Found some KILLER stuff this morning at the Salvation Army near me. Man, it sure pays to show up early on a Monday morning! They've definitely caught on that people are after LPs though. They've started putting the real good stuff in the glass window by the counter, and they're charging 3-5 bucks for that stuff.

Anways, most of this, except for the Grand Funk, was in the regular bin.

The Rascals - Once Upon a Dream
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Stereo, VG+ to EX condition! I'll have to check later to see if how old the pressing is)
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Sly and the Family Stone - Dance to the Music (Odd, doesn't have the same cover as the wikipedia entry--is there an alternate cover?)
Grand Funk Railroad - E Pluribus Funk (very cool, didn't realize the cover is a coin!)
The Dave Brubeck Quartet (1951)

Cost me $8. Not too shabby!

Popped briefly into GW yesterday and snagged a few mint -- and better! -- LPs from amongst the typically scratched and worn offerings:

Great Operatic Duets, a collaboration of Domingo and Milnes on RCA Red Seal

The World's Favorite Tenor Arias, featuring an early 70's Pavarotti on London

Stravinsky's Le Sacre Du Printemps (1921 version), with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal; a Netherlands import on the London label (sealed!)

Wagner's Parsifal, from Hans-Jürgen Syberberg's cinematic version; a French import on the Erato label (also sealed!)

A Guide to Gregorian Chant with Schola Antiqua on Vanguard. Had spied it before and passed but the 5th LP was free, Wifey was already checking out and I had mere seconds to choose.

I had a pretty good weekend at a couple of thrifts, all in pretty good condition:

Todd Rundgren's Utopia
Commodores - Midnight Magic, Natural High & Heroes
The Cars - Panorama
B-52's - Whammy!
Emmylou Harris - Luxury Liner & Profiles II
UB40 - Geffery Morgan
Carly Simon - Anticipation & Hotcakes
Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman & Catch Bull At Four
Poco - Under The Gun
Boz Scaggs - Middle Man
Pretenders - Extended Play
Oregon - Out Of The Woods
Styx - Paradise Theatre (Not Really a Styx fan, bought for holographic record, turns out it's pretty common so not much resell value)
Doobie Brothers - Best of
John Fogerty - Centerfield
Frank Sinatra - Sinatra & Company (Real happy about this one)
Carole King - Tapestry (Finally one in excellent condition)
Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye - Diana & Marvin
The Beat Farmers - Tales of The New West
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life (Booklet but no 45, dangit)

Those are both good albums you're bidding on....Wait, aren't you supposed to be curving your buying? Or are you back on top now financially? Or finally sell a kidney on eBay?

I don't have either one though. I passed on the Stones' Some Girls today for 5 bucks.
That Brubeck was actually Countdown:Time in Outer Space, upon a second look.

Saturday tag sale, $1 each:

Various artists - Jan Howard, Patsy Cline, Maddox Bros. & Rose
Kay Starr - Movin’!
Doris Day - Wonderful Day
Peggy Lee - Pretty Eyes
Dinah Washington - What A Diff’rence a Day Makes!
Dinah Washington - Unforgettable
Nancy Wilson - Hello Young Lovers
Lena Horne - Lena At The Sands
Tammy Wynette - Greatest Hits - Vol. 4
Dakota Staton - The Late, Late Show (My prior copy has a really groty cover)

I really like the Lena Horne, she's becoming one of my favorite singers. I've been looking for some good early jazz by Doris Day, this record is not. This Doris Day is the goody-goody stuff after she made it big in movies. I was thrilled to find any Patsy Cline at all, even though there are only a few songs by her on this disc. The rest are pretty good and will get some play time around here. All were very dirty, all cleaned up very nicely and sound great.

Sunday tag sale I found a nice Beatles Revolver jacket only. They let me have it for free. I may put it on the wall.

Today I hit a local thrift shop I haven't been to in a while, $1 each:
Billy Joel - Piano Man.
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow.

I haven't cleaned them up yet. S.P. is in shrink, but the record looks pretty scratched. I have about four other copies, none too good but at least this one has the best cover I've come across.

I'm not back financially yet gonna take about 3 months, however on a thread someone suggested that if I sell a record I can buy another so as not to spend more money, and that is what I'm doing. I sold $115 worth of records so gonna reward myself by buying a couple of great LP's :D (and keep the change lol.)

copeland3rd.jpg

Aaron Copeland - Third Symphony
The London Symphony conducted by Aaron Copelan

gershwinstillsealed.jpg

and this a nice still sealed Columbia Masterworks two-eye. which i popped open and am gonna spin in it's entirety tomorrow.

I posted mine in the Official Music Score thread, but here's an excerpt.

Tortoise - Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters. (Moderate water damage, pristine vinyl)
Oi!.. The Picture Disc
Oi!.. The Picture Disc Vol 2
Oi!.. Vol 3. (not a picture disc)
Joy Division - Komackino picture disc (very rare)
The B-52's (S/T) original 1979 pressing
Youth Brigade - Sound and Fury

The rest was a lot of 70s and 80s punk, both 12" and 7", some early K Recs albums that are currently out of print, and a good amount of 80s new wave.

This week's finds...
Tag sale:
Beatles - Revolver. Jacket only, seam split, nice enough to frame and put on the wall. No charge.

Church thrift shop, $1 each:
Billy Joel - Piano Man.
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow. Early stereo pressing, jacket NM in shrink, disc visually scratched up but might clean up and play OK. This is probably my fifth copy, still searching for a good mono pressing.

Animal charity thrift shop, 50% sale, so $0.50 each:
Julian Bream with Cremona String Quartet - Boccherini, Haydn. RCA Gold Seal, '80s pressing in shrink, NM.
Huey Lewis and The News - Sports. NM.
Various Artists - Great Songs of Bacharach & David, Capito SQ Quadrophonic, in shrink NM.
Harry Belafonte - Calypso. RCA Victor mono, disc in original glassine sleeve. NM.
The Sound Of Music - Original Soundtrack Recording. Stereo, NM. (A dupe, but I think my existing copy isn't as good.)
Theresa Brewer - The Best Of.
Various Artists - The Headliners - Vol. 2. Columbia Record Club limited edition mono. Includes Brook Benton, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, Dinah Washington, Roger Williams, and others. A rather "eclectic" mix.
Jeff Lorber Fusion - Galaxian.
Verdi - La Traviata (complete). Angel Stereo box set. (This one was $2.50)

Then there were two unusual discs I couldn't pass up. Both are 12 inch 45 RPM EPs pressed in 2003 on "The Social Registry," limited editions of 600 pieces.
Ghost Exits - Cincinnati Riot Blues.
Electroputas - Piano Blooms.

I haven't cleaned or listened to any of them yet. Should keep me out of trouble for a week.

Todays thrift picks:
STING- The Dream Of The Blue Turtles
FRANKLIN, Aretha- Who's Zoomin Who?
NBC Symphony Orcherstra- Toscanini Edition
TRAFFIC- Low Spark Off High Heeled Boys
:D
