Kind of thing that give the 'high-end' a bad name.

It's old news Peter. Significant and worth bringing up, but it's been discussed and argued over here for probably well over a year. You're right though, it's fodder for those who think hi-end audio is a ripoff.
My apologies I hadn't stumbled across this before and being new here and also being to lazy to read through all the threads here I thought I was onto something new and disgusting rather than something old and disgusting.

Funny, I thought it was the insufferable snobs that gave high end audio a bad name.
They often do but insufferable snobs are everywhere, not just as high-end audio customers.
Some years ago a friend who owned a picture framing and art gallery complained to me he couldn't sell a water-colour landscape even though he'd reduced it from $500 down to $100 and placed in in the window. I made a bet with him that if he put the price up to $6000 he'd sell it super fast but if he did I was to get half that. Two days after putting on the new price tag it sold. Coincidence? I think not, more like snobbery combined with ignorance.
Bought myself a California Audio Labs CD player with a tube output with my share. Does that make me a snob?

This is not specific to audio. There is a whole class of mentally challenged individuals in society that seem to get an ego boost out of paying as much as possible for any particular item. These people typically know nothing about the products they're buying, and just want to associate themselves with expensive brand names to fill a massive void in their sense of self worth.

So whether they're showing off their $2000 Bose system that sounds like crap or driving down the street in their Hummer or Range Rover or paying $350 for a shirt, your point applies. But as I said, it's not specific to Audio.

They're based on Oppo players as well.

Which is perfectly ok to me... And since they hover in the $500-$700 range, I think that's perfectly acceptable. I'll gladly pay a couple hundred more than than Oppo for a nice chassis... Plus the bonus of if it ever goes south, I can ravage parts from an Oppo.

Man, that's a bargain when compared to what Primare displayed at CES 2012. Yes, it's $5,500 and it's based on the Oppo 93.
I mean, one really has to ask....what the heck am I getting for that extra $5K?

A stunningly capable CD player that via its analogue outputs sounds far better than anything else I've ever heard. It's all down to the PSU, the in-built DACs and attention to detail, apparently. Add to that its SACD and streaming capabilities (I haven't tried DVD-A) and I'd say it was quite a bargain when put up against some players that "just" play CDs. The fact that it's "just based" on an OPPO 93 is neither here nor there.

You may have guessed I've just bought one ! I didn't have to pay anything like full price, fortunately, but even so it would have been :tresbon: !

B&O is not meant to be high end HiFi gear, they are works of art that can play music.
Granted, they don't sound very good, but the attention to detail and finish is extraordinary, no one else makes anything like it.
Crap, Now my B&O 4002 is junk.:tears:

I don't mind rebadging one bit, and quite honestly if the Lexicon had been in the sub $1000 range I would happily go get one right now as I think Oppos are ugly as all hell... But that kind of price increase is almost criminal.

I had the opportunity to speak with Rotel directly regarding a Blu Ray player to match the 15 series and they specifically said that there would be no such thing, for exactly the reasons someone else stated above. Kinda makes me wonder whats under the hood of the Cambridge Audio players... Had my eye on one of those for a while...

I am currently evaluating a Cambridge Audio 752BD. So far it is handily showing my Oppo BDP-95 the door.

You know, in all my years of enjoying this hobby I dont think I have ever met one of these "audiophile snobs". Sure sometimes high end audio sales guys can act snobish, really more assholeish, but as far as the general population of audiophiles everyone seems to be rather nice. I have spent time with guys at every level from mega wealthy $50,000 systems to collage student poor thrift store systems and find most guys are just excited to talk to someone else who are as into audio as they are.

I just dont see where this "audiophile snob" stereotype comes from, like Bigfoot, I'm sure they are out there but I've never encountered one in real life.

Bingo.

@ jeremyjustic - I've run into some audiophile snobs over the years (I call them pukes with more money than brains), at a few dealers in upstate NY. Yeah, they do exist out in the wild, and feel better about throwing stacks of cash at marques like Audio Note and Gryphon than equally good if not better sounding, but less expensive stuff.

Makes them feel superior, because it's about ego and self-centeredness.

There are no audiophile snobs. Just snobs who also happen to be audiophiles. The closest you can come to an audiophile snob is a salesman in a stereo shop.

Most of the snobs are the ones that are selling HiFi, either as a dealer or as a manufacturer. The snobbery is in a deception, nice to your face as they are looking for you to take out your credit card. But inside they are saying "what a dope, wish there were more". Today's greatest thing since sliced bread is tomorrow's component to the trash heap, or item on eBay.

IMO, high end audio is out of control more then ever, with prices higher then ever, supported by all the audio rags. How is it that now days a $1000 CD player is "affordable", anyone can own it.

The fact is that even millionaires could not afford a high end system. Who would spend 1/10 of their wealth on a HiFi system? Anyone on a $50K annual income is robbing from the family to support a habit. High end is the drug, money it costs is the destroyer all for those precious little ears.

Pardon me for venting, but eBay is my new audio salon. No snobs there and I can actually afford to get something a bit better in quality (tho it's probably older stuff) and I have no guilt buying it. When it breaks, it goes into the trash heap and I go shopping again.

Most audiophiles I know who buy expensive gear are regular guys who spend money on audio that other regular guys would spend on sharp cars, motorcycles, guns, bass boats and so on. You can buy some real nice audio gear for the price of a big, loaded Harley Davidson.
