Your Lamps/Lights for the dark…

View attachment 2744814Picked this up for cheap at auction earlier this year. Of course the proper chimney cost me way more than the lamp! This is my fourth or fifth.

Aladdins are cool. I have one for power outage lighting. Wouldn't mind a couple more. I need a spare mantle though. I had one but it was located somewhere within the dog's reach and she ate it.

for anyone not familiar with these, its an oil fired mantle lantern. Round wick, but the only thing the flame does is heat the mantle to make it glow, the fire doesn't actually produce much light on it's own. Absolutely silent too, unlike my propane lanterns.

I could be wrong, but I think the lamp pictured is a Rayo, not an Alladin, and it doesn't have a mantle, although you're description of Alladins is quite correct. I have a whole bunch of Rayos, Plume & Atwood, and various early-ish Alladins (model 6s and model 11s, mostly) I've restored and use for light and heat throughout the winter months; I love center draft lamps. As gadget73 said, the wicks are circular, thereby requiring air to be drawn up through a center column to feed the flame, so the bases of all these lamps have cutouts to allow air to enter at the bottom and flow up the column to feed the flame, much like the correctly working draft of a woodstove, fireplace, or furnace. To Rayos or #2 P&A lamps heat my workshop beautifully, AND throw a gorgeous light to boot!

I'll try and include a few pics later.

Bought a nice toilet brush at Ikea. Porcelain body and nickel plated top and bottom. When the brush broke it was just to nice to throw away and how many can say that about a toilet brush. After some thought it looked like lamp material. Bored a hole in the porcelain body found a shade that was made to hang from the ceiling. Lucked out it and it fit the top perfect. Add a remote color changing LED bulb. Turned out well.

I don't miss that "wood smoke" @ So Cal either. It was hell @ (brief) "winters" in Santa Barbara, as whatever noxious fumes emitted caused no end of respiratory discomfort. Whatever type/variety of wood they burn in France does not provoke a similar reaction.

Probably that same world-renowned French oak that is used in aging fine wines. The knotty oak goes to the fireplace. Smoke, with a hint of herbs, fruit and fine linen. Oui oui!

A couple currently lit. The green Aladdin not lit, mantles too scarce & expensive. I'll stick with my Rayos, no mantles needed.

Power went last night, center draft lamps are great to have around. Picked up an Aladdin a while back and found that the mantles are impossible to get.
I feel yer pain. I'm looking at 2 in my living room, one with new, unburned mantle, one needs a mantle. Plus a couple more upstairs, same deal. When they can be found, they're damn expensive & once lit are super fragile. I'll stick with the Rayos & flat-wick lamps. Wicks still available, but they last a looong time if burned properly.

There are a bunch of listings on "The 'Bay" for Aladdin mantles, this is one that is a representative of what I saw ;

And that price is nuckin' futs. Add shipping & it's even more so. When they were under $20, it was borderline feasible to run Aladdin lamps. Now, if they could be ruggedized to the point one needn't worry about breaking one while trying to light the damn thing, the current price MIGHT be justifiable. But Aladdin lamps are cool, even if just for decorative purposes these days.
