Yesterdays University find

Found this at a local estate sale yesterday. It was marked $20. The cabinet felt light so I didin't think there was any drivers in it but the cabinet is worth that to me. Went to pay and the woman told me it was 1/2 price day! Got it home and opened it up and there is a University 312 Triax. Made my day. I only wish there had been a pair. It appears that this was a kit because the builder doesn't have the grill set up right but nothing that can't be fixed.

Anyone else have this set-up and if so how does it sound? (Didn't have time to listen last night). Also, a picture of how the grill is supposed to be installed would be helpful.

A lot of University speakers were sold to kit builders in the 1950's.
If you look in a 50's University catalog, they even have plans for DIY cabinets.

Saratoga, that is cabinet for sure. Thanks. On mine, you can see a little of the
unveneered inside part of the sides beause the baffle slants slightly back. How is this area finished on your cabinet? Or was yours built correctly? Thanks again.

Thanks RC

Actually mine also slants slightly from bottom to top, It looks like this is the correct design to accommodate the trim pieces at the top. On my cab, the inside of the side pieces that are visible (if you put your head up next to the trim) are finished, so it really isn't very noticeable.
Let us know how it sounds with that driver.

I like the grill cloth. Very cool find.:thmbsp:

I have a pair of these cabinets with ev12trxb's in them and I think they sound pretty nice. My cabinets don't have the University decals on them but are definitely Kwikits as well. The veneer, I think I read somewhere, is korina. Coincidentally, I also have some University 312's around here somewhere that I also like a lot (though unfortunately one of the cones was separating from the frame when I found it and so has kind of an ugly, though semi-serviceable, repair). In any event, I think you'll like the way yours sounds. Nice find. Good luck.

Doesn't Ron have one of those drivers? Or a pair, maybe?

Nice grab, refud! I would have had a difficult time passing on it at that price, too...

I just dug out the instruction book for the cab, I have scanned the front baffle pic and you can see that it does have a tilt for the molding.

Saratoga- thanks for the info. It looks like I'll have to get a small piece of Mahogany and finish off that area. ( I'm pretty sure my cabinet is ribbon mahogany veneered).

Rusomon- Thanks!

Nate- what doesn't Ron have?

Gary- yes, they are bone dry, don't know if they were ever finished. A little oil 50 years ago, maybe.

I have a similar pair of 50's University UCX-12 triaxials, in wife-hating 9 cubic foot Allied cabinets.
They had 4uf wax capacitors inside the end bells.
While the speakers still worked, I replaced the two wax caps.
A combo of 3.9uf Solen Fast caps with 0.1uf Sprague Vitamin Q paper-in-oil as bypass caps made 'em sing like birds!

Refud-- I just now took a look at Saratoga48's first link. Ah, so that's where I saw this brochure before. This must be where I got the idea these are korina, which is certainly not to say University never offered other veneers, up to and including mahogany. But it's always good to see some tangible evidence that my memory isn't entirely gone... yet. Anyhow... Have you had a chance to listen to your 312 yet? (I've never had mine in these enclosures, so I'm definitely interested in hearing what you think.

rusomon- It certainly could be Korina, I'm not familiar with that species of wood. I've never seen it at any of the places I buy veneer. Must be hard to come by these days. According to wikipedia it is similar to mahogany.

I didn't get a chance to listen this weekend but I'll let you know when I do. Now to find a second one!

Does anyone have the plans for this enclosure, University EN-12 or KEN-12(kit)? Starting to look like I'll have to build one if I want a pair. I beleive it was in that old book on how to build speaker enclosures. Thanks in advance!

I had some 312's but gave them to Reed. One was functioning fine and the other needed work.

I might just have that plan book but it's going to take some doing to get back in the corner of the basement where my manuals are.

I'll get back to ya!
