Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekends

Totally....

zu-speakers-maple.jpg

Just boxed my Dirty Weekends up and will store them in a spare bedroom closet, My son will be home in a few weeks from the Air Force after 13 years of being away from home and we will give him my music room which is the bonus room over the garage. It's going to be fun to get him home and it is a small sacrifice and one day I will break them out and say WOW ! Not going to sell them because I upgraded the old Druid drivers to Soul Supreme Drivers with the Clarity Caps and Keep in mine I bought mine with used drivers around 2014 for $800 used with the walnut finish which was a upgrade and then ordered the Soul Driver Kit and changed them out and have been ever so happy. When he gets on his feet good and says hey dad I'm moving out then I will set my music room back up. But until then he can have my bonus room which has it's own entrance and set up like a small apartment. Just HAPPY to get him home.

Into day four of the DW-6 sale and it's still open. Considering it's up to 2K to get a finish that isn't black ( I still prefer a wood finish, but maybe that's because I'm just short of being a fossil) the competition is a bit stiffer. I still like my Omen DWs, but my next speakers are going in a different direction.

Back when DWs were $1,000 batches sold out in a day or two at most. The number of willing buyers thins out considerably with Zu's new strategy of moving upmarket.

Having owned DW’s twice. I always thought I would get another pair down the line. I am a fan of the brand and the speaker. But I am seriously confused by this iteration and am wondering if this is truly a speaker in the same spirit as the DW. I may be wrong, but I do not get the same sense of value from the 6 as I did the DW. Just my opinion…

You have demonstrated your dire lack of knowledge in the LSR's thread, and I have no reason to engage with you further. With regards to my 2 posts, as a new member I have to start somewhere, it does not make me a troll.

The Zu's just happened to be my latest acquisition and coincided with my membership to the forum.
I think using my avatar without permission DOES make you a troll! My photo, my gear; you are an arse.

Looks like HiFiJames stopped posting August of 2021. Pretty creepy that he decided to start using my avatar in a thread that I was also posting in.

It appears HiFiJames took exception to something HiFiJeff said on the LSR thread.
He copied tuberadios69's avatar, HiFiJeff's name format, and decided to crap on this thread. Not particularly original.

Yesterday I drug out my 813 monoblocks and put them in the system for the first time.
Holy smokes, the speakers have come alive with those amps.
40 watts per channel of single ended power makes these sound much larger than they are with dynamics that are amazing.

I been around 4, 6, 8, 14, 18, 22, 32, 40, 50 watts hifi tube amp. I ran the DW and other similar high sensitivity input speaker on 8 watts 300b. No matter how high the input sensitivity is, the speakers will not show its optimum performance on low watt amps. The speakers are not reaching the linear travel sweet spot that gives you the crunch satisfaction. Otherwise the result is "underpowered or loose bass." If you wanna get the fullest of that 10 inch DW, you need to drive it atleast 35 and up watts tube power. (just like your amp)
That's why a lot of people are in a quest for the holy grail speaker. Sometimes its the amp too.
Very easy to acquire more power in solid state and can make those speakers sing.

We usually run a Luxman L550ax
It sounds great but does not immediately command one’s attention as the 813 amps which is interesting as the Luxman is Class A biased also.
Both amps are operated well below clipping.

Watts in reserve mean little. With the DW's you can reach a good listening level with a fraction of that all important first watt.

I always say, trust your ears.

Just curious, since we are discussing tube amps with DWs, what tap do you use since the DW are 12 ohm and most tube amps have 8 and 16 ohm taps. Ive been using mine with the loading resistor that brings the speaker down to an 8 ohm load. Im open to hearing what options other DW owners choose.

I have a nice Perreaux 100 watt MosFet amp and its great for powering lots of different speakers and music preference. If I use a speaker anywhere "mostly" 8 inch and above, its totally different driving it with this mono blocks that has a switchable 34 to 50 watts favorable at almost any given speakers. I love my monster tone 300b 14watts but honestly I cant compare the listening satisfaction between the two.

You should try both and go with the one that sounds best.
