XRT20 Speaker System Restoration (and questions)

Hey - what's all this crap I see about folks giving you a hard time about your listening space? Was that a joke??
If you're including me as one of those folks, I wasn't giving him crap at all. I was responding to a post where he was expressing concern over the size of his room, and I commented that his quoted XRT dimensions were incorrect, in his favor. I was hoping to ease his mind a bit.

Haha, naw, man, gmccaughey just hipped me to the fact that I was way off on the dimensions of these very not-small speakers.

After considering the deal, I may just pony up his asking price, and keep my beloved Sansui, but that would be stupid. Anyway, next Saturday, I reckon I'll have them.

WELL, THEY ARE HOME!!!!!!! The guy was a nice fella, but immediately stuck a sacrificial lamb speaker onto my beloved Sansui 9090db (good night, sweet prince, lol) and scratched the top. Well, it's his headache now.

Cabs are a bit rough, and one tweeter clump (forget what I should call it) doesn't work, tho we hooked leads from the amp to EACH tweeter, and they all tweeted. I'm thinking a corrosion issue on the connecting leads.

Also, seller couldn't find the bolts that go in the back. Anyone know offhand what to ask for at Ace Hardware?

And......anyone have an owners manual?

These are pretty much as far as I'll take this hobby. Gotta recap the crossovers, refoam all woofers, figure out why that one tweeter pod isn't working, and do a little cab freshening.

Then it is on to serious sound!

On a side note, I feel like the person on a very high dive that just took that first step. If my 9090db isn't safe from sell-itis, nothing is, which is good, cause I'm drowning in this stuff.

Well congratulations! Let me be the first to welcome you to the world of McIntosh. After you get them restored, you'll enjoy them til you expire!

Negative my good sir. I was referring to an old thread where OJ said mods had to step in.

Since I turn 45 tomorrow, let's hope that's a few decades of listening, at least.

Those stupid speaker connectors are a travesty for such a high-end speaker. Jesus, I know the bean counters run everything, but couldn't McIntosh pony up another buck for decent terminals??

OH man, if I remember correctly, I know the thread of which you speak. It's a thread about our listening spaces. Some asshat chimed in and dogged me pretty good. I was fairly new at the time, and what was beautiful was how the old guard (Urizen, I believe) chimed in and defended me.

That's been some time ago, if that's what you are referring to.

I love this place.

I hear ya' ... This was changed on the XRT22 - nice 5 way binding posts they got.

Correct. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

Thanks, everyone!

If someone has a manual, could you please tell me the size of those bolts?? Dude couldn't find them, so I cannot set everything up.

I know Ace Hardware will have something, if I only knew the size. I can see me taking one of the 4 tweeter blocks and going into the store with it to get the correct bolt, lol.

ALSO,

Does anyone have a specific refoam kit they recommend?? Several out there......didn't know if any were better than the others.

And @w1jim, did you shim the ones you refoamed?? Previous owner used to work for EPI, and many other places, and said these woofers are actually CTS woofers (No speakers made at mcintosh "In House"....I know nothing, lol) and that they're pretty forgiving. I have refoamed perhaps 15 sets of speakers, never ONCE have I shimmed. Just curious on that.

Yes, I used shims - but I think in general the larger the speaker the more you can always without using shims.
Look back in this thread to see if I posted where I got the foams - I want to say it was an eBay seller.
While I have a manual I don't think they mention the bolt sizes - if not I'll pull one and measure it.
I'm sure the defective tweeter pod will be an easy fix. Maybe the cable or the connector on the big box (etc).

Surprise - the manual has all kinds of information!

The bolts that hold the braces to the rear of the woofer cabinet are 1/4-20 x 1.5"..

The foot assembly on the bottom of the tweeter panel is 1/4-20 x 5/8". It seems to imply that this will work for either one or two feet sandwiched but I suspect for two you might need a slightly longer bolt.
Either way - these bolts are very common and inexpensive.

Oh - check your tweeter fuses!

w1jim, THANKS!!!!! I'll head to Ace Hardware and procure these.

Guessing those tweeter fuses are fine, it was only the bottom 4 tweeters, and ALL produced sound when amp leads went directly to them. Going to clean all the wiring up, see what it is. Gotta be something simple.

And a big shout out to gmccaughey, who contacted Roger Russell, who actually looked at the listing and commented on the very speakers sitting on my back porch, awaiting their place in my home.

How freaking cool is THAT??
