Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Pair of Pioneer CS-99a's for $60. I found em on CL but they were in a clothing resale shop. I checked and see these go for alot more but one of the 15" woofers has been replaced with some other type. I'm almost afraid to take it out and look. So I dunno if it was a great deal but I like em. I really dig the look of lattice grille speakers for some reason.

Not in a thrift store but actually in my basement......A sony STR-7035.....Took a while to remember where it came from....turns out a friend was cleaning out some time ago and handed it over.....I wonder what else is down there.....

I didn't get this from thrift store/op shop, but from the local hard rubbish collection.

Sansui AU-101 and 2 interdyn 125 speakers.

A fantastic find, in my opinion, the system sounds fantastic and when i turn the bass all the way up with loudness on, the floor vibrates for an easy 3 metres around the system when the volume is on 3...

the only problem with the amp is the phones jack has broken at the neck, and hangs loose on the inside, but the outside still looks fine,

would anyone happen to know where i could find a replacement jack?

Hello, my first post ever on AK!!!

Best find I've ever come across was in a garden shed at a place I once rented.

It is a Sansui AU-222, I took it inside and waited for it to reach room temperature. It was about -20°C outside in the shed. Plugged it in, turned it on and voila, after sitting for maybe 10 years it works flawlessly. Still had it's original blue plastic wrap on the face of it. I asked the landlord and he didn't want it, so it was FREEEEEE and I am never getting rid of it.

Next best was at the local GW, some pristine Sansui SP-1200. I didn't know anything about them but I thought they'd go perfectly with my free Au-222. They were $8 for the pair. Everything about them is mint and they sound spectacular.

Not at a thrift store or anything, some guy I found on kijiji was selling old speakers so I went round there. He had loads of ones and he wanted rid of them all. I hummed and huhhed and mucked around which one's I would take. He said they are all junk speakers and I thought, hmmmm yeah, but I can make them good. Anyway, he said if you take them all for $50 they're yours. There was 7 sets of speakers, various brands including Sansui's, Videoton Diadem (Hungarian vintage ones) and some other unbranded ones, a complete Hitachi system (the model escapes me, it was a gold integrated amp, receiver, and tape deck), a Sony PS-X40 turntable, and a Technics SA-401 receiver.........all for $50. I sold the Hitachi system and recouped $30, so all the rest, which works perfectly for $20.

Picked up a Hewlett-Packard 410B VTVM today for $15 at the Council for the Blind store. It needs some work on the cables, but appears to be fully operational.

Worse comes to worse, it has two Amperex 12AU7s in it. Outside of one little cobweb, the inside is spotless (the outside nearly so). I think it probably has low hours.

Yesterday, $4.99 @GW got me a real nice CDP-507ESD with two of the TDA-1541 chips inside. Tray belt had to be replaced right away, otherwise perfect shape and v. GOOD sound!

I plan to mod the heck out of it.

A cool little Concept 2.0 receiver about an hour ago at Goodwill for $29.99. Weighs almost as much as the 4.5 I picked up in May. Near perfect shape with zero noise in the controls and the FM sounds great on a strong signal!

First find

Yesterday, stopped at GW on a whim, scored a Yamaha KX-230 cassette deck for $10. Tag said "as is" hoped it only needed a belt; works perfectly. I feel fortunate because thrift stores around here seem to only get silver face.

Picked up a PSB Century Subsonic 2i subwoofer at GW today...my first sub with a speaker cone larger than my 10" bookcase speakers...
....interestingly the previous owner had the speaker sitting on the floor upside down so he could read the inputs while peering over it...
I'm enjoying the thump...and the added bottom to the Polk R800i speakers I got last week...

We have what they call Swap Shop on a couple local radio:music: stations around my area . I try to get on everyweek, well it paid off today. I got a call around 2 pm today from a guy that listened to my add on swap Shop a few weeks ago he said . I specifically was looking for the Pioneer Spec gear 1 and 2 . He tells me he has a working and very clean set 1 and 2 so we made arrangements for me to got to house and check them out . It was a total of 75 miles round trip from my house to his . I got there and he was setting it up so i could see that it worked. And yes it works but i believe the controls need a good cleaning . The super good part to this story is that when we started talking money he told me he wanted $20.00 for the pre Spec1 and $30.00 for the Spec2:scratch2:. I couldnt wait to get them in the car:D but i kept my cool man it was hard . He also sold me a Technics SL-1300MK2 turntable for $ 20.00 very clean . Dust cover is almost perfect . I just received my Klipsch KV4 center channel today so i was already in a good mood now im just happy as all can be . ill wait till tomorrow to open them up and clean em a bit and see how good everything really works . this was simply to good to be true WOW:banana::music::banana::D oh ya and he gave me 3 Audio-technica isolating feet for the turntable couldnt find the 4th but oh well :thmbsp:

2001 Panasonic DVD-RP91 black $19.99 at GW. MSRP: $799.95 in 2001.
Spanking new looks, remote included. Reviewed in here.
I bought it for playing audio only.

Picture "borrowed" from Amazon.

This one plays DVD-Audio and has very good sound from regular CDs. It "remembers" last song like car CD players do. The only lame thing is "welcome to dvd world" scrolling on the display each time you turn it on and "bye" when off.

This week all I found, were a nice pair of Canton Plus S speakers, for a buck apiece. They look like minature cabinets of my Braun L810s. And a Kenwood Basic T 1 tuner, to go with my Basic M1A, $3.00.
