I bought a nice looking Yamah CR-620 and it turns on but I get no sound. I'm wondering what would be the first step in trying to diagnose this problem?
Yamaha CR-620 turns on but no sound, what can I do?

Check the fuses on the inside, they may be blown.

There are three fuses on the inside and they all look to be intact. Would this really cause it to not work?

Yes it would. They might all LOOK in tact but try testing them with a multi-meter first.

Only if they are blown. If the fuses are good, it could be that the protection relay (if it has one) isn't kicking in which means its getting DC at the output so its protecting your speakers from getting damaged. I am not familiar with that Yamaha model, but if you could post some pics of the insides, I or someone else here will be able to tell you if it does have a relay. Also, if someone else has the Yamaha CR-620 will be able to tell you if it has a relay or not.

How familiar are you with electronics? Are you comfortable with checking it out yourself, or having someone else do it for you? You can check the simplest things first. Make sure the speaker switch is on. Make sure there are jumpers (if it has them) in the pre out/main in jacks.

I'm not familiar with electronics at all, but I have decided to learn. Very soon I will be posting much more on this site, all the stuff I have now, what I want to fix and questions about where to begin learning. I have a book and a meter and plenty of tools. I'm very handy and know I can do this.
If you mean the speaker switch on the front of the unit, I know that was on.

Unless there is one underneith, I don't see a relay in your picture. Now, you are going to have to go through it and start checking voltages but you are not going to know what you are looking at without a schematic. With a meter, you will need to check the power supply, DC offset, diodes or rectifiers, output transistors. Now you know where you need to start reading up on each of these sections.

Yes it does have a protection relay, it is hidden under that clump of wiring. There are any number of threads here on the CR-620 and CR-820 (there are built on the same chassis). You would have been better off postin in the Yamaha section.
