Yamaha P-300?

Chance at getting a Yamaha P-300 locally. Thoughts on its quality? Would it be a worthwhile step up from my bpc Technics BD27? Or, should I hold out for something better?

I have a P-300 and it's an OK deck, possibly a bit better than the Technics, but it's not really a big step up. It depends on how much it would cost you and, of course, its condition. If it's cheap and nice then go for it. Otherwise, save your money and buy something that is a real improvement.

For what it's worth, I own a few different Yamaha turntables and have been very satisfied with them.

The specs from vinylengine show it to be a fully auto, servo direct drive, should be pretty nice.

I know there's at least one extra headshell for it over on that auction site - it kept popping up when I was searching for a headshell for my YP-701.

I don't know what the going price would be on it, but if it's in nice shape, and you can get it for what you'd consider a fair price, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I do my Yamahas.

Good luck.

I came across a couple of comments complaining about the tonearm having resonance issues. It wasn't clear whether it was the table or just poor setup/user error. Is there anything to that?

I'm more or less satisfied with the performance out of my Technics. Since I doubt a nice high-end table is going to land in my lap or sale listings for what I can afford right now, I've been nosing around for Techies of the early and mid 80s. This one happened to come up in my travels not far away for about $35.

That is certainly a decent price if its in good shape.

Yep!

For $35, if it's in good shape, that's a good deal on a Yamaha TT. Any chance you've got a pic or two of it?

Edit: here's a screenshot of the specs from the manual courtesy of vinylengine.

If you make a free account over there, you can download and print the whole user's manual if you decide to get it.

This deck originally came with P-mount and 1/2" mount headshells, so if you do decide to purchase it ask the seller if he has both. If you can come home with both it makes for more cartridge options for you.

I have the P-200, which is all manual, belt drive, and the same arm as the P-300. Never had any resonance issues. I've had several cartridges on that, too, XV-15, Grado, Shure m97xE, even a Shure M91ED/SAS. I have both P mount and 1/2in mount headshells. The only mod I've done to this table is installed RCA Output jacks and stuffed all the crevasses with modeling clay. The P-200 is now relegated to needle-drop duty.

Oh, well. It looked gorgeous. Plugged it in. Spun up. Pop! Magic smoke. No more spin. No sale.

Well that sucks. But at least it happened before the sale, and not a day or two later.

Don't let that discourage you from Yamaha. While that one may have needed a simple cap or resistor fix, there are plenty of great runners still out there.

You might consider a P-X50 series (X being 3,4,5,7,or 8). They tend to be not quite as inexpensive as this one you looked at, but still a great TT for usually less than $100.

Good luck!

My main concern is durability. Unlike a lot of other folks, I have only one rig and don't have the luxury of having a rotation, or being able to do much in the way of DIY repairs. Whatever I buy has to be worth the money, and work flawlessly for a good long time. I have the most experience and comfort owning Pioneer and Technics gear, so I gravitate toward it. That said, I'm open to other brands. And, if I ever reboot things to get myself out of being semi-retired, I might even have more leeway spend-wise.
