Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Yes, I was a little more concerned than elated at this news. JBL's customer service these days is in the crapper compared to what it once was. I guess a price increase is coming as well, economy of scale notwithstanding....

Care to elaborate? I found that a 40uF 8 ohm zoebel and a .47mH choke did a pretty good job of damping the onset of breakup without overdamping. I tried pulling them last night to run the woofer wide open, and early listening seemed to be a little too bright for preference.

Update on Dayton 6.5" X 12" WG purchase from PE

I posted yesterday that I had changed my PE backorder for Pyle WGs to an order for the equivalent Daytons. The Daytons arrived before noon today by FedEx. Next day service to Detroit is typical for PE. These WGs look like the same product but with different graining on the waveguide surface. I'll get a Pyle from Kegger & compare them in detail, but I'm pretty sure they're equivalent.
Now I'm gonna clean up the flashing in the throat, screw in some D210Tis, drop them on the DQ-10s and listen to some music.

FWIW:

I'm taking my act on the road. Disappointed by the lack of Ewavers using the 2426, I'm going to toss together a set with D2500Ti. In addition to the Neo magnet, it's got a shorting ring in the motor, and according to selenium, better sensitivity on a horn (though that may be just the slight top octave rise we see on their spec sheets vs. the 220ti).

Anyway, expect to see some work with 2500.

I think we already have, or some other neodium mag version. Zilch was doing this if I remember correctly?

Two way, a little larger in size than the ULA's. Here is a pic...

So are you going for it with the Marantz speakers?

I've always gotten good service from them before but this time they slipped up. I ordered 4 Pyle PH612 WGs from them on 5/8 and they were to ship on 5/21. When they didn't come I checked and they were then backordered to 6/25. I just checked again and now the backorder has been changed to 7/24. I received no notice at any point that the merch, which is already paid for, would not ship. I just called and cancelled the backorder. I figure if they're going to move the date back a month every month they just aren't coming. I ordered the Dayton 270-318 instead. This is supposed to be equivalent. We'll see. If there are problems they'll go back. I'm not happy with their communication or service in this case and I let them know.

So far I've had pretty good luck with PE. A missed item once, that's about it. Unfortunately it seems the days of "the customer is always right" has gone by the wayside, with customer service right behind. Most business seem to have an attitude that you are lucky they are even talking to you.
One bright exception seems to be Digikey. They are always polite and offer excellent customer service on even the tiniest order. My last order had 3 watt 1 ohm resistor, somehow the dot between 1 and 0 got dropped, or I didnt give it to them, and I got a 10. They were all apologetic and getting ready to issue a refund on a 51 cent resistor! I didnt want that, just to order the 1 ohm version and 2 221k 1/4 watt resistors I had left off the order. A total of 1.53, to be sent in a padded envelope first class mail. i was treated the same way when I placed the original large order as I was with this small one. I apologized for wasting their time, and I was assured that this is far from the smallest order people have made! Refreshing to say the least.

I think there are a few using the 2226H driver, I used the 2225H for a while as well. People are using all sorts of drivers here, some more popular than others.
You may want to check out what Wayne has to say on them, that's the driver he uses in the premium version of the 4PI loudspeaker, a similar design to the E'wave. It uses the B&C driver on an Eminence guide/horn, same sort of compensation as E'wave on the HF. He'll shoot you the crossover if you ask, and more. His "Crossover Document" is a great read!

PE said on the phone that they send out emails on back orders when they're over 30 days old but I didn't get one. Their other emails do get through. I suppose that's a sensible policy if it works.

These waveguides are fine. I'm using them now with D210Tis (I have a box of them) and Advent woofers in DQ-10 cabs with the original low sensitivity Ewave crossover from back so many pages ago.

I'm resisting finishing these speakers because then my boss, who owns my second ewaved OLAs from teh magazine article, will 'borrow' them and I'll have to find something else to listen to.

I've been working on tube amp stuff instead of speakers lately because:
1) I'm working out a new topology and it's very time consuming
2) I have a torn tendon in my arm & lifting speakers is hazardous.
3) my wife works at home now so I can't 'test' (blast) speakers all day like I used to. My usual music system now is my (magazine article!) chip amp prototype and a pair of JBL Control 1 speakers on my desk. Not bad, but not Ewave!

array ewave update

Here's a picture of the new layout of the baffle. As you can see, I got my router and spent a lot of time over the weekend making sawdust -- plunge routersw are just too fun to use, I think bevelled edges and holes may start to appear all over the house from here on.

No measurements yet, still lots of crossover work to do. I'm just now setting up to get some data files on impedance and driver response so I can work on it via computer rather than by rubbing physical inductors and capacitors together. I did rewire the woofs so that only the upper row plays in the crossover region and down to about 400Hz, fed the second two through a big inductor. That also gives a nice Baffles Step Compensation. I listened with and without BSC (using the stock ewave crossover ckt) and am pretty sure I like with-BSC a lot better the way I'd place the speakers, even if I do lose 6dB of sensitivity doing that.

After the crossover comes the decision of whether to veneer the boxes, or to use melamine, or vinyl, or even just paint. Or even leave them as it (the boxes look pretty nice just bare, after sanding and after the baffle was pulled forward about 3/4 inch). Any suggestions on finish?

I'm thinking about entering these in PE's Midwest Audio Fest DIY speaker competition. Just to make sure there's an ewave there making an appearance. If nothing else, I get a free t-shirt and spend a day listening to other speakers too....

It occurred to me after doing all the baffle work that I might have set the whole things sideways with the guide on top and ports to either side, and then with the four woofs in a row along the bottom. With only the middle two playing above ~800Hz. That might allow the outer ones to bring in some directivity control to lower frequencies. Maybe I'll try that later on.

Fantastic! Are the cone drivers mounted behind the baffle?

It looks very nice.

Looking forward to measurements and listening impressions.
How's the LF?

Yup. Since the small drivers aren't very deep I wanted to give the voice coils a fighting chance to at least imagine they were near the same plane as he compression driver. :nerd:

LF seems pretty good on short listen. Not as deep as I'm used to for the REALLY low notes but I normally listen with subs, and these ewaves will probably be used with subs eventually too. Certainly respectable for R&R and jazz without the subs. About the same moving area as a 10-incher in total.
