Kind of thing that give the 'high-end' a bad name.

you want good cd sound? you may have to clean the lens-I read an article 10 yrs ago about this-made a world of difference but you have to know what you are doing.
I don't understand paying a lot for digital-I mean, wouldn't a marantz cd player have a good enough build? If you want better sound get a good external DAC.
With analog it is (more) physical-you can see if a turntable is well made...

IMO, high end audio is out of control more then ever, with prices higher then ever, supported by all the audio rags. How is it that now days a $1000 CD player is "affordable", anyone can own it.

The fact is that even millionaires could not afford a high end system. Who would spend 1/10 of their wealth on a HiFi system? Anyone on a $50K annual income is robbing from the family to support a habit. High end is the drug, money it costs is the destroyer all for those precious little ears.
.

Knowledge trumps cash. A used phillips Dvd player you can get for $30 sounds about as good as those $1000 players. Used cds are $2 to $6 each. Good amps can be had for under $100. There are pretty good new speakers for a few hundred, or find some big old ones that wives tend not to like and get them for pennies on the dollar. your neighbor's bitchy wife can be your best leverage. I really like my neighbor's bitchy wife--$20 for 2 JBL L 100 t speakers.

I think that Hi end is more about being hi end than it is about sound quality. And those $20,000 components are mostly there to make the $5000 ones appear to be reasonable.

There has never been a better time to get great sound at low cost.

not a very big pic avail but oh well...

Agreed! Also,I don't like the look of a lot of newer high-end-the "futuristic" expensive look is already looking dated.
There are 2 types of audiophiles-people that really love music/equipment and rich people-the whole Stereophile/TAS crowd seems (mostly) to appeal to the later. A site like Tone is quite good for the rest of us.
I mean look at the Gaincard-others made a better chip amp for 1/5 to 1/10th the price!

"High End" audio deserves a bad reputation for lots of reasons, of which this is only one.

The fact of the matter is that even midfi amps, preamps, optical players and wires are essentially sonically transparent. So all there is left to do with them, other than adding euphonic distortions, is to put them into fancier, more robust packages, and then make unfounded claims about their sonic superiority.

The only difference between Harman and some boutique high end brand is that the later might actually believe that all the chunky film caps they stick in theirs has some sonic benefit.

Many wealthy people are also very capable of determining what comprises quality audio. In fact I would be willing to bet they would be better at determining that then the common worker on the street. It usually takes a few more dollars than a hundred dollar amp, a 30 dollar CD player and 20 dollar pair of speakers to qualify to make it to hi end audio, at least in my book it would. Sure we get to get a glimpse of good decent audio with our used hand me downs from the past, but really the truly upper crust of audio is something that only big money can accomplish.

Ken,
I appreciate that commentary.

Sorry folks, this topic is a very dead horse, and further beating is never going to revive the poor beast.
