Yamaha B-1 restoration/repair

No. Had no time for the B-1s. I would much rather buy the boards that fit the 50mm caps from someone that alredy made them.
but yeah, I am still looking at squizing these cans in at some point.

Nick, can I preorder a couple of the boards for the filter cap mod? They would make nice stocking stuffers for Christmas. :)
LOL, I have been telling Saint Nick for a whole year, that's what I wanted for Chrismas. I guess I wasn't nice enough and I might endup having to make my own.

no and unfortunately they are discontinued. I cannot understand why Panasonic stopped making large uf size cans. They make some of the best PSU caps.
Unfortunately I only have 8 of these, so enough for 2X B-1s. I will need an alternative solution for my 3rd B-1
I have a good stock of Pannies for the B-2s. Placed a good size order just in time before those went away...in case you ever need those, let me know.

Woohoo!
I think I just found an alternative solution for the "missing" set. Hint: It starts with four of these:
Very nice but believe me, there's not a mm to spare in there; I'm pushing the limits with mine but by all means prove me wrong. :)

...but if they fit, I will have the B-1 singing before Christmas. Pulling that B-1 on the bench tonight :D

OK, so it is tight..really tight, but the 51mm would fit. Problem is the height on these things. They have the damn chasis mounting screw on top.

here is how they would theoretically fit..

That is as far as I got tonight. I will play with it more in the next couple of days.

BTW, the B-1 from Lane is pretty virgin as far as I could tell...but not anymore

A bunch of dust and lytics on their last mile. The power resistors below really baked this thing up. I have to think of a solution because any other cap would be exposed to the same rising heat from those resistors.

the main caps are still in decent shape based on my El Cheapo tester results.
Capacitance on all four is between 14.25mF-15.1mF
ESR is relatively OK between 0.16ohm -0.24ohm

I will throw these things on the Sencore Z tester in a few days and reform them while at it. They will make a nice fixture to keep around

Still pondering on the power supply board #2

Found out that the original mpsa42 transistors have much lower hfe from the new ones I got, so the -200V cannot be adjusted at all!

The -200 goes up to 230 after power up and then is not steady, slowly declines under 200

Still looking for MPU60 and the 2SK1447, 2SK1448
I missed your comments on this thread.
If you replace with mpsa42/92, these are operating at their spec limits in PSU board #2. You would be much better off replacing the mpasa all together.

Hi Rottalpha, thank you for the tip. What will you replace the mpsa 42/92 with?

Hello guys,
I found this thread by chance and I wondered if some could help me to find the Tokin 2SK180. I have a Yamaha B1 which is down since several years now with its output devices broken. Is it possible to source two "matched" pairs of 2SK180 within USA ? I am in South America so they have to be sent abroad. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Claudio.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Claudio and welcome to Audiokarma! Always nice to meet another B-1 owner even if it's not working.

Sadly, due to the recent rediscovery of V-FET's by Nelson Pass and others the 2SK180's are quickly becoming as scarce as 2SK77's ...
