SX-1010 won't Power On...

Once more, I am listing the parts I have for the PA boards. I remember ordering 1-2 extra of some of them:

Q11 512-KSC1845EBU (120v .05a .5w 100mhz 150-800hfe)
Quantity:6 (2 Extras)

Q8 512-KSA1220AYS (160 1.2a 20w 155mhz 35-320hfe)
Quantity: 6 (2 Extras)

Q12 512-KSA992FBU (120v .05a .5w 100mhz 150-800hfe)
Quantity:12 (2 Extras)

Q5 & Q6 512-KSC2310YBU (150v .05a .8w 100mhz 40-240hfe)
Quantity: 14 (2 Extras)

Q10 512-KSA940TU_Q (150v 1.5a 25w 4mhz 40-140hfe)
Quantity: 4 (2 Extras)

C1 5989-100V .68-F (0.068uf 100V)
Quantity: 2

C4 647-UPW1V100MDD (10uf 35v)
Quantity: 2

Q4 512-KSA910YSHTA replacement for 512-KSA910YBU (150v .05a .8w 100mhz 40-240hfe)
Quantity: 6 (2 Extras)

Q7 512-KSC2690AYS (160 1.2a 20w 155mhz 35-320hfe)
Quantity: 4 (2 Extras)

Q9 512-KSC2073TU (150v 1.5a 25w 4mhz 40-140hfe)
Quantity: 4 (2 Extras)

That is ALL i have at hand. The extras are shown in Red. I have absolutely NO idea why I ordered the exact number of C1 and C4 needed. I should have ordered at least 4-5 extra of each. Would have made only a few bucks difference and shipping would be the same.

edit: I dug up 2 extra 512-1n4004 conventional rectifier (1a 400v )

Q4 2sb507 to-220 bce , use one of your extra:
one 512-KSA940TU_Q pnp to-220 bce 150v 1.5a 25w 4mhz 40-140hfe $0.54

OK, you have an extra a940 or so...

Q5 Q6 2sa628 to-92 BCE 25v .1a .15w 100mhz 800hfe , I would recommend:
two 512-KSA1013YBU to-92 ecb 160v 1a .9w 50mhz 160-320hfe $0.17 ea
BUT.....
Hmmm, no a1013,

Q5 darlington driver 2sa628 BCE, use one of your extra:
512-KSA1220AYS to-126 ecb 160 1.2a 20w 155mhz 35-320hfe $0.39

Q6 feedback 2sa628 BCE, use one of your extra:
512-KSA992FBU (ln)to-92 ecb 120v .05a .5w 100mhz 150-800hfe $0.05 ea This is changed to 992, more gain....

The other parts will have to wait...
D9: wz-320
512-1N5257B Fairchild 33 V, 0.5W zener $0.05 ea

C11 100uf (63v) 100v 647-UPW2A101MHD $0.87 ea
C13 100uf (35v) 63v 647-UPW1J101MPD1TD $0.37 ea

Go to D9 on the board, the opposite lead from the band on the diode and measure the voltage, it should be 32 volts but if it isn't it isn't a disaster, it could be starved for current by the defective regulator.

edit:

changed the ksa910 to ksa992, for more gain.

I am ordering the whole shebang for the Power Supply Board, everything discussed in ZeroJunk's tread. I am quite tired of looking for a specific culprit. I want to rebuild the whole thing.

While I kept the quantities of the can shaped film capacitors at exact, I added +3 on each transistor (including the extras I already have), zener diode and metal film resistor. They seem to be much more in demand than the film capacitors. Should I order 1 extra for each film capacitor or leave it be? There might be other boards that share the same capacitors and it would be a good idea just to have a spare on the side just like the extra 512-KSA940TU_Q or 512-KSA1220AYS I have right now. And the extra parts you mentioned for D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7... Could you be more specific, I can't seem to figure out what they are. Are they all 512-1n4004 conventional rectifiers (1a 400v )??

