I like the volume knob. Sound is pretty good, I wouldn't use it on speakers with particularly low resistance. Never got to test the tuner. I seem to recall it having a phono preamp, but that might have been the 797. Pretty good for the money if you want something with a remote.

I have one in my basement rig with PSB Alpha B1s attached. I was pleasantly surprised with the sound. My PC is hooked up to it via FM transmitter also an old AKAI tapedeck and a Sony discman. The phono is not the greatest ( thin and distant) so I hooked up a inexpensive ($100) separate phono-preamp for my SL-1300. I used to have the Yammy RX 777 which didn't float my boat, I found it to bright and forward for my ears when hooked up to a pair of Paradigm Studio 60s. The 397 and the PSBs sound warmer. Apples and oranges type of situation but that's my expirience. The headphone jack works OK with my Senns HD570 not great depth or layering but reasonable for the price. I had listened to the current BOTL Sony rcvr the Yammy is better to my ears.

I had the next one up and thought it was an excellent sounding receiver. Really good sound and able to drive inefficent speakers pretty well. The phono section was pretty good, but I didn't think that the tuner was anything special.
I would recomend that line, especially if you want a remote control. Good, solid sound for not a lot of money.
