Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

PE ran out of one of the inductors i needed for 8 ohms version of xo. so i got the Erse Super Q 1.5mH 16 AWG 500W inductor. what i didn't expect was the size of them.....they're huge. i hope they work as good as the other if not better...

heh. Imagine my surprise, sittin' on a plane en route to Charlotte, NC this morning, reading my latest copy of Make magazine... what should I espy but an article by Bauhausler on the titular heroes of this thread! Pretty durn cool.

I imagine this is old news to you all, but it was a surprise (and a pleasant one) to me!

Now I am thinking that... maybe... that pair of Utility Advents in the basement... hmm...

Thx. Zilch broke the news a few days ago. We've been sitting on this news since June.
I added some detail to the article in the online comments. I only had 4 pages so a lot of context and background got left out to make room for build process. The comments section is a good opportunity for me to fill in more about Ewave.
I have no idea how much impact the article will have on potential speaker builders but it's a DIY audience that may not otherwise get exposed to much conventional home stereo stuff.
BTW, what did you think of the cat/toilet article?

Charlotte? Very nice town. I worked there for 9 months opening an OnStar call center. Flew in and out of Douglas 3 times a month to commute from DTW. I'm glad my job is only 8 miles from home now instead of 500.

Yes, those will work fine. At least one other eWaver has used them successfully.

They don't fit the PC board layout real well, but that's no biggie. ;)

Still lacking large Advents, I'm in process of gutting a pair of Advent/2 dihedral tweeter crapspeakers and have attacked the 1st with a keyhole saw. This'll make the 4th EW project and the first integrated build when ready, being as they are the best on-hand candidates of the prospect group for a finished build.
 
I've just aquired some large Electrohome cabinets that are all 1" stock and they are 3.7 cubic feet. What woofers have worked well in this size??

Talking about apples and apples reminded me that I went back to the B&C 12PS32 woofer. And it doesn't crossover like the DC300. So I disconnected the woofer, and look what the DE250 response looks like.

Wheres that darn bump? And that is without any capacitor for C3. The hi pass values are 1.1 mH and 3.5 uF.

Maybe Gordon DID put us on to good thing. A little more tweeking this afternoon might get us there..

Excellent! Guess that explains why the DE 250 wasnt responding to treatment!

Maybe The DE 250 isnt such a bad boy after all. Shoot, I'm still impressed with it in my system with <95 db crossover, with both resistors 16 ohms, L-pad set just past 12:00.

And you were totally correct about the two drivers being closer when mounted on the baffle. Right now. I have a LF (unmeasured) crossover of 900-1000 hz, it should be close as it is the JBL 4430 monitors LP cross over, with the same driver in similar box size and tuning. Right now, until Jack and Zilch announce the new and improved, Im using QSC waveguide and DE 250, C to C is about 13 inches...kind of far, but it is a large wave guide and 15 inch woofer. ( JBL 2235H ). Any idea where my Lobe is predicted to be, or more importantly maybe, not to be? I know this setup cant be perfect, but it is enjoyable!

I'm real pleased with the sound. They are still breaking in (about 16 hrs on them). Last weekend some friends and I escaped a baby shower and were listening to these for 3 to 4 hour runs w/o fatigue. After several hours I ran them up to 90db on my meter (briefly) without any bad noises. I'm running the pad at midway. Again, overall pleased. Haven't tried an extremely wide range of music on them yet.

For those following who weren't here for the baffle spacing/nulls discussion, remember that the forward lobe is the arc between nulls as you see in this pic.

That lobe can be pointed straight ahead, up or down. So "taller" is confusing, to me at least. Wider or narrower characterizing the arc is better I think.

The way I see it, the article and its context can only be good PR for the speakers, the designer(s), the author, and AK... and (as Martha says, or said before she was a felon) "that's a good thing" :-) Nice article; I'll check the on-line stuff anon.

Yes, I saw the kitteh-latrine article. When I was very young, my parents had a cat who used the toilet, as is, for a kitty latrine. Our current trio of lame-brain kittehs only will use them as drinking fountains.

The Charlotte area is OK by me; I am visiting my elderly father in Shelby (about 45 min SW of CTL).

I use "taller" and "shorter" so as to be clear the subject (or is it object?) is vertical.

['Course it isn't in Wayne's video. ;) ]

Maybe there's more precise words.... :dunno:
