Yamaha C-65 inquiry

Then all ya gotta do is enjoy the music. I still can't believe the fidelity I'm getting from tweaking this combo this way. Am I late to the party discovering things ya'll figured out already? Are your power amps attenuators set full max at the moment, as mine were?

Are your power amps attenuators set full max at the moment,
I remember one time I wish I had. The first time I went to Saudi. I wish I had run them down half way. I came back from Saudi and found a blown Be tweeter (NS-1000) and a blown output transistor in my M-4. My X's high school delinquents partying.

I discovered this fidelity epiphany at a Friday night wedding reception. I glanced at the DJ's pre-amp levels while looking for an outlet to charge my phone for more photos. He had a nice set up.
Got home and emulated it. Making the pre amp do more work via some tweaking that piece, vice trying to force fidelity from the power amp via the input levels like in the past. It was eye opening, or should say, ear opening. Running the amp at mid range input level.

Running the M-60/65 power amp input levels at mid range also satisfied an anomally query I've had had in the past about them. They tested unbalanced after a re-cap, biased differently, too etc.
But now it makes more sense. It's the input.

I am currently running a C-4 into a CA-1010 main in.
Anyway. I don't remember where I read it. But, Someone said that if you ran more preamp the better the performance. I do it a lot when running a C-XX pre with Continuous Variable Loudness.

^ I feel like a fool running separates the way I have been in the past. It seems the music fidelity lies hidden in the control amp. I'm putting my pre-amps to work going forward. The f'ers cost more and have twice as many caps to replace. Now I know why. Live and learn I suppose.

Again...what shocked me the most was how much cooler the power amp ran in class A mode...By letting the control amp run hotter instead, developing the input. The control amp didn't get physically hot per say, just got utilized more by design. I now understand the beauty of these control amps and hope ya'll find it too. They're not just volume control. Theres a whole soundscspe in there awaiting release. The control amp user manuals won't spell it out for ya'll. It's vague. Finally figured it out. Finally.

There's no way I'm rolling op amps on this C-65. Now that I understand. It's perfect. Just needs power supply caps really. What a lovely piece they made. I'll probably get greedy and swap all 76 caps while in there though and call it good. Ugh, it sounds so good now...the surgery comes soon though.

Ooh my short shaft extenders arrived from Amazon. 5 bucks for a 4 pack. They fit the original broken pot well and fit the balance control wheel good too. Just a reference test.
Now just gotta see how things fit in the C-65 with the short shaft replacement pot. :idea:Hopefully won't have to grind the extenders down but hey, can do if needed.

There might be enough room to use a coupler shaft. Something like this. You could then adjust the length desired.

Personally, I would check McMasterCarr first. Use a caliper to determine needed inside diameter of the coupler

Model RC hobby stores may have small couplers. Smaller the better. A mill/lathe and roll your own.
I'll snail mail ya 2 pot shaft extenders for free if you're interested, as a thanks for your research time. I have 4 and only need 1. Or just...

Thanks Sensei

This piece is making me rethink things. It seems fine with the aged caps. Normally I'd go to town on it but...
I think the prior owner gently used it, without stacking, aka no heat. I think he wrecked the volume/balance controls many years ago and shelfed it. I should milk these caps and this thread a few more years damn it. It sounds too good to F with now...I gotta walk away. If it ain't broke... you know. Fix the pots and leave right? Ugh.

All right I'll call this piece good for awhile until something pukes. I'm happy to have a piece that just needed some basic maintenance for once. F the re-cap & all the grand delusion enhancements I had in mind. Found a good synergy with this piece inputting an M-60, powering some old Polk RTA-11TL's. I'd probably make things worse in attempts at betterment anyway. Hate to say it sounds better than my serviced C-80, but that's a different arrangement. Gotta walk away and enjoy the music for as long as the aged caps allow now.
