Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Yall have been building some great looking speakers. Is time I give it a try. I am thinking about the DeltaLite II 2512 and Selenium D220Ti on Parts Express' QSC PL-000446GP. Tom Mcnally over at diytube.com is building me a three channel RH84 amp should have about 4 watts. So I need to build three speakers for the amp. I know 4 watts that's why I am leaning towards the DeltaLite II 2512 and the reason for the D220Ti is that they are $80.00 chepper than DE250 x3 saving me $240. I appreciate any thoughts. Brian

Sounds like a plan... Was there a crossover worked out for that combo?

Just remember to order the bolt-on version of the D220Ti to fit the QSC, not the thread-on version.

Here's the xover on TechTalk that can be used as starting point for it:

I don't think Zilch got around to building that version of the Econowave, Brian. perhaps someone else here on AK has built the bolt on D220ti/QSC combo?

From AVS Forum:

If you want to lowball it further, put the bolt-on D220Ti on the QSC. No, I don't know what crossover might work with that, but I'll be trying it soon.

Alternatively, use the thread-on D220Ti and the standard econo waveguide with the high-efficency variant of the eWave crossover, and adjust the lowpass for whatever high-efficiency woofer you choose. No, I haven't done that, either, though I have been asked by others to do similar.

Much of this is unexplored territory using an unfamiliar paradigm; there are many builders experimenting with it. The concepts are proven sound, but there is no cookbook solution for every application and budget as yet. Bottom line -- it's DIY, after all....

Greetings all. With help from Jack I have assembled and have operating a set of Radio Shack Monitor 8b econowaves. Specs are baseline across the board, wave guide is the Pyle JBL knockoff that Jack used in his conversion (I want to say 6.5" x 12"?), tweeter driver d220ti, crossover bone stock econowave standard on the zilchlab PCB's (thanks Wiredbecker!). Sounds phenomenal and the stock Nova 8b drivers have bass in spades, doesn't seem to be much need for a sub. Dispersion pattern is quite wide, sweet spot is huge. The only painful issue was cutting the baffle to accommodate the horn while removing the 3 tweet/midranges that appear in a triangular formation on a Nova 8b. Add me to the list of completed econowavers! I will post pics as soon as the wood putty is sanded and the baffles are painted, don't want to post a pic until they are pretty. I also have not yet cut the stock crosshatched grill's backing in the shape of the horn.

I Ewaved some Advent Maestro cabinets using QSC and bolt-on D220ti, crossed at around 1200Hz. Worked very nicely.

Congrates. Yes do post pix.

While I am grateful for the nomination, I merely aspire to Zilch's level of participation and development at this point. I need to get the Zilchlab set up properly, learn to measure speakers and post the accompanying data. Not to mention, make more Econowaves!

In short, I'm not quite there... but I'm trying!

Howdy!

After weeks of reading and thinking and digesting and learning.....

Hats off to Zilch, Jack, and Wayne and the rest of you guys!

I recently got a set of New Advent Loudspeakers. I like the bass! The highs weren't perfect for me, and I LOVE messing around with speakers. I don't have room for woodworking projects so I do alot of redrivering.

I've been on AK for over a year and was wondering what the whole EW thing was about. Then I got that it was just what I have been looking for! A mid/high module that works!

Well once that cog turned in my head I was casting about looking at all my speakers and thinking of EW mods! The Advents were on the list, along with my Pioneer HPM-40s.

The price of the Selenium drivers was kindof keeping me at the 'thinking about it' stage... I'm brutally cheap, and poor at the moment.

Then last week I scored a set of Selenium DH200s with HM17-25 horns from ebay for like 40 bucks shipped. Yes, basically half price even though it's not the right parts. I checked all the docs and it looks like I was giving up about 5dB sensitivity, and the top octave response. But that price it was doable, and the lesson would surely be worth it.

They arrived today! My Advents have some bad resistors in them so the tweeters only work on the enhanced position of the switch, so it is easy to disable the tweeters.

I put the horns on top and rummaged thru my junkbox and came up with some resistors and capacitors to make the HF portion of the EW xover.

Sh***yit!

Now I used the wrong driver, the wrong horn and obviously underated components. And it sounds REAL.

Placing my PE order now to get the right stuff....

To sum up the important things I learned from Zilch and this thread:
1- the new waveguides are high tech and make this all possible.
2- the CD compensation in the xover is the key to getting the flat response.
3- this gives life to many speakers that would otherwise be junked.
4- EVERYBODY should do this!

I warn you though, it sounds so good you will want to turn it up! I've found the Advent's limits and am now seriously considering doing this to my much modified HPM-150s with Heils.

edit: I forgot to mention. I was the anti-horn guy. This totally changed my tune!

Thanks for sharing your experiences DC! If you think it's good now, just wait until you get your actual Econowaves up and running.

wiredbecker suggested I post the dh200 driver pdf.

I don't want to derail the thread, and this is only germane because I scored the dH200s cheap. The top octave is where it appears to roll off, but I'm probably not missing much.

When I get it all done correctly I'll post some response curves.

Hmm, there's an impedance spike and sharp phase angle right at the crossover point on that horn - that could get weird, no? Also, is it just me or is it super weird that they published asymmetric horizontal polar responses? Anyway, with the usual crossover topology, it looks like you could get that treble pretty flat with a little rise in the extreme HF if you wanted, except for that 10k notch... It would be interesting to see what you get on one of the usual CD waveguides.

All those curves seem to be on their horn, which will have a lot of effect, can't tell what the driver itself does. I wouldn't sweat the impedance peak the L-Pad will hide most of it from the crossover. The low-end isn't very encouraging, but maybe that's the horn again.

Hey, before I start ordering crossover parts, can I just confirm that the schematic below is the one people are using with LE14A woofers, per this post? Thanks for any input.
