Yamaha B-2 Amp

Hello B-2, Theophile, Bully and Echowars. I too am amazed at the most excellent
sound of the Yamaha v-fets. Got lucky enough to find a B-1, C-1 and some NS-1000's.
A technician that used to work for a local Hi-end shop is looking at another B-1 for me
at the present. I'm happy that EchoWars has the expertise to keep us V-fetters going.
Love the sound of the NS-1000's. I still love my Klipschorns, it's amazing, on some stuff
they give the 1000's a good run for their money. You must have the new crossover (AK-3) or better though. Echowars, will would e-mail me and discuss working on a
B-1 for me? I love the B-2's also, but I think the B-1 is fatter and deeper. Happiness

Just schlepped the second B-2 into place on the rack and fired it up with the NS-1000Ms. Not sure it doesn't sound just a fuzz better than the other one. Letting it run it for a while after EWs refurbishment before I finish the mods needed to biamp the NS-1000Ms. Probably use this one to run the mid/tweeter drivers and the other to run the woofers. Should be fun!
 
Pulling apart my B-2 parts mule as a dry-run in preparation to doing further updates on my good B-2 amps and thought I would post a couple of pic's. First is from the rear with her panties pulled down. :naughty: Is a nice design. Simply remove 5-screws and then tips down from the top on a pair of side hinges. Makes life easy. What you see is the input wiring on the left side of the CB and the switch wires that select either DC or cap coupled input and meter operation (either of two internal sensitivies or operation from an external power source) on the right side. Further to the right are the speaker terminals. Are riveted in place, so have to be drilled out.

My plan is to install better speaker terminals and input RCA jacks. Plenty of room and not a big deal.

In the second pic you see the ends of the four 18,000uf 63 volt Nichicon Gold filter caps. About as good as it gets for a filter cap. The hot ends are soldered into the CB and then feed the PS board you see tipped up. Just need to figure out which leads are which to install the by-pass caps. Again, not a big deal.

Someone was going on about how the SX-1980/1250 have 22,000uf per side. The B-2 has 36.000uf per side. Plenty of reserve built right in with a very high grade cap. Yamaha wasn't scimping on their VFET amps. Would be interesting to know what the B-1 has for PS caps if anyone has the schematic.

The final upgrade planned is to bypass all the variable/selectable input/output controls to make the signal path as straight and component-free as possible. That will probably be next year, though. Enjoy!!

funny you shoud post that now - I'm updating the TVK B-2 post tomorrow with a description sent by a fellow who's done on his three B-2s all what you are about to do! Should get together and exchange tips!
Wish I could stack N7Bs like you have stacked B-2s!
 
about that "external" input.

G'day B-2 and all,
My impression(haven't tested this theory)is that the "external" inputs were a way of using the B-2's meters to display the reading from another piece of equipment(?) :scratch2:
I still fantasise about using the v-fet outputs from the B-2 to make the world's best single-ended amp. :)

That's what the owner's manual states.

Buy that B-2 on eBay and send it to me and then I'll send along the VFETs and heat sinks for your use in a single ended amp. :D
 
Just put new bulbs (4) in the meters for Walker's B-2. Got them at RS, #7219, two to pack for the ghastly sum of 75 cents, each. Bought all they had (8) and think I'll get a stock of them. While just slightly dimmer than the stock bulb, they are easier to work with, the price is right and RS is just up the road. Pretty good deal!!
 
That's the bulb model number. The RS part number is 272-1092. Are you doing another B-2?

And, what are doing up at this ungodly hour?
 
Oooo...the B-2 has a name connected to it!

Now Glenn, please don't be too hard on me...yet! Just looked at the B-2 nudies posted earlier...haven't seen a schematic yet...looks like there are 2 of the clear boxed relays in there...one per side (I suppose, as I would expect)?

Just for the record...Mr. EW...I'm looking forward to experiencing yours and Glenn's handy-work...this has always been one of those Yamaha amps that in my younger days I longed for...I remember the brochures (I have carried an A-1 brochure with me for almost 30 years!...can no longer find the B-2, CA-810, 2010, CR 620 and 2020 brochures). I might just go into the Music Room and never come out!

Watch out...I may have some equipment coming your way (EW)...if you are ready willing and able...I have a few other things that need looking at that are beyond my expertise (such as it is!).

The B-2 Monster is Here! Earth's orbit has shifted slightly...

Well, after some fine packing by Mr. Yamaha B-2 himself, some hand wringing by me, trepidation about its non-starting upon arrival (turned out to be just one little fuse that worked at first and then HA!! I did discover that the connection was broken--got to know the insides of this beauty early in our relationship! :thmbsp:), fuses replaced, top on, switch flicked, protection off and relays....CLICK!...the B-2 has launched in our music room! More specifics to follow, but as I said to Glenn (B-2): :banana:

"Boy, can this amplifier make a cheap CD player and speakers sound great! " Not that I have been missing much with a CA-2010 and an A-1, but goodness, talk about a full sonic shower. At the moment, until I have a preamp hooked-up (fingers crossed for that C-2!), I'm using the raw output of this amplifier direct from a CDP and I feel like, "...who needs tone controls and variable loudness..." The clarity, breadth of the sound and presence of the musicians in the room--all quite breathtaking. Gee...and the meters ain't bad to watch either! :music:

The listening so far has been limited to less than a 1/2 hour with peaks at about 1 wpc...this amp really fills the speakers (not even the nice old ADSs!).

More to follow...it's been a pleasure to assist Mr. B-2 with his house cleaning!

I hate it when fuses go HA!, but happily one can replace them with fuses with better manners and have a working amp once again. How 'bout that B-2? Ain't it grand? I consider myself lucky to own one.
 
I can't wait to flip the Power switch again, but everyone is sleeping for the night!
