yamaha c-4 preamp problem maybe waterdamage?

ah, got it! thanks :-)

I feel like the dad who's trying to learn what LoL and WTF mean and think it's Lots of Love and Why The Face

;-)

Some tuner geeks (I'm one) call tuners 'tunas' -- I guess just to be 'different' like some folks spell 'score' 'scroe' ....

I am a member of a FM tuner group and there, 'tunas' is used just as frequently as 'tuners'.

the only way (i think) tuna makes sence if your talking with alot of slang.. like you are talking ghetto talk.. hey homie.. what happened to ya tunna? instead of tunner...

Geez, Dave ... it's not just the LEDs I'm talking about! I mean you made his beatup, dented C-4 look like the winner at the beauty pagent. And, best, of all, looks is just a part of it .... wait till he hooks it up to his system. THEN he'll be really pleased.

then i'l fill pages up with dancing bannanas! and headphone guys!:music:

actually im really really excited.. the preamp is basically the main link in my system..
the main source of my music is from my computers sound out.. that normally would run into my preamps aux input.. the m-4 poweramp i have is usually on preout1..
than preout2 runs into another reciever that i use to to pick up the sound my speakers dont cover.. also to a subwoofer..

as of now, i have my computers sound out running directly into my m-4..
its really difficult to controll the volume through the computers volume pannel.. when i adjust the volume with my keyboards volume button.. it moves a decient distance.. its either loud or allthoway down.. a quiet volume isnt noticeable on the screen.. i have to lower it althoway down.. than use the arrow up key once. to make it at the lowest possible.. than i wont wake the dead.. its diffucult at the moment..
i also got some decient headphones for my birthday! going to use the c-4 to give them the real sound test!!

hey dave.. got a little question for you..
when i was useing both pre 1 and 2 on the outputs on the c-4..
i noticed when i was useing pre1 and then pushed the button to enable pre2.. the volume for pre 1 would drop some.. and vice versa when turning off pre2 the volume for pre1 would go up.. is that supposed to happen?

I´ll check it out..Might have something to do with the input impedence difference between the Reciever " X " and the M-4.I have a couple M-45's I can hook up to it with a audio signal generator input on the AUX.Or just measure the output of each pre-out on the o'scope at a fixed input level.

really cool!! is that something you have ever noticed with yours?
how do you use your rig dave?
i noticed you have 2 amps below your c-4 and m-4 that have bright blue leds!
in a photo somewhere :scratch2:
it looks like a verry nice setup!
do you use the m-4 to power your yamaha ns speakers or the ones with blue leds? im guessing those 2 things are real monsters! are those the 2- DIY esp mosfet power amps listed in your sig?

yea my room is needing alot of tlc at the moment.. dusting, re arranging.. the whole works..
im soon to take everything off the stack. clean it all. install a really quiet 12v fan behind the units to keep airflow going.. and that will be my chance for a good cleaning.. :D

Hey, great to see you got your C-4 back!

Now, not to sound too much like a parent here (no, I'm not gonna say anything about cleaning up!), but you really ought to have more air space for that M-4. I'd suggest giving a few more inches of room above it so the heat doesn't go right up to your newly refurbished C-4. Just a helpful hint

great idea.. that was the reason that i was going to add a fan..
and actually the m-4 doesent really get hot.. warm when used for a long time..

im not sure if it does now or not.. but the c-4 used to be the one making all the heat..

i guess i could add a coupple washers or something... maybe take 4 identical heatsinks and use them as spacers.. :scratch2:

Yeah, my M-4 doesn't get too warm either, but still, heat rises and if you can increase the space between the preamp and amp that may help you avoid problems down the road.

Very cool setup! I grew up around almost the same thing, but with the M2 amp, and I love the look (and sound!) of that era Yamaha gear. Those big, square, glowy buttons fascinate me.

ty brianR!
the buttons fascinate me too! :D
i love the sleek black look.. and with the colors and power at hand..
its really cool gear!

with my c-70 and m-70, the c-70 is class a, the m-70 isn't, which explains the heat difference. it's not volume that matters. A class A amp actually gets really hot when it's NOT running full blast (by design).

maybe your c-4 m-4 situation is like that too.

Anyone have recommendations about what to use when replacing the (now broken) glue that was used to hold the transistor heat-sinks in a Yamaha C-2 power supply section?

Probably be differing opinions here. But when heatsinks have no provisions for self-tapping screws like the C-2's I use permatex black silicone # 81158.The heatsink surface to be bonded needs to be clean as well as the PC board clean of all old glue.
