Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

With BB6P, I generally find the actual tuning comes out a bit lower than the sim predicts. Measuring that accurately requires impedance data both ported and closed.

After measuring the installation I ended up with 29.59Hz according to BB6, it's all done so I hope it works out with the drivers. What will I hear if it is tuned below the Fs of the LE14? I did make it so I can adjust the opening with not too much trouble if I need to.
 
Hmmm.....I definitely prefer punch over flabby. We'll see how they sound. Like I said I purposely made the port alteration from the original one that can be adjusted without too much pain.

I wonder how long before the wavequide (horn) haters start to chime in? I joined AK just because of THIS thread. I bought 8 of these drivers 2 weeks ago on the day PE dropped the price. The plan for my Ewaves is a TMM tower with 2 of these, maybe 2.5way, and a JBL 8in WG w/ D220Ti ( 1.5 cu ft ). Also eventually a Center Channel with 2 of these 6.5's w/ 6in JBL WG. I've accumulated most of the parts now and can't wait to get started. Funny how so many things can get in your way when you're retired, both for time and financially. I will, no doubt, be looking here for assistance soon. Thanks JK

Disappointments with EWave designs are few and far between, it should work out great.:thmbsp:

If you edit your profile to include your location, someone close by may be able to let you listen to their EWaves, or provide parts, or, well you never know...
 
seeburg woofs for an ewave?

Hey folks, I continue my search for a good set of woofers for an ewave. I was given a set of woofers from a seeburg juke box. Here are the TSP's and a frequency graph as measured. The woofer was measured sitting on a stool, no box. I can't really comment more than that as it was given to me by a fellow ak'er. He did the measuring.

So what do you think? The graph show about +/- 10db from 30hz to 2k.

I would think putting it in a box wood really flatten out the lows a bit - improve them.

I question the 4 cubic ft Vas, but was told the seeburgs used two woofers in an 8 cubic ft box. So I assume this is correct.

Well, looks like I'm going to be building "Dirt-Cheep-O-Waves".

We need a quick-and-dirty portable vocal/background music PA for AWA... I'm going to build a rolling rack, which will contain an amp, a CD player, a mixer, and a bay-space for two moderate size speaker cabinets inside. The speakers will be removable for deployment.

As for the speakers- I've got a set of four Bose 601 8" woofers... which should be just fine for this. For highs, I'm planning to use the PH612 waveguide, with a Goldwood GT400CD piezo 1" throat horn driver. Total cost of waveguide AND driver is less than $16 per cabinet! Cabinet will be roughly 2 cubic feet internal volume... which is right about what the original Bose 601 cabinet had for the woofer section.

I will experiment with Pi-style compensation filters for the piezo... I will simply tie a parallel resistor with the driver, to create a relatively "flat" impedance, then add crossover/shelving as needed. I expect I may be able to get away with simply the RC filter and maybe a simple first-order (cap) crossover... but we will see...

Gotta at least get the woofers into some sort of baffle, for FR testing.

I've used a 4x8 sheet of plywood, with a hole cut in the center for the woofer, for quick-and-dirty FR measurements. With the mic about a foot-and-a-half in front of the woofer, you should be able to get something pretty reliable down to about 200 Hz or so. Helps also if you are outside... that keeps reflections from the rear of the woofer from getting back to the mic.

okay, I havea couple of 4 cubic foot barzilay cabinets. I'll throw them in there and take a measurement. Will that work? Should I tune the cabinet or keep it sealed for the measurment?

Edit: what I liked about the measurement is it showed it will go to well above the 1.2k and also it seems to get really low too.

Diameter with foam is 7 1/2".
Diameter of frame is 9 1/2".
Center of bottom left screwhole to center of bottom right screwhole is 6 3/4". Center of top left screwhole to bottom right screwhole is 9 3/4".

I just re-foamed 8 of those and have one here. That's way too small. Is it a Smaller Advent Masonite woofer perhaps instead?

I'm sure lots of people are interested in your findings, Gordon. Dirt Cheep is hard to ignore. :D I introduced the idea of a screw-on piezo for the waveguide a while back and no one took the bait. :withstpd:

Bauhausler, thanks for the info on those. BTW, where do you get most of OLA woofers? Appreciate the help.

6 of these were from DQ-10s and DQ-20s. 2 were from Utility OLAs I bought locally. The woofers turn up on That Auction Site from time to time. I've never done instrumented testing on response but I like the way they sound.

I loaded a pair back into some stock DQ-10s for a listen. They're nice and I see why people like them but I still prefer the 2-way Ewave with this woofer. YMMV.
 
I think I have to agree with you Bauhausler. I've been working with those Advent Maestros finally and the woofers in those (same as used in newer Advent 2ways) are quite impressive. It's easy to see how they got away with using these without a lowpass crossover, the response rolls off surprisingly smoothly, with no visible trace of breakup. Sound smooth, too, and work in their cabinet with a textbook sealed response. I wonder if there are any off-the-shelf woofers that behave this nicely?

These new Maestro Ewaves (matched with QSC 152 and D220ti bolt-ons) may turn out to be my favorite speakers. I'm still trimming on the crossovers a little and need to readjust the subs to work with them.
