Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Display attached, notice the 2 notches.
I agree, violet is good, cyan is not.

Remove the diaphragm and inspect for debris in the gap, or something like a glue particle on the voice coil.

Clean as required.

Then try rotating the diaphragm to each of the four available mounting orientations, remeasuring....

Remove you mean by removing the screws which hold the driver together?

Yes. The back cap comes off, releasing the diaphragm.

Do this in a clean location, and handle the diaphragm carefully, by the terminals or edge only....

Zilch,

I have fixed it, remove diaphram (I have not done it before), blow on it to remove any dust.

What can I say, I am speaking to a resident expert and the respond is "almost" instantaneous...Everything for FREE!!!

Many thanks.

I am taking a rest for now and will return to perform x-over via DC2496 digital x-over. Will report back..

Cheers.

Excellent!

It's not usually that easy, and I was looking for gap cleaning instructions on the PE website to post. While they show a picture of the process in the catalog (P. 233) I am not finding a link there.

Here it is. I assume the polar is vertical.

Perhaps you can explain for us what's going on there with respect to aiming of the node in B3 vs. LR4:

http://www.musicanddesign.com/Power3.html

The polar charts shown look like what you would expect in the vertical plane with vertically stacked sound sources.

The page you linked is from John Kreskovsky's MusicAndDesign.com. I have found his work to be pretty good, and I often reference his pages, especially the one with measurements of push-pull drive.

This page I hadn't seen before. I am not sure why the polars charts seem to be repeated several times, so I'll have to study it more. Maybe there's a glitch or something. But I do know that the two polar charts I see show the nulls we're talking about. One shows nulls centered equidistant from the forward axis, the other shows them shifted up about 30 degrees. This indicates a delay on the top driver. It could be from electrical phase shift such as a higher-order filter, digital processing delay or by physical offset.

Another thing that is apparent is the two sound sources radiate omnidirectionally into halfspace, hemispherically actually, from a baffle. If the sound sources were more directional, the lobes outside the nulls would be smaller. That's the goal of a good DI-matched loudspeaker - to remove the lobes at the top and bottom by virtue of the directivity of the beaming midwoofer and the directivity of the horn tweeter. This directivity throws less energy into those upper and lower lobes, and the nulls serve to punctuate the cutoff of the pattern, leaving only the forward lobe. Ideally, that's what we want - only the forward lobe in the vertical plane. That's also why I like using tweeters with narrow vertical coverage, so the vertical pattern stays narrow above crossover.

Testing Econowaveguide using DCX2496

Hi,

I thought I post the results(on axis) I got from the 2 econowaveguide and D220Ti combo.

I use DCX2496 set with the following parameters:

1. 2nd order LR HP @ 2Khz
2. High Pass shelving set at 17.5Khz @ 3.5db gain

the 2 combos look pretty close, see Attachment. The next step is to integrate with the JBL woofer in hand. Looks pretty good for a $55/combo.

here is the Attachment....
Heh. Just look at THAT, wouldya? :thmbsp:

Spot on +/- 2.5 dB; better if we ignore the VHF spike.

AKers're are gonna want to know how they sound to you once you get the woofers running with them, of course.

[And pics. We'll want PICS, too...! ]

Another convert is brought into the fold. While both my drivers sound good, until I can measure them all this talk of tweeking diaphragms is making me wonder how mine measure. Wont know until I get more toys to measure with.
My test cds and rad shack sound meter arent good enough, but I suppose if the measurements for one driver are consistent, I could compare driver measurements to see if they are similar I guess. Oh well, my econowaves are packed up for the move right now anyway.:(

Wondering if that is a screenshot from Soundeasy?
If not, please tell us what you use and how you like it.

Are you using the same HP and EQ shelf and boost for both drivers in the DCX?

Yes to both questions, all results obtained from signal passing through the DCX2496. The measurements obtained from Soundeasy. I recommend DCX if you want to develop speakers, no need to buy HEAPS of expensive caps and inductors. DCX is about $250 from Ebay and easy to resell.

Soundeasy is very powerful but not cheap, I got my genuine copy from my friend. The support from seller is not very good, adequate support from the Soundeasy forum.

cheers.

I am looking for an all around solution for crossover, box design and measurements. I have a feeling Soundeasy is a steep learning curve. Additionally I don't have a PC, so anyway I look at it, and whatever software (freeware or otherwise) I use, will need to spend some cash.

I might Boot Camp my Mac if that doesn't cost too much and IF it works.
:)

Don't worry about it if they both sound the same and good. Mine are audibly different. Haven't had time here to do tweaking or even decide what my next step is.

Good luck with the move.

Glad I did not get the call to assist.
LOL.

I have all the "big" speakers on rollers and an appliance dolly as well! Too bad the furniture isnt!:naughty:

Did you ever locate any text to go with the illustration of the gap cleaning procedure? Certainly nothing more than the one pic in the actual catalog. This looks like it would be really good info, albeit slightly off topic.:D