I need to know if there are other parts that I MAY be required to order in the future (anything that is possible) so that I can add it to the list. That lowers the shipping expenses and saves us lots of time eliminating the wait period between each order. Now I have to wait anoter 3 weeks for the damn parts just as I was getting used to this. No reflection on you Mark.

Planning to make your board look like this? :D Just messin'. ;)

Measured D9, you ready? It is 11.8 Volts.

Can you read the diode number? It is DEFINITELY NOT ORIGINAL!! Those purple wires going to the yellow capacitors are going to be gone as soon you recap. Plus with smaller cap, it'll breathe better.

Whoever that moron before you was working on it taking shortcuts bringing it to the current condition. :thumbsdn:

One day when I leave this receiver to my daughter and she opens her up (if she has interest in vintage equipment and the unit actually survives to that day) I hope she doesn't say "The moron that worked on this unit last ..." :D

Hmmm, go nuts on parts eh?
We already have the protection stuff, and most of the power amp stuff, that leaves the equalizer (phono) amp, muting circuit assembly, control amp, and (very careful here....) tuner.

Yes, D1 through D7 are 1n4004's.

We have all the Power Amp stuff, except:
C8 647-UPW0J331MED 330uf 6v for amp $0.24 one per amp, two total.
D1 D2 1s2473, D3 D4 1s2472 all eight total (or more): 512-1N4148 Diodes - Small Signal 100V Io/200mA $0.03 ea
D7 D8 1s1885 four uf4004 per amp 8 total 512-UF4004 ultra fast rectifier 1amp 400v $0.13 ea
d7 & d8 are the source of much discussion. they show up in some schematics, and on some boards. sometimes on old stuff they are single diodes, later stuff they are stv-3's - a neat solution to get three diode drops into two holes. two uf4004's per location are enough.

Equalizer amp, covers both channels:

This post is provisionally finished. I don't think there is anything to add, but may be proven wrong.

Alright, I will wait to ask any questions I have until the massive amount of work is done and everything is edited.

Mark, MARK... What'd you say I order the Tuner parts but we leave it alone? As I heard, it is extremely hard to work on (wrap-on wires limiting flexibility almost down to nothing) I never listen to FM/AM anyway and the parts will be there in case all else fails and we are certain that the Tuner is problematic. What do you say?

I have to get the list together. That's the delay. It really will just be caps, and a few audio transistors.

edit: list ready (i hope, i can't think of anything more right now) i'm beat, logging out and goodnight.

I know, I wasn't saying that I will go ahead and order the parts right now. I still will wait for yur Tuner parts list (NO rush) and order them too along with everything else. I am just saying that if we can get away with by recapping all but the tuner, I'd like to not touch the tuner.

I see that the list is done. I can't order it until this weekend or so anyway so if there is anything to add or take out, there is lots of time. While you were making the list, I was constantly monitoring the changes and have my cart saved at mouser.com, I will go over it a few more times and make sure I am not missing anything. Thank you again Mark, I owe you one. Wait... I owe you like 2,000. Cheers

I think that's a good course of action. Parts list is up. those 0.xx uf caps' cost bugs me, but it's either those or back to electrolytics - as I'm not sure how well ceramic disk caps will do in those positions.

Don't worry about the 0.xx uf caps. They have to be ordered don't they? Besides, how much difference will it make, $10-$12? Rather than going back to electrolytics (I don't have the slightest clue what that is but it sounds bad) I'd pay the difference.

I went through the list yet again. Everything seems pretty clear except a few notes in brackets:

Q8 512-KSC2682YSTU [180v .1a 1.2/8w 200mhz 100-320hfe] $0.31 (preferred, the current is below 0.1 amp)

C1,C2 647-UPW1H2R2MDD [2.2uf 50v] $0.14 (no lower voltage)

C15,C16,C31,C32,C23,C24,C39,C40 647-UPW1H4R7MDD [4.7uf 50v $0.14] (25v was $0.13)

C25,C26,C41,C42 647-UPW1V100MDD [10uf 35v] $0.11 (2 cents more to get 16v)

Can you please clearify those.
