So - if you had to choose between a Yamaha CR 820 and a Technics SA 5470 which wouyld it be? And why? Help me make a decision that I can't avoid. Yes they're both in fantastic shape.

can you make money on the deal if you buy both? That way you can pick the one you want after comp[aring the two side by side and make a few dollars too.

Restorer-John gives a very good option for you, both are quite well built but for sound, I will give my tip to Yamaha.

Actually I've got both already. It's for my brother who's been helping me out lately. Is the power rating the same for both these units? Thanks all!

The Technics is 65/ch and the Yamaha (I believe) is 55. An insignificant difference in power - but IMHO a significant difference in sound. Which is not to criticise the Technics.

I’ve found that Yamaha build quality usually as good or better than contemporary’s from the same era. I go through a lot of equipment here and every time I get a Yamaha I really have to think twice about selling it. The build quality is usually very nice and Yamaha seemed to be striving for a higher standard in sonic quality and low THD. But saying that, I realize that is not everyone’s cup of tea (think Marantz).

I’ve also had a few Technics including an SA 1000. I find the Technics build quality, especially the mid level and lower is nowhere near that of the Yamaha’s. When I talk about build quality I mean case materials, control operation and feel , and internal electronics. The Technics receivers do sound nice, but to me, part of the attaction of vintage is materials and workmanship.

You're right Bigears, the Technics does sound nice driving my KEF 104's. But the Yamaha will stay with me. How could so many AKers possibly be wrong ? And I love the Yamaha!

If the Technics were a TOTL model - it would stay. In mid-line stuff I'll nod toward the Yamaha too.

Techincs at 100 wpc and above are keepers since they are so rare and sound so good. But for every day grades, the Yamaha is a sweet sounding toy. And, yes I have gifted my share of Technics too!!! :)
