Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

OK. Submitted for # 50. Pair number one of the three pair of e-waves I currently have in the works. Also, have a pair of e-wave LE-14A Santana's, 123A-1 fitted Altec 891's and the thing that started the whole e-wave thing for me, a pair of Santana II's with 811B's, BMS drivers and LE-120H bottom.

ROSSO, those look like Altec 879 Santana's, which is almost the perfect size for building an LE14 based EconoWave in. I have built two of them, one is my avatar. Well, OK, it really uses BMS HF drivers, but the pair in the garage uses D220Ti's. You will love them in this cabinet, guaranteed.

OK, someone step up with pair number 50. Still rolling along and still picking up new e'wavers. A very impressive project, still looking forward to more work with the B&C DE 250 compresson drivers. While the 220 ti is seemingly taylor made for this project, and performance has shocked many, the DE 250 is quite a bit more clear. Once I've been listening to it and go back, I find a little residual fuzziness that isnt present on the DE 250 driver.

Also, in the begining the DE 250 seemed to to go right through my head, something very sharp. I had to turn down the attenuation WAY down to avoid this. Some say that there is a peak that needs to be tamed. I have tried the suggested cap and coil on the high pass and it seemed to help this a little. What has helped more is just play time. It now seems fine about in the middle of the attenuators range and sounds great. Right now I'm using the standard < 95 db HP, and the low pass from JBL 4430. Maybe the 2235H has a similar hump to the LE14A driver, as the components in the JBL crossover's LP seems to be somewhere in the neighborhood of around 900 hz (electrically) as well, it uses the same cap 12 uf as the standard E'wave LP, but a much larger 2.6 coil. Of course this is strickly subjective opinion of yours truely, havent yet attained measurement ability yet.

Anyone else having fun with DE 250?

Russellc

Yep. Still using the standard LE14 crossover with mine, with LE14s (no tweaks). Pot dialed in around 10 o'clock. At some point you have to say quit messing with the parts and enjoy. Best speakers I've owned, smooth and clear.

thanks Jackgiff, I have the selenium d210ti s already, need to order the parts and the ph612 horn, but I want to use the Eminence beta 12a-2 12inch speaker, (2 way PA speakers for Karaoke) which has a frequency range from 43 - 3800 Hz , SPL 98db, would it be a good choice to use this 12 speaker?

zilch,

i'm quite positive that you've mentioned this in this thread somewhere, but so far, in your experience, which woofers do you think match the ewave horns/selenium drivers the best (or list of several good candidates)? - to produce most balanced overall output.

i'm about to order parts for my second ewave project, and just wanted to hear your thoughts on this. i'm sure i can get my hands on wide variety of woofers/cabs if i needed to. thanks in advance....

Zilch, with the Eminence beta12a-2 , do you think I can make the LF cross at say 2KHz instead of 1.2Khz, would I be getting more vocal range versus less bass punch with this type of LF woofer Crossover.

You guys are asking questions I just can't answer; the cumulative experience of the participants here is far more comprehensive than my own. I've mostly worked with vintage JBL woofers, as has Jack. They've worked well for us, but that doesn't mean they are optimum for all applications and preferences.

I don't know Eminence woofers from a hole in the ground; I've only worked with one neodymium 15" model for a sound reinforcement client, and he ended up selling them soon thereafter. I am begging off again -- tweak the filters and see what happens. Your starting point is well documented here....

ok, Zilch, could you tell me the frequency range specifications on the JBL woofer that you have used
There is no "The" JBL woofer, it's a half-dozen different ones, and here's the really bad news, with respect to vintage JBLs, while the T/S parameters are available for most of them, the only way to assess their response capabilities is to measure them, whereas for many modern drivers, the response curves are available. Still, the specs don't tell the story; you've got to read them in the context of their measured response, and even then, it's not until you actually build with them that you know their capabilities and their limits.

I understand that's not what you want to hear, but it's how it is....

i see what you mean zilch.

i'm thinking of trying smaller speakers such as AR 7, dynaco A25, or smaller jbl's.

i'll post when i start the project. thanks.

Several of us are working with the smaller JBL PT waveguides, 6" x 6", 8" x 8" , the small 18-Sound ellipticals, the Dayton 7" x 7", and I have several others, and other drivers, on the way, including one which I believe will fit in the Dynaco A25.

Generally, what I have done with these falls outside the mainstream of E'Wave proper, and is posted elsewhere on the site, but I try to at least mention them here. My most recent "small" E'Wave project is Boston Acoustics A60 with the JBL 6" square waveguide, Selenium D220Ti, and standard E'Wave crossover. I also swapped in JBL 116H woofers. Sum total: a slam dunk.

My KLH-17 upgrade used the Dayton waveguide and Classic 10" woofers, ported; several members have built those. The small 18-Sound ellipticals went into AR4x. I'm saying there's lots of fun smaller stuff to try incorporating the E'Wave design principles.... :thmbsp:

Zilch , I see that most of the econowavers are using the printed circuit board, looks premanufactured for the econo Xover , where can these circuitboards be bought?

Same box volume as the 879 Santana, but no pseudo slate tops. Front baffle is the same width, but about 3/4" shorter. LE14 Santana photo is coming. They were in the living room, but my wife had her bunco buddies over, so they were unavailable for photos (they apparently don't actually play bunco anymore, they just drink wine and tell shoe shopping stories loudly!?)

Yeah i know what you mean by sharp, I ordered the updates but before they could get here I pulled the ewave CO for another project for a friend and his advents. I tried the Pie 4 for the sake of experimentation and the 2225H and DE 250 sound dynamic with that crossover. I have another set of 2225h and DE 250s that as soon as I get around to building some more cabinets for Im going to ewave and leave the two sets alone for a couple months till I figure out which I like better then Ill match them up. I also have a set of 2425h Id like to get in there somehow but thats on hold for the near future.

Your driver selection is almost identical to mine. 2225H, 2235H, 220 ti, DE 250,
and 2425H. I've played around with all these drivers on the E'wave, with the JBL wave guide as well as the Eminence H290 that Wayne uses. I need another set of boxes, either the same size as 4507, or a 4PI box. As an aside, I found that Altec 802 8G on the eminence H290 to be a surprising good combination.

Other ideas include taking a set of 2123H I have on hand and attaching that to Wayne's mid horn, as soon as he's selling the flat packs again.

There are numerous woofers which would make great EconoWave matches. The Eminence Beta 12A-2 may be one of them. Eminence is a very large speaker manufacturer who obviously knows their stuff. The spec's you listed indicate they have possibilities.

Try them and see. Let us know the results, and be sure to add pictures. We love pictures. And when you are through and happy, you can tell your admiring friends, "I built those myself." Good stuff!

Do you have any LE14/Santana porting advice you'd like to share?

Do you have any LE14/Santana porting advice you'd like to share?

According to my notes, the pair in the garage are tuned to roughly 34 Hz, with two 3 inch ports that are about 7 inches long. The ports are placed on the front panel, since they are placed pretty much up against the wall.

The computer speakers (avatar) are tuned the same , except the ports are out the back of the cabinet.

Let us know what tuning you prefer when you try them out. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the kind words you guys. The article and video are my first experiences on the public side of Wired Magazine and Wired.com. I couldn't have done it without your help! Thanks for developing a fun and rewarding DIY project for the world to build. :beerchug:

I was up north Michigan a week ago and a good friend of mine asked that I/we build a pair of speakers......so, now I will start the American Monitor eWave project.
