Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I've found a company that sells AntiVibe DL-10, which is Aquaplas. Trouble is, the minimum order is for a 5 gallon bucket. About $200, shipped. The manufacturer's minimum order is for five 5 gallon buckets. AFAIK, the mfr is only sending out samples of the DL-30, which is the thick stuff.

Here is my new Ewave project for my daughters appartment at college. The cabs are American Monitor 10 and are built like brick outhouse and the finish is in great condition. A little light sanding and oiling and they will be showroom. I don't know what the woofers are, but they are blown. I am using the Eminence's ASD1001, and the PE 12" round wave guide. Put those with a Marantz 22 series reciever and it should sound pretty good. Cheers.

Bauhausler: These are the woofers I told you about this morning.

Dennis;
Check the EIA code on those woofers. I'll bet they're CTS. I remember seeing those in your garage. Very nice walnut. Re-foaming is fun! You'll be a real DIY-er when you're done. I'll drop off the surrounds when I pick up the GAS preamp on Saturday.

Hey B, the only code number on that speaker is on the cone. It is 2722. and on the maginet which is 2402 in stencle. I can't find a EIA code to match either one of those codes.

I finally finished by EWave. I have been disappointed with my recent purchase of a set of JBL 46710K Cabaret Speakers. The 4671 is not intended for home use but I have read that some people are using it at home. On both my Fisher 500C and 300B SET tube amps, it sounds slow with no highs and muddy bass. On the Fisher, the bass is surprisingly absent.

I just happened to start reading this thread around the time Wayne started contributing and found that RussellC had been Ewaving a similar system with great success. I was still very sceptical because I can't see how the mid and bass could be improved.

Well, I finally had some time to do the crossovers the Ewave. I tried it right away after finishing wiring up 1 crossover. Wow, the change is phenomenal. Just as Russell said, the bass on the 2225H 15" woofer is fast with slam and clarity. It goes pretty darn low and this is with a single ended 300B amp. The clarity of the mid is much much clearer than the JBL original. The high is detailed and surprisingly smooth. I do notice that on some LP's I have to tone down the highs a bit via the LPADs. Overall, the integration of the Ewave into this system is pretty much seamless. Btw, I use the Hi-Eff version of the schematic.

Thanks to Zilch, Jack, RussellC, Wayne P and the rest of the gang for having such enthusiasm for this project. Thanks also for sharing your knowledge so freely.

Hey T, those look great. So the horn on the bottom is dead? I have been thinking about using the 2225 on another project. How does it compare to the 2235?

Nice work, looks familiar! nice neat job on the crossovers as well. The 2225H is a slamming woofer, and sounds great. I am in no, if any hurry to ever "convert" my other pair of 2225H to 2235H. The 2235H definately goes lower, and very powerfully as it does so. But you give up a little "immediacy" for lack of a better word. Drum rim shots sound about as close to real with the 2225H as any driver I have heard. The 2235H doesnt lose a whole lot of slam, just a little, but adds some very delicious bass. Kind of a toss up, my point being that the 2225H is no slouch, and in fact is a very nice, powerful driver. I like them better than 2226H just for the fact they are an exact motor twin to the 2235H, so a recone is easy.

Yes, TnT2, I also used the >95 db crossover version for the 2225H. The 2235H needs the <95 db version. 2 resistors and 1 cap is all the cross over needs (per side) to convert. I know this system will thrill you, my next move is to tweak the woofer section of the cross over, zobel and so forth, if needed.

Enjoy,

Russellc

Thanks Everyone. Dave, the bottom horn is not connected. Although it's made of some kind of plastic, the quality is very decent. Maybe the stock crossover is old or is designed for PA duty, but it just doesn't sound too good for home use. I have heard the 2235H at a friend's house and it does sound as delicious as Russell said. It goes noticeably lower than the 2225H. Russell gave a very good description of their differences. I would try to find a way to use your 2225H. Be on the lookout for the JBL 4507 cabinets (that's what I and Russell use).

Russell, I might try to find a pair of 2235H but won't be converting the 2225H anytime soon. I really like the configuration as it is. After I enjoy this configuration for a bit, I'll try out the 2426J (8-ohm) currently mounted to the horns just to see if it has potential. IIRC, Zilch mentioned that the driver could be removed from the horn by unscrewing it from the adaptor. Is this correct? I tried but it is on pretty tight and I don't want to break the horn throat.

The adapter may be on very tight, as it's never been removed.

Remove it from the horn and mount a lever on the mounting bolt holes.

I used an oil-filter wrench (plastic band type) to grab the magnet, as I recall, but it'd be better to grab the body somehow, instead.

Don't pound anything.... :nono:

Well TnT2, I had an extra set. Just be on the lookout for dead 2225H baskets, they can be had pretty cheap. The recone replaces everything, cone surround, spider, voicecoil, everything is like new.

I have tried JBL 2425H, which is all but identical to 2426H, and it worked very well with the 2235H and standard <95 db crossover. You say you have 2426J, but then say 8 ohms. Isn't the 2426J 16 ohms and the 2426H 8 ohms? Or were the diapraghms replaced with 8 ohm versions? Wayne posted a chart in this thread several pages back showing resistor and capacitor values for attenuation and compensation, he said around 12-14 db for that driver with the 2235H. The 2225H is a little more efficient and with it the driver may need less attenuation.

Can you post a picture of this driver horn combo, showing how it is connected?

Hi D

Have you tried PE12" before? I am thinking about trying them out as well.

Skywave, which Ewave xover an compensation network did you use for this?

How do they sound to you compared to others you've heard?

Hi Kegger.
I'm home today where I have D210s, 6x6 and 8x8 PT waveguides, my 220s and 6 1/2" x 12" waveguides are not here right now. So I can set up the 210 on the smaller waveguides and compare to the 18 Sound XD120s today.

I have standard Econowave x-overs with LPads, the less-than-95dB-efficient version.

In the RTA pic, the top image is raw response, amp directly to waveguide excepting 33uF protection cap in line.

The other uses the E'wave crossover.

Hey Mr. TT, I have not tried them yet, but I think I will swap them into my system in place of my Edgar 350hz midhorns to see how they sound. That is the great thing about using an active crossover, I can adjust the crossover point to match the PE12. I'll let you know how they sound.

Re: PE12, you guys should go back and read Wayne's earlier discussion here of the comparative performance of round vs. rectangular/elliptical waveguides with respect to achievable center/center distance and the generation of interference nulls at crossover.

We may think that round waveguides give wider vertical dispersion by looking at them and reading the specs, but the rules change in that region of the spectrum once they are installed and used with another driver.

Also, if you decide you like round after considering that, anyway, and want a quality round waveguide, see the DDS Engebretson:

http://www.ddshorns.com/catalog.php?page=ENG190Pro

And for elliptical, 18-Sound XT1086:

Thanks, OK sounds like we are using same comp filter setup then.

I will be curious your thoughts on the "sound" of the XD-120's when you compare. :)

I've recently gotten a few drivers and horns myself that I'll post about when I have
more to offer as well. So far the JBL 2404 is making a very good impression on me. :music:

Hey Z, I would normally take all that into concideration, but in this case, my daughter will just use them as a normal kid would, background and parties. I do want to see how they sound though. Cheers.
