Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

PR in the rear is probably the best compromise. You can then match the original cabinet size (to a reasonably close degree) and be pretty assured that the woofer will work pretty much the same as the original cabinet...

Gordon.

Thx. I was hoping for a solution where I didn't have to cut another big hole but I can go that route. I have some nicely refinished OLA cabs that are the right size & the new baffles are already cut.

I assume there is an optimal positioning of the PR on the back surface. I have some room to play with. What should I avoid as far as positions?

UP-DATE: Almost-sort-of-maybe-kind-of eWave experiment. Cable Guy's nasty ass EVs.

Bill brought over these EV Sentry IIs just to recap them and mount the PHT416 horn and compression driver in place of the EV T35. Well, one Saturday has turned into three but next Saturday will be listening day. I thought these horns were just some kind of horn and not WGs. But after recaping and mounting one horn, we listen to them and the highs were missing. I did research on the horns and they are indeed wave guides and have the roll off associated with them. So we experimented.

Link to the horn and CD. http://www.paudiothailand.com/pdf/products/PHT-416.pdf

Here are what the cabs and baffle boards looked like when we first stated working on them.

Here is the BB with the new horn. That is an 8x8x8" port. the boards were in good shape but nasty.

Here is Cable Guy (Bill) stripping the cabs.

Here is my totally chaotic but functional crossovers

Here is a pic of the origanal crossover, which we recapped without change and after listening to them, we could immediatly tell they needed the comp. So we just added the CD comp section from the origanal eWave project.....untry and untested and by gum, they worked.

I've painted the baffle boards with Hammer Tone as Bill wants it to all hang out.

I am on my third application of Tung Oil and they are really looking sharp. Will post more pix when complete.

My effort at the profile of the phase plug was a S.W.A.G. Cylindrical until out of the voice coil, then rounded over to a point...shaped by eye and not by ear :scratch2: I did go to school on others I had seen, such as the RS series from Dayton.

I like the lift under your chaotic x-overs. I hope to have one before my back goes out...

Thanks Ed. Yep the lift is nice. My bike weight 1422lbs and the lift can barely lift it. But it is good for everything else.

Wayne's not the only smart guy who's noticed the directivity "advantage" of 15" woofers, sometimes, in applications like this. Tomlinson Holman of THX is another... the original THX systems were designed, as I've mentioned before in various places, to use the collapsing dispersion (of DUAL 15" stacked woofers, in the original THX system) of the woofers to match the dispersion of the mid/high horn. In Holman's case, he used stacked woofers to give a roughly 90x45 pattern (narrower vertically, due to the stacked woofers), at around 800-1000 Hz (IIRC)... and he published quite a bit of data, to show it did pretty much what he expected it to do...

Regards,
Gordon.

Much better said! I love the 15 inch E'wave.

I agree with everything you've said here Russ, but the crop of 15" drivers capable of this level of performance are limited, and not exactly "Econo" if you know what i mean.

2225H can be had for fairly cheap. Works great in 5 cu ft at 40 hz. Most of the Pro 15 inchers are a little more, but patience can turn up inexpensive (comparatively) drivers. I found ( with the help of Zilch) a pair of 4647 boxes with 2225H in killer condition for 300 the pair. 200 in wave guide parts for 500 total for a PAIR. Pretty econo in my book!

Okay, one more question on PRs

I read the FAQ on passives stickied to the Speakers forum. It was very informative. One thing that it leaves out is placement. I assume that there are better and worse positions for the relative placement of the woofer and the passive. The woofer will be on the front, about 2/3 of the way up the cabinet. The passive will be on the back. Should it be right behind the woofer? Lower down? does it not matter?

I have been looking at the RCF 15" type from PE. They do look very impressive to me and some compare quite well with the JBL 2226 model!!.

Two of my RCF favorites from PE are the 294-868 and the 294-874. Look at the spec on those and I think you might well be impressed.

Ok, only one more reply, then back to eWaves. It is a Continential 4 cylender flat head out of a Fork Lift, or HiLo, or Lift Truck....depending on what part of the country you are from.

All I know about PRs is what I had in the ESS AMTs. The PR was directly behind the woofer, and, was the same size as the woofer. I put them up against the wall to see if that would have much of an effect (actually 5" from the wall) and I did not really discern a noticable difference. I'm sure if I had some measuring eqipment, I could see the diff on it, but to my ear, it sounded just like any other speaker you put up to the wall or moved it out. More bass and a little less dynamic, but still good.
