Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

What size cab do you have? The "eWave" crossover that has been developed by these good folks is kind of the heart and soul of this project. If you use all the eWave parts matted with a solid woof, you'll be good. The Dayton 12" woof is a good one as is the Advent or JBL woofs.

Kind of depends on your budget and what you have already for a cab as that is a factor in the woof you use.

Woofer selection question...

I moved to a new house and had to break up my big corner bass horns since I no longer have corners, my old timer ex-proffesional speaker builder buddy offered me a pair of rosewood cabinets for 15" that I thought would be perfect for doing an econowave project. I just need to decide on which woofers to use;

I have a pair of old cerwin 15s from their top of the line 380SE with accordian surround and if you believe the literature 102 dB at 1W/1M! Is that too efficient for the econowave crossovers as designed? Also they're 4 ohm so would need to tweak the crossover there as well. I have fond memories of these in their original cabinets, and in the folded corner horns they were the best I've ever heard.

I also have a brand new pair of Pioneer 15" that fit the same size cabinet (5.5 CuFt.) that are 8 ohm but only 96 dB 1W/1M.

I'd like to go with max efficiency; will the econowave do an easy 102 dB as designed with the hi-eff cross over? What tweaks for a 4 ohm woofer?

I'll try both woofers out but need to know how to set up for 102 dB and 4 ohm so I can A/B.

The bigger question is will either 15 behave nicely up through 2000 Hz? Got any response curves? Were either of them used in a 2-way design?

Not sure what you have to tweak to get high efficiency and 4 ohm load...compare them to the standard 8 ohm and you can probably figure it out.

A 102 dB efficiency woofer is really pushing the eWave to the limit. I think 100 is the official limit though you should get 2 extra dB by upgrading to the D2500Ti over the D220Ti.

Gordon, any updates regarding D2500 vs. DE250?

I compared D220Ti with DE250 (different waveguides) and clearly the D220Ti is very harsh compared to DE250.

I was wondering if I can upgrade to D2500 with comparable DE250 quality. Otherwise more $$ is needed :drool:

Maybe it does not have to be that way. The quality of compression chamber of the driver makes the difference, in my opinion. With B&C DE250 and Selenium d2500ti, rear chamber is made of aluminium. With d220ti that is not the case. Plastic is the material factory used. It does not come cheap without some drawbacks.

Compression chamber resonates and gives that harsh noise. I've listened one modified pair of d220ti and i can say that it sounds great to me (don't want to generalize).

Here's few pictures of it. The material used is 2 component epoxy resin inside, and liquid foam in spray (don't know it's real name in English) on the ouside part of the chamber. There are few pieces of cloth (i don't know of what sort) to dampen the chamber. Sound is very smooth :)

For any UK/Euro econowave builders, who can't get Pyle, JBL or Selenium parts as they're unobtainable over here and shipping from PE in the US costs a small fortune...

Celestion CDX1-1425 is available from Lean Business for £25 each, bargain. QSC dealers can source the HPR122i waveguide, part SP-000106-GP or PL-000722-TS. Shop around though as I've found variations of £20 between dealers. West End DJ in London are the cheapest so far at £10 each, but ask for it to be included in the next shipment so you don't have to pay £5 P&P each for it to get to the dealer. Takes a bit longer but it saves money...all in the name of the Econo bit of the project!

So you get a pair of waveguides + drivers for £70 total, very reasonable. Zilch used that combination in the Delite econowave with good results apparently:

Blue Aran stock the P Audio PH220, which appears to be a better made cast alu clone of the RCF H100, as used by a few intrepid E'wavers. Zilch hasn't tested it though. More expensive but it sounds promising as it has a lower cutoff frequency and still maintains constant directivity.

As for me, I'm using the CDX1-1425 on the QSC waveguide with a Beyma 8BR40 in a sealed enclosure. When the woofers get here I'll be finally able to start building...
