I've been running the PC4002M in my main system for a couple of weeks, and it sounds great. As good as it is, I don't think it matches the MX-10000. That said, the differences between such quality amps is fairly subtle.

Sam, did you notice that the output transisters used in the PC5002M are the same as those used in the PC2002M? The PC2002M has 4 pairs per channel and the PC5002M has 10 pairs per channel.

No, I didn't catch that but thanks for the info. One of my pet theories is the old discrete outputs sound more lifelike that the newer module/chip type like Sankens. I know that is a generalization that doesn't take into account overall quality of the piece or even the model of Sanken. It is a prejudice (for want of a better word) I've held for a long time.

The 4002M is a beast, i managed to grab a pair cheap off of the bay and am probably going to run them bridged for 1.4kw per speaker (enough to lay waste to my cruddy wharfedale speakers!). Id like to rebias and look at the circut topology too so if anyone has a service manual they can email me id be totally grateful!
For a more powerful amp the 5002 has what looks like similar size heatsinks but without fans right? i bet that gets a bit toasty.

The PC4002M is a beast. It's also a very fine sounding amp. Did you get the pair that were being sold by a recording studio in the LA area?

The PC5002M runs much cooler than the PC4002M. It's only luke warm to the touch after hours of use.
 
Actually im from England, there was a lot of 5 or so on Ebay a while back and I did a bit of reading and decided to pick up 2 of them. Im sure it was a good decision for $220 (around £150) each. I think they have been mainly used in a studio as the condition is fair but they do have marks on top and are pretty grimey inside. Im working on cleaning them up at the moment but im going to need some compressed air to get all the dust out! The 5002 does extremely well for an older model, its got lower distortion across the board, and it has even more room presencewith its huge size! does the 5002 use toroids? the 4002 uses chunky EI cores which i was suprised to see.

The PC5002M uses non-toroidal transformers. The transformers are a special design called "orient core" and are wound with oxygen-free copper wire.
 
Craig: Great score and at those prices, how can you go wrong??!! I think the meters have an adjustment trimpot. Sometimes they can loose contact and the meter will become lazy. You will have to take the top off. Try cleaning the pot with deoxit or equivalent and then work the pot. That should do it. If it the meter doesn't free up, you may be down on power in that channel.
 
Thanks for reply, that might be worth checking I think ill give it a go. Yamaha have gotten back to me regarding a service manual so ill order it and see if it helps. Worst case is that its mechanical and i might need to order a spare meter.
