critical events that you respond to. Sadly, all too often these days asking someone to be considerate of others is a concept that they are not at all familiar with.

Hey, today is one of these "special" days of the year that are about family. These days are far too few.

I happen to empathise completely with Simi; if it ain't mission critical, then it can wait. Hats off to those who are emergency responders, the military, and all those who work today. I know my wife, kid, and I will be going over to the VA hospital where she works to provide some company to the vets on her ward who don't have relatives in town visiting.

Happy turkey day!
Amen to that! And Kudos to you, your wife and your kid for what you did today sheltie dave! :thmbsp:

I work in retail and I gotta agree. I regularily disparage retailers open on holidays, and more so the inconsiderate louts who are too damn lazy to buy gas, food, beer, wine, batteries, etc BEFORE the holiday.

Kudos to any and all retailers and service folks that are considerate enough of their help to close on the holidays.

And screw you KMart for being open today
Here, here! As a former retailer I couldn't agree more! For the sake of what remains of the American Family (and the economy, and the energy crisis, etc., etc.) we ALL need to go back to the days when ALL stores and business' were closed on Sunday. Good employers get good employees by being considerate of them and fair to them. It works both ways.

I don't know if he is "needed", but he is definitely "wanted". Unfortunately, today's world doesn't understand the difference between the two.
What's the downside to wait until tomorrow???
Exactly, especially in this case!

I don't think anyone here doesn't respect and sympathize with those who are away from their families today because of their duty to critical functions. The men and women in the Armed Service, fire, police, medical and necessary, critical operations certainly do deserve our plentiful thanks at the table today for their sacrifices, past, present and future. :thmbsp:

My issue is with those NON critical, service functions that are unnecessarily open that tear families apart on these holidays. If you're an owner and YOU choose to be open and run your business, that's fine by me. But if you choose to be open, take the day off, and force the staff to spoil their holiday, well, I hope you don't sell a damn thing...
I couldn't agree more! :thmbsp: I will not spend a dime at any store that is open on a Holiday. Frankly, it really pisses me off to see stores open on holidays when they should be closed to allow all employees to spend some quality time with their families. I know that might be asking a lot. :sigh: It also says a lot about the company.

So, if the result of all this is that a few of us are reminded to be a little bit more considerate of people in non mission critical situations and a little bit more grateful and aware of those that are, then it's all worthwhile. Go hug the Doc's and the nurses in the Emergency room, the countless others that are out there waiting to bail your butt out just in case..., shake the hand of a fire fighter, say an extra prayer for those in the military, and kiss a cop! :D

I do hope that you and yours had a great Thanksgiving. And I hope that you salvaged yours Simi.

Dunno about your areas but all the stores here are advertising special sales that start at 5:00 AM. I know two customers that they won't be seeing, not at 5:00 AM or 5:00 PM either.

Yeah, the big malls in Knoxville were supposed to open up at 4 or 5 this morning... There is NOTHING in a store that I could possibly want that could drag my butt outta a nice warm bed to go shopping at that ungodly hour...I'm sorry, I just don't "get it".

Only store I'm going to today is 7-11 to get some smokes. Then I'm gonna head to the garage and get to work on veneering my other Peavey.

I do need to get out and go shopping tomorrow though :( It's my wife's birthday on Tuesday, and I'm the typical husband.. wait till the last minute...

I really, really miss the days when NOTHING was open on Thanksgiving (or Christmas). You could go downtown and it would be totally quiet, not a soul on the street. Now, just another day, you can do just about anything. I saw that both the Dollar General and Family Dollar in our little town were open yesterday, along with all the convenience stores and the supermarket. Sad.
