Yamaha RX-V870 channel imbalance

I have just bought a Yamaha RX-V870 amp and the left channel is very much quieter than the right. This is my first proper system (I’ve only had mini systems before) could I be doing something wrong or is there a problem with the amp and I should try to get a refund?

The RX-V's are a bit complex to setup. Could be some3thing in the config, might need a factory reset. Will take a look at the sm...
 
When both the speakers are plugged in the left one is quieter than the right, when I connect the right one to the left speaker output on the amp it goes quiet and if I connect the left speaker on the right it goes normal, the same thing happens on the speaker A and speaker B plugs
 
Unit has pre-out/main in jumpers at the rear, are both jumpers installed.
Also, try with tone bypass in both on/off positions, just to rule out some transistors. Will look at vids...

I tried it with the tone bypass in both on and off and it is the same
 
You could try pulling the pre-out/main in jumpers at rear and connect an iphone or another amp into the main-in, set iphone vol to minimum before powering up, will look for reset procedure.

You mean I should I pull out both of these before connecting an iPhone?

Appears to be a older unit with minimal spkr setup, didn't see a factory reset. The owners manual does detail a procedure for setting spkr balance, maily for front/rear but it does appear to cover L and R. Suggest download owners manual and work through this procedure starting pg 12. Looks like a nice RX-V with reasonable THD...

I tried what the manual said, but I couldn't do it as it didn't come with the remote and some of the buttons needed on the remote are not on the amp
I also tried connecting the iPhone and it was still the same

yep, pull out the FRONT IN/OUT jumpers and connect an iphone/ipod... to the IN RCA's ensuring iphone volume is at minimum. Then slowly increase iphone vol, if problem remains then issue with power amp or protection or ...

I did that and the problem went away, what do you think that would mean the problem is?
 
Have you tried through headphones?

Candidates would be power amp, bit unusual, speaker selector switch however both A and B switches tried, or muting relay RY102(?), possibly relay contacts have become pitted. With music playing you could try tapping the relay (red below) with something non-conductive like a chop stick, any change good or bad? Also inspect the connector pins marked in blue, also give this connector a few taps with the chopstick, looking for a bad solder joint.
