Hi guys.
It's been a while since i've started making my ewg speakers. Deltalite II 2512/Pyle+d220ti combination.
Today i ran into some problems during the testing of the xover generated by PCD. Since i don't have measuring equipment yet, that was the only way to go and make xover that fits these drivers.
On the Deltalite there was 12dB/o (3mH+18uF) and 12dB/o for d220ti (8.2uF+1.2mH). Since there is peak on 2KHz (selenium generates it) i've been forced to put series RLC circuit to flatten it. I did fixed L-pad with Visaton MOX resistors.
If PCD is to be trusted, i've succeeded to get the +/-1.5 dB across the spectar 300Hz-18KHz. Maybe that's the case but i dont know and i can't check for myself.
So the FR graph was perfect. The sound..... was awful. Mids and highs did not exist at all, just bass. You could actually hear when the midbas stops and where the tweeter begins to take over. The image was very muddy. I was very dissapointed but i don't give up easily.
I opened PCD again and tryed to make xover with less inductivity and more capacitance. So, after few attempts i thought i did it (so to speak). 12dB/o for Deltalite but this time 1.2mH+27uF and for d220ti xover was 8.2uF+1.2mH but i got rid of the RLC filter and heavy atenuation was not needed because the sensitivity of midbas was now around 96dB. L-pad for it was now 3ohm series (there is 4.4uF in parallel with this resistor) and 3ohm parallel with tweeter.
The sound improved very much. Speakers could finally breathe with ease. I don't know its real FR graph but i will call a friend of mine that has equipment and measure it.
Music, i tested the speakers with, is:
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Beautiful World
Chesky records - Ultimate Demonstration Disc
Bohren & der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission
Now, the PCD is showing relatively flat response in both cases but two totally different sounds from same speaker units ? What's the catch ?
